What's the best sniper rifle? Rem 700? Which model?

Wow, some people on here have some major issues on sounding more experienced then need be, the original post was someone innocently looking at purchasing a cool acurate rifle and thought this was the place to ask and he's met with judgement? I assume the people that came down on him/her were born knowing everything about precision shooting, I've been shooting 20+ yrs and still have much to learn, recently I've purchase a .223 rem 700 sps tactical it is my little "sniper rifle" and I love it, give people a chance and if they happen to use wording that you don't like maybe keep it to yourself and just try and help

As a relative newcomer to this site too, I'm sometimes astounded by the remarks thrown at other newbies. But like any internet site, one has to learn how to wade through the bad stuff and try to pick out that which will help.

This is a serious sniper Gear....

Afraid I wouldn't look too good in that...

I've been shooting from prone with Lee-Enfield SMLE's and No4's, SKS, and M1 Garand using slings and elbows for a bit over a year now. For me a .223 seems like a logical next step now that my iron sight and sling skills are getting better. Makes me want to try shooting further than the 400m I have been shooting at. My plan is to shoot out the barrel on the Savage Model 12 FCV I just bought, upgrade the optics that are on it to something better once I'm confident I am ready, re barrel to a long 1 in 7 when this tube is toast and when I'm confident I'm ready I'll move up to a 308 and repeat. Like any fine art its going to take time but I'm happy to say I'm excited to get started on wearing a capable unit out!

Sir..... you've said it in a nutshell... totally agree.

If the anti's cause me to become politically correct, than they have successfully controlled me and a part of my life. I will not succumb to them, they will not make me their b!tch. I have a precision rifle and I call it that because I choose to and believe it to be correct. my choice.

What about a No4 MkI(T)? I don't think it matters who's hands it is in, it was issued as a sniper's rifle and therefore always will be one. Same for M1C,D, scoped as issued 91/30s, scoped as issued SVT40s etc

If you go with a 22 get an accurate one, they can be very frustrating if they are not accurate.

His profile stated hes a newbie thats why i suggested a rimfire bolt gun

Excellent advice.

Another thing to practice with a 22 is some offhand (standing) shooting. This exaggerates small inconsistencies in form, such as breathing, grip, trigger pull, etc.

It makes you a much better bench shooter.

Top late. Our current laws are entirely based on the anti's agenda. Do you have a PAL? You have succumbed. Thank the antis.

And it's easy to say when you are out west, and there is a CPC majority. There will eventually be a majority of another party, and they WILL be coming for your guns. Unfortunately it is largely Ontario that determines whether we can keep our guns or not. ;)

I tried and failed to get into it cheaply.

Originally I thought I would buy a Rem 700 tactical for $700 bucks and just start from there as a platform to build on. I figured, I would throw on iron sights to start with and build on the platform later on.

Well throwing on iron sights is a PITA, so moved up my plan and bought a scope for it. $800. Oh, and rings. $50. And a rail. $100. Then it pissed me off that it did not have a box magazine, so I bought a box magazine for it. $350.

Oops, but I have more money than brains apparently (actually, I guess I have neither). Although there's a hinged bottom on my rifle, the box mag thing isn't a drop in. I either have to do some work on the stock, or replace the stock or use my box mag as a paperweight until I do.

Well.. I was planning to replace the stock anyway, at some point, right? So maybe just do that sooner than later. Guess that will be another $600-800.

So that's what.. $2600 to 2800?

$(@#(!@($($%(!@#$(

Anybody hook me up with some crack so I can start dealing it to pay for my gun habit?

Well you will be happy to know that this is only your first precision rifle and if you have a "gun habit" in a couple of years you will look back and comment on how damn cheap you were with your first rifle.

My first rifle was an SKS of all things which started a hobby that has lead me down a deep and dark rabbit hole that i wish wasn't assisted daily by the Internet!!

And now for some damn reason i feel the urge to acquire information about this unique abortion:

For the OP if he is still reading this i would encourage him to purchase a bolt action rimfire or .223 caliber rifle and enjoy shooting the cheap stuff for as long as possible :)

I think nobody has mentioned yet that the cost of ammo will for the most part will surpass all but the most expensive rifles by the time you wear out a barrel.

My 2 cents, and it may or may not be worth that.

I picked up a Gew.98 action Danish target rifle with a 6.5x55mm Shultz & Larsen barrel at the 2010 Dawson Creek gun show for $200. The stock is rather beat up on the outside, but that does not effect how it shoots at all.

It already had a Leupold 1 piece base and rings on it with an old(I'm 32) Redfield fixed 6. I have a Bushnell 3200 10x on it now and it just works very very well. Loves Sierra 140gr BTSP, H4895, Federal 210, Federal brass, and put together with the classic Lee Loader. Also is very fond of the Fusion 140gr load.

Works for me. Again 2 cents.

I would recommend a savage 93 bolt rifle in 17HMR and a bushnell tactical 10x fixed power and a bipod / sand bag this will cost you under 800$ and ammo will be fairly cheAp or you could go for a 10/22 with a heavy barrel ps. Many of us here can make hits from amazing distances and do it with "sniper" looking guns but most of us would not say that they are a sniper there is soo much more to that term than making shots on target at crazy ranges also the media uses it to scare people into thinking that these rifles are evil and know one should have them

+1 for the fast-twist Savage in .223.

I got one for under a grand, and put an old Leupold FX-III 12-power target scope on it, sitting on a used 20moa base I got off the EE. I had to file down one of the screws, but otherwise it mounted right up.

First day at the Homestead range near Calgary, it was hitting the 10" bull at 900m with hand-loaded 90-grain Bergers... Lots of fun. Even with several hundred rounds down the tube I don't think I have anywhere near $2000 into the project.

A buddy of mine who had been in the SA military picked it up and made consecutive hits at a (laser-) measured 1150 yards. Not bad for a ".22"

I'm so disappointed in how this particular forum treats a new guy. All you "holier than thou" egotists need to check your heads. The op may have used the wrong word which a simple correction would have fixed but turn him off of precision shooting and you just lost an alli in the fight to defend your sport. Think bigger than your self, it helps a lot.

I started with tacticool guns for my first few. It was when i put a bipod on my 10/22 nomad that I started thinking maybe actually developing a skill and hitting something would be more fun than just blasting away rounds at the dirt. My first choice for a more precise rifle was a savage 93r gv .17hmr with the accutrigger. I started with a cheap piece of glass at 100 yards. This may not count as real precision shooting to you experts but for me it was a great start. I put almost 1000 rounds through it in 4 weeks. I moved to some better glass and out to 200 yards and am still working on it. Then I started thinking about going bigger. The savage 10 PC in .223 came highly reccomended and I picked up a lightly used one on the MP for $600. I bought a one piece base and rings for $50 off the MP and a Minox Z5 6-20x50 for $550. All in, $1100. I shoot only decent factory loads and can shoot consistent 2 inch groups at 200 yards. When I find a shooting spot with more space I'll try to increase the distance. Ima beginner and this is where I have the ability to start. It's not a $2500 setup but it's perfect to teach me the basics. This is the kind of advice you experts should be giving to new guys. Help foster growth in your sport, don't beat down the less experienced.

Looking at trying precision shooting. Would appreciate advice on model. Don't want to spend too much cash in gun or ammo.

Can u recommend a good optic too please.

Tx
