That's a safety feature, in case you need time for a third or fourth shot you have that much more distance between a PO'ed critter and you.

Somewhere on this thread I said 50BMG was the hardest kicker I've shot, and I guess it still is the most powerful cartridge I've shot. But now that I own one, and have shot it a few hundred times, I don't find it very objectionable at all. The rifle is heavy, the brake is huge...the kick on your shoulder isn't bad at all. I've actually shot steel buttplate military rifles that seem to "hurt" more.
