What's the most useless caliber

Especially the 17HMR

I'll bite... :D

As far as I am concerned the 17HMR is the best out to 200 yards gopher cartridge around especially if you are shooting near houses.

I also started using it on grouse last fall I was making head/neck shots on them out to 75 yards out of 20 or so grouse I only barely clipped the top edge of one breast.

Oh yeah this is definitely not a round that can be included on this list...

Well at least someone mentioned the 30 carbine. I did think it strange that the Ruger No 1 would come out in a 303 though.. I guess someone will buy it.
Interesting thread.

Ruger did not just dream up the idea of a No.1 in .303 british - it was ASKED for by many, many people, amd ruger delivered it.
i cannot see how you can figure the cartridge is useless, it has been used and still is by a vast number of people the world over.....

Myself I am trying to figure out why anyone would want a Ruger #1 in 303 in the first place...

;)

When I first heard of the interest developing in the No. 1 chambered in 303Br. I gave it some thought but decided against it. I had a pair of Jungle Carbines that weren't getting enough use. I have since sold one so the one I still have should take care of my interests in shooting that caliber.

Me :) Though I don't even have one... You probably have one and are being fescetious!

Cals that throw a heavy for caliber bullet at 2300-2700fps are the ideal general hunting cartridges in my mind. Mountains can call for higher speeds, and wide open prairie perhaps, but for the most part a heavy .303 will serve most of us better than the latest whiz banger or Weatherby mag.

What we must be very cautious in a thread such as this, in that accidently giving the impression to others not of our mindset, that we as a responsible firearms community are open minded to further legislation regarding calibre restrictions.
I give Ontario's .270 example and PEI's recent legislation regarding .22 centrefire on some fur-bearing species.
Myself really I believe whatever floats your boat, fills your tags, our you choose to shoot targets with is fine with me, be it bullets or broadheads.

my two bits.......

all cartridges have a use, some are redundant and maybe that should be the title of this thread....cartridge development could of ended in the early 1900s since we had :

22LR - 1887
220 Swift - 1935
7x57 Mauser - 1893
30-06 Springfield - 1906
375 H&H - 1912

and a 12 ga shotgun

Anything you need to do hunting, you can do with one of the above

All you guys are slagging on the 17s!! On PEI, it's the only thing you can hunt and really kill both foxes and coyotes with (foxes .17 CF and RF & .22RF, coyotes all of the above plus .22CF.)

Want something really useless? how about the Eichelberger dart cartridges (10, 14, 14-221, etc....What the hell was this guy on? Sudden urge to go hunting butterflies??

oh man that is a load...

My favorite cartridge are mostly not readily available @ Canadian Tire I reload for them and have hundreds of rounds ready to go at all time example 6mm-284/308Bellm/300RUM/375RUM/45 Colt/45-70 etc etc etc........

:p

I will start by saying the Vancouver Canucks suck tonight.................oh crap wrong thread.

I have jumped in at the end of this thread but the most useless calibre has to be the 25/06. I could show a long list of why not to choose the 25/06 but even a little research shows the 25/06 is one of those nether fish or fowl calibres.

Come to think of it, one can choose four cartridges and one shotgun gauge to cover all North American hunting and all the rest are redundant. Guess what? The 25/06 is not one of those cartridges.

In my defense, I am pissed off the Vancouver Canucks are getting their asses kicked (again) by Chicago tonight and I had consumed a half bottle of wine so far tonight. BTW, the 25/06 is still a redundant cartridge. :nest:

useless caliber

Stonehorse- how could you poss say the 25-06 is a useless caliber- First it is a fine cartridge - but then it is a 25 caliber which has also many other fine cartridges such as the 257 BOB - 257 WEA - 25-284 WIN etc- Smarten up while you can - it may not be the best or your fav- but it is Excellent - and i bet i get more backup then you do ! Jim :D
