My uncle had my grandfather's Pre-64 M94 .30-30... when he stopped hunting and my cousins showed no interest, he asked me if I wanted it... I was 13 at the time, so of course I wanted it... I rode my banana-seater over there and tied a cord around the barrel and grip, slung it over my shoulder and rode home, through the middle of town, no big deal in the mid-70's. So I voted .30-30, even though the first money I spent on a rifle was for a tang safety M77 in .308.

Marlin 336 from the mid 70s in basically perfect condition. I had shotgunned for a few years and had a 22 though.

That was a lot of rifles ago I can’t imagine how the uh... more seasoned members feel

First one I owned was a 30-30 M94.
First one I bought was a 700 Remington BDL in 270 Win.
Still have both of them.

I guess it was my Tikka laminate stainless .300win mag. Dad bought me an 870 for deer hunting and I needed a moose gun. Fired his M700 .300wm many times and didnt bother me so i bought one. Shot a few bears and moose with it but dont hunt either much anymore so it sits in my safe. Bought a M700 .223 shortly after that for coyote hunting that winter.

Beautiful 700 bdl 30-06. Got a 300 Win now and just as happy. I didn't reload for the 30-06 but I do for the 300.

Lots of guys reading Jack O'Connor I would imagine. Or young guys wanting a lighter recoiling rifle.

Seemed to be a popular round on the prairies too.

Up here it is available but the use of 130 grain bullets is considered a great sin or something because I never see them.

Winchester 100 in .308, great caliber but the firearm was a POS. Wouldn’t eject properly, the stock cracked (faulty wood), I ended up using it as a single shot until I saved enough to buy a wood stocked Tikka in .308. I sold that rifle to my brother in law and periodically try to convince him to sell it back to me, sold it to him in 1983, he still has it. Time to hound him again.

Did up a stag10 308 for the purpose. No it's not the lightest, no it's not a bolt... But I wanted a gun I would enjoy, and to me semi>bolt in terms of enjoyment.

Bought a short barreled 303 with a flash arrester with peep sights and a box of ammo from Jack Corlane for 25 bucks when I was in grade 8. Walked down the street with it and put it my locker at school. Took it home on the school bus. Not a peep from anyone.
Try that today.
Got off the bus and shot a black bear that was after the old mans pigs. Good timing. Hero for the day. :dancingbanana:
