What are our reasons for wanting handgun hunting?

This thread got me thinking. We need to have all our ducks in a row in case we are ever asked the question: Why do you want handgun hunting?

The obvious answer is to make hunting more challenging. At least it seems obvious to me. What else would we like to say?

I'd love to have a 22lr handgun for when bow hunting big game to take small game and dispatch a deer if need be instead of ruining another arrow to finish one off

When deer hunting I often come across grouse. My deer rifle is a little excessive to take them tasty chickens. Sure would be nice to have the option of a .22 pistol. Packing a deer rifle and a grouse rifle just isn't practical.

^^^^^The question would be, which one are you shooting deer with? It would be the same line of reasoning that says you cannot even have lead shotgun shells in your possession while hunting migratory game birds. I don't know of any big game regs that allow you to carry a rimfire while big game hunting.

-small game while big game hunting
-easier in thick brush
-lighter gun makes long walks easier, and makes longer walks possible.
-allows a backpack to be worn without pushing a rifle off your shoulder.
-makes climbing trees to a stand easier.
-more challenge

-and the biggest reason----because there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to hunt with handguns.

I'd carry a one of my .22s for ruffies and other birds while useing a rifle for big game. I suspect I'd at least pop a few deer for novelties sake, since I have them anyway.

Houndsmen would find a use for treed animals. Handgunners would welcome a chance to use their weapon of choice.

Some will hunt with the handgun for its higher difficulty level, and others will do it because they want to and just offer the difficulty thing as a reason.Nothing wrong with that.

There's bit of paradox to the difficulty thing anyway; there's 1000 ways to make hunting harder and less effective but guys are pretty selective about the "difficulty factor" they want. Hunting in piss poor areas, or barefoot, or in a Santa Claus suit in the desert would certainly be difficult but lack any popularity at all. On the otherhand, hunting deer in concentrated areas with a string gun over an oat pile might make the hunter feel like one of the elite while remaining about as hard as kicking yote#### down the road. Nothing wrong with that either.

I don't know of any big game regs that say I can't. So I can't carry a judo point when hunting big game with a bow for small game because their are broad head requirements in my province?

Seems stupid and dangerous to me to dispatch a mortally wounded animal with a large bore rifle from a matter of a couple feet. A ricochet would be deadly, and how many of us have stood around and watched someone do just that?

Far more sense to use a small, short range handgun, like a .32 or .38.

As to actual hunting with a handgun, Give me a bfr in 450marlin or even 3030 I can wear in a holster on my hip leaving both hands free for scrambling through bush/over rough terrain and you can count me in on handgun hunting!
One winter when son and I were particularly practiced up we were shooting respectable groups from my 357 from 75 yds off a sandbag. I see no reason with some practice shooting game from 40-50 yds couldn't be done with a suitable round.

1. Another option for controlled area deer hunts.
2. Allowing those with only one arm to hunt.
3. You can hike farther with a pistol on your belt that a rifle on your shoulder
4. A "sporting" reason to help legitimize Handguns in the eyes of the general public
5. Trappers and prospectors can be issued ATC's why not Hunters?

Amen on the bear defence. I think we should be able to carry a pistol on our hip in the woods any time of year for protection from anything. All other laws should remain the same though. Just my 2 cents.

MB has no such restriction

I would like to know if there was a practical reason why there is no handgun hunting? (forget the OFAH rants as well)

People using 25 and 32 acp way back in the worldw war days for hunting deer and more I recall hearing somewhere.

Rather inhumane to use thos calibers I do agree, but to rule out all handgun hunting sure sucks.

Size, weight, speed.

A farmer might be out on his fields, perhaps riding a tractor, perhaps mending fences, and spot a coyote eyeing his sheep. It used to be that he would wear a handgun when he started losing livestock. Carrying a rifle is too slow to get a shot off.

How much does the government spend reembursing farmers for lost livestock? Is it enough?
