A friend was given this rifle but the guy didn't tell him what it is or what calibre and he needs to know to register it? Help much appreciated.

p.s. tiriaq, how's Haliburton treating you?

Note that the stock is cut for a '44 bayonet.
Is that a splice in the forend, between the sling slot and the band spring?
Anything written on the breech of the barrel?

M38 im admiring a few on my wall right now, as said above the 91/59 is a cut down 91/30 you can tell by the marking on the barral and the rear sight on a 91/59 is a 91/30 rear sight with the long sight base and a few hundered meters milled off the sight. the one you have there looks to me as though it never saw a refurb or if it did there wasnt much done to it take note of the groove running down the upper right hand side of the forstock the stock is off an M44 carbine and that grooves where the folding bayonet folded against the stock. they stocked alot of M38s during the late war in M44 stocks so thats very normal, that rifles a war time one and like I said im pertty sure its not a refurb look at the sling cuts in the stock they dont have a plate around them and the front one has a piece of metel rolled over in the bottom of it to reenforce it thats how they did it during the war. a very desirable piece congrats to your friend.

Refurbed with an M-44 stock.
PP.

possibly, during the late war they did take in and refurb some rifles to dump them back out into service again, and where the building of M38s had been discontinued they had to drop them in M44 stocks thats what was on hand take note also of the stock finish its wartime and pre war finish ...what we'r used to seeing on the stocks of the imports we'r getting now is a post war varnish, hard to say what country this gun came through to to get here.

WOW I'll let my friend know what it is, what calibre and that it's quite possible wanted by quite a few here on the board. Thanks again for the info so he can register it. Like I originally posted it was given to him by a friend ... now I gotta find details as this has become interesting. HAHA. Thanks again for help my fellow CGNer's,

As a matter of interest I saw a photo in National Geographic one time of Aleut people from the Soviet side of Bering Strait hunting out of a boat with one of those rifles.
