I'd grab a Colt or BCM, put either an Aimpoint or a thousand-dollar-plus 1-4 or 1-6 on it, a quality light on the front, a Vickers sling and roll with that.
I have beaten on plenty of guns - in fact I think I've probably got more current knowledge on how to kill an SKS than almost anyone. I also do not spend my entire life - and particularly my entire gun-based life - in Canada. I'm fairly often in places where an AR doesn't need to be at a range.
There's nothing I'd take ahead of a quality AR provided the task was 5.56-appropriate.
