What do people think of the 7mm WSM?

I started playing with the 162gr ELDx over RL26 in a 23.8" m70 7wsm. With a moderate charge (62.7grs) it did 2868 fps. I don't doubt 3100 fps would be safely attainable . This is at an OAL of 2.95", which had a jump of .033" (F-C brass, F215 primer)

The WSM cartridges will go by the wayside like most other fads while the ubiquitous on store shelves old standards 243 Win, 270 Win, 30-30 Win, 308 Win, 30-06 Sprng, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag will stand the test of time.
It seems like yesterday to me when the Remington rimless series of cartridges came out and then the souped up Weatherby cartridges ... mostly memories now.
The WSMs aren't that big a deal.

There are a few WBY cartridges that are fantastic....257 and 300 for example, some that don't much sense like the 270 and 7mm. The massive overbore cartridges serve their purpose as well if you are into that kind of thing...the 338-378 outperforms the 338 Lap for example.

I don't know about that. I like the .257 about as much as anyone; but there is nothing it can do that a .270 can't do as well or better. I've used both as culling cartridges.

When did that change? WW brass made in China?

Lots of reports of flash holes being too small or out of round, large primer pockets causing blow by and flame cutting to the bolt face. I had this happen to a 270 WSM of mine with new WW brass. I won't use it anymore.

And Winchester primers seem to be on the small side of spec, which doesn't help, so I quit using them too.

It can shoot 257 cal bullets. Let me see the 270 do that lol.

I don't say that following as a comment about my personal feelings on them, but a couple of those cartridges are on life support. .243 and 30-30 immediately come to mind.

How does the 7mm WBY make any less sense than the 7mm's that came after it but still don't exceed its performance?

Life support?
Not sure about the 243 Win but there are plenty of guns digesting 30-30 Win around (Win 94s, Mossberg 464s, Marlin 336s).
If a store sells ammo you can be sure 30-30 Win is on its shelves.
Likely not a favorite on this forun but the fudds own thutty-thutty spouting guns in the hundreds of thousands in Canada.

So then is this you prophesying of the 6.5 creed eventually going into obscurity and obsolescence? It is certainly enjoying “fad” popularity now.

It's certainly possible...pretty fickle crowd those PRS guys. They are already going back to 6mm's as the 6.5's have too much recoil lol.

7mmWBY is equaled by the 7mm Rem, so the cost factor...why pay double or triple for the same performance?

The WBY runs a little quicker and all things being equal the cost differences are negligible. The only thing the WBY gives up to the RM is availability of cheap ammo.

That is a ridiculous comment.
.243 and .30-30 on "life support!"
Geez Louise...

Can you find it on the shelf? Sure. Is there nearly as much 30-30 as there is .30-06, .270 or .308? Not even close. If memory serves, the local shops around here carry more 6.5 Creedmoor than they do 30-30. The reason for that is that 30-30 is vastly outsold by those other calibers. New shooters aren't buying lever guns and older shooters are representing an increasingly smaller slice of the shooting pie.
