What can you shoot with a 223?

Get real! Who would train the shooter of a very accurate round like the .223/5.56 not to aim for the head or chest cavity? Why? A wounded enemy is still capable of shooting back, blowing stuff up, warning others etc. If that's military tactics then why are there so many dead Al-Queda and Taliban out there with one .224" sized hole in their heads?!?

Hate to tell you guys , but he IS right ! When I was in the military back in the early 80's we were told to attempt to wound and not kill, the logic was that if you wound, it takes out at least 3 ..... one wounded, and 2 to carry the wounded out. now that being said, yes they were/are? being told it is preferable to wound , but in reality who is going to go to extremes to follow that q r and o ? when being fired upon you don't really have the time to aim , you pretty much shoot blind hoping to hit something , and yes this is why the word "regrettable" is in the statement about afghanistan , because they WERE and are being told to kill not wound , because those guys are so battle hardened from years of conflict they treat themselves and keep on shootin, so the rules change for the occasion , personally i think "shootem all let god sort em out in the end :)

The Abbot of Citeaux in response to the issue of how to distinguish between the Catholics and Cathars during the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) against Languedoc, is said to have replied "Kill them all, God will know his own".
;)

When I was in the military, we were taught to shoot for centre of mass. Whether that be the middle of the torso, or the middle of that boot sticking out from behind cover. You shoot to kill but wounding is better than nothing. (unlike ethical hunting)

I don't think too many foes of Canadian forces in the past few decades really give a rats about their wounded and would and in fact prefer them to pass on to that wonderful place, if not they're more likely to be treated and become a burden to our side.

A Western type society, would much rather have their Dad's, Son's, daughter's etc. come home wounded rather than in a bag.

That's insane, now I'm sure I would never have made it in the military... either that or I would have been considered the coldest, meanest bastard ever because I would always shoot to kill, personally. I don't believe in giving an enemy a second chance.

i'd use it on meat deer (does, spikers, basket bucks).

one thing about the guys up north, there is no bush for the animals to run into.

One thing that you should always ask yourself as an ethical hunter is "is this caliber suitable to deliver a quick kill". If you do ask yourself this question and if you do care about that, then the answer is NO. The .223 is NOT suitable to deliver a humane quick kill on a deer. But, that's just me. :)

You are correct. A little more than necessary is always a good thing.

howitzer! :D

Not quite, but I did have a 37mm anti tank gun at one time. years ago, my uncle used a winchester .25/20 for deer. A neighbor had his grandfather's 36 caliber over and under side hammer cap and ball deer rifle and could remember his grandfather bringing home the deer. I guess the deer were running around like field mice back then and it wasn't so much hunting as selected harvesting. I had a cousin who used a 30/06 which I think is a little too much gun. The ubiquitous 30/30 is probably just about right IMHO.
