What condition did YOUR Marstar M14 arrive in?

How clean should the trigger assembly be from cosmoline. It is hard to remove every drop and I'm assuming it's not a good idea to completely tear it down. Also in the manual is says it's not necessary to clean the inners of the bolt but there must be some cosmoline in there and i'm assuming that wouldn't be good. I'm also not going to take that apart. Any help appreciated.

I use Gunslick Crud Cutter in spray. Buy it at Wal Mart and don't forget to do the job outside your house.;)

GAWDDAM!!!! Mines here!!! WHOOOPEEE :D:D:D It looks great in the wood too. no dings, can't tell yet how hard it is though. I gotta friggen go out tonight and tomorrow too so I can't touch it yet.
The barrell DOES look to be over indexed a few degrees and the windage dial is a b!tch to turn. Has a nice ping when I cycled the bolt.
Heres a few pics.

Cleaned up my second one yesterday. It was in pretty good shape, but not quite as nice as the first one; front sight is hard over to the left and the barrel is visibly overindexed. Gas system wasn't as tight as the first; the lock was loose.

Other than that, the safety is a little less stiff and the action a little easier to rack than the first one, so my wife might get this one :). The rear sight was just as good once cleaned out. And the gas piston also seems to meet the op rod slightly off center, like the first one.

Otherwise, the two seem pretty much comparable in terms of QA issues. While the first one was better than I'd hoped, this one seems to be OK; I would actually have been disappointed if neither required any work :).

I wonder whether I can afford another one...

Mine came with a good looking stock, it is dirty but once cleaned up it won't be a bad sight at all; it seems soft though, when I removed the rear swivel a small piece of wood came with it  I guess I was a little to careless...

The rear sight works, but the windage knob is very hard to turn like most it seems. The apperture is drilled a little too low but its right on the horizontal axis.

Machine marks all over the receiver as expected.

Now the funny part: The front sight base on the flash hider assembly is machined incorrectly, the left side of the dovetail is at least 3mm higher than the other side, that makes the front sight somewhat offset, i'm sure the rifle will shoot a mile to the left like that. The guy that made that part must have been drunk or something, I laughed out loud when I first saw that ! That way I can't say if the barrel is rightly indexed or not, also the the oprod guide looks canted the the left, I'll figure out the indexation with the gas port once I remove the cursed FH assembly.

Put in a marstar SS oprod spring guide, wolff recoil spring, wolf hammer spring (3 hands job) but forgot to put the buffer in when I reassembled in a hurry. Result : A very hard to rack boomstick with a very good trigger pull :)

I need to check the headspace and to switch the bolt stop for the smith enterprise one i've got, but don't have the right punch

When my sister saw the rifle she actually said : This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. Guess everybody liked Full Metal Jacket

Mine arrived yesterday, cosmoline-y but looking good. Definitely the most bad-ass thing I have ever owned--an honour I thought would always belong to my 870.

Ooops...I was looking at it half assed backwards..looking from the receiver end the front sight is canted to the right...that means its NOT indexed enough correct?

M14/S condition

Just picked up my 2nd norinco from Accuracy Plus in Peterborough.

Here's the lowdown

M14 #1
  • Cosmo city
  • Op rod guide loose
  • Stock very dark "mystery wood" ( I was told by a buddy to soak the heel out of it with carb cleaner then wash it in soap & water, let it dry, then apply desirered finish. Will let you know how it turns out.)
  • Rear sight elev good, windage gritty. basicly junk.
  • action ok

M14 #2
  • Cosmo not bad
  • Same stock as above
  • All other mechanics good
  • Flash hider had a lot of "flash" left over from a poor QC. Had to remove it with a good scraping tool or risk blowing it apart on first shot.
Not sure about the indexing on both but they look ok by eye. They differ by 1000 on the serial #s and both had 2007 stamped on the reciever.

It's hard to understand all the people fretting over the small sht and they have yet to fire the thing! The first one I got from Dark(before I even knew any of the more esoteric stuff like headspace, indexing) shot like a top right out of the box! Just cleaned it and shot it. Well, I got to say it worked flawlessly and my shooting was vastly improved. The bullet goes the same place each time! The sights are fantastic and can be easily adjusted. The front sight is driftable and the difference can be made up in the rear. No more fear mongering. Shoot the beauty. The worst that could happen is you blow your hand off or maybe your face:cool:

I'm happy with the new one from Marstar. It has a nice solid gray parkerizing finish compared to Dark with a black finish. The machining is cleaner too. The cylinder lock was loose but now shimmed. Both rifles appear to have the gas cylinder hole off centre, who knows, but it works! PS the white mess is crayon to mark the sight adjustments not cleaned off. Cheers and happy shooting

Well......I guess that curbs any thoughts I might have about posting when I'm unsure about something, or just pointing out an observation in agreement about others similar issues.

If I keep reading these Norinco M-14 threads, I'm going to be afraid to shoot the bastard soon...pages and pages of potentially fatal issues that must be addressed through open-heart surgery on the rifle...and if not that, then the endless 7.62 vs .308 ammo/headspace arguments.

It's a Norinco. It's a proven clone and is cheap. People love it at the range and I enjoy the heft of the thing and the historic design. Hasn't blown up on me yet. Thank Christ we don't have this on the Nork 1911's (at least not most of the time).

I'm just echoing pontcannas sentiments. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings

Do you know when you ordered? I ordered before christmas and am still (im)patiently waiting.....

wohooo received mine today, washed everything dissassembled in the dishwasher, the stock came clean, after I could remove all metal to put on my new boyds stock. I had a hard time putting trigger assy back together but finally got it.
As for my flash hider the damn thing won't come off as easily than my first one, I will have to drill it.
Gas piston centered, barrel seems correctly indexed, op rod guide is solid but gas lock is loose, I will correct this with some shims.
Very happy again, thanks Marstar!BTW I ordered mid november too

I ordered on November 28th and just got mine today, disassembled and cleaned it. Very nice PING. good stock, mostly it's beyond my expectation. I just love it.
Thanks Marstar. :)
Here is the pic with one of my Norinco SKS's.

Mine arrived yesterday. I wasn't expecting it quite yet because my on-line VISA statement hadn't showed the charge clearing yet.

Anyway, a few first impressions:

First off, this is a beautiful rifle. It is NOT pretty but it is beautiful. Mind you the first centrefire rifle I ever handled and fired was an FNC1 and I still remember the day I was issued it from the armoury. Funny I can't remember the S/N.

Back to the M-14.
Not as much Cosmoline as I was expecting.
It took some effort and the help of a screw driver held crossways through the trigger guard to get the trigger group out. I just couldn't pull up hard enough with just my fingers.
Front sight looks straight up, at least by eye.
Guide rod spring just looks better with a new SS guide rod than with the original flat piece.
Very difficult to load the 5 round mags into the rifle. The rifle just looks so much better with the 20 rounder.
The stock is crude at best but overall sound. I'd love to find a USGI synthetic stock to replace it without paying $200.00.
Rear peep appears to be well centered in the disk.

I'm even considering taking up deer hunting just to get this one into the woods where it belongs.

I'm seriously considering ordering a second rifle once I get this one to the range and Marstar gets their backlog taken care of.

I'll add more info later after I clean it up properly. Now to pick up some ammo and plan a range shoot. Luckly where I work is only about a 10 minute drive to my club's outdoor range. If the weather ever breaks for a week, perhaps I can get it going during an extended lunch hour.

Cheers,
