Whats the story on the 9.3X62 in Canada?

Nice rifle. I would just buy a slip on pad. That is going to hurt with the stock recoil hockey pad. Trigger adjustment should make it sweet. May need to free float the barrel. Have fun and let us know how it shoots.

pbonura - Time will tell what my shoulder can handle. I do have previously torn rotator cuffs from climbing but they are getting pretty strong again seven years after the injuries. The barrel is free floated, I checked with a piece of paper between the barrel and stock last night. No hang ups. I will definitely be posting a range report.

The recoil really isn't all that bad.
One of my 9.3x62's is a little Stiga 96 that weighs just a little over 7 lbs slung and loaded.
It has a 3/4" recoil pad on it now (only beacause I shortened the length of pull) but for a few years I shot it with the plastic shotgun style buttplate.
Shooting 286 Partitions at close to 2400 fps provides a bit of a kick but it's very managable.

There could very well be a compromise.
Mount a x50 objective lense scope on her
to justify the heighth.
It may be enough fer you girraffie neck folk.

I use many one piece bases (of different make and models) and while I understand it can happen, I personally never experienced a screw loosening, not even on my 358 Norma Magnums.
Anyhow, I also use the Weaver type, and I do prefer the Grand Slam when it comes to it, as they're all steel. The more common set up is #46 front and #45 rear.

You won't regret it, you may even end with more than one :)

The recoil pad is just too damn hard on that gun. I would not even attempt to shoot my zastava 300 win without a slip on. I have to free float my gun as it touches. Really interested in your range report. I really do not like recoil and after feeling that recoil pad I would not want to shoot it without one. But each to their own. Maybe 10 rounds of my rifled barrel slug gun and I am done.

I haven't even decided nor bought the scope that I will mount on it.
Keep the comments and suggestions coming.
A LH '98 in x62 !! ... walnut and blued steel too ... ain't that something.

I've had 3 scopes mounted on the beautious Husqvarna 640, all of 'em fitted with QRW QD low rings.
El Paso Weaver 1.5X post reticle. Lyman Perma Center 4X post reticle. B&L 1.5 - 6 duplex.
Settled on the B&L, as that one does it all for these older eyes, (no longer are the irons usable past 75 yards).

Have had my first B&L 1.5-6 mounted on a heavy loaded .375h&h, for 20+ years now. Pounded the livin' daylights out of that scope, I surely have. Nary a hiccup, it holds zero, has good clear optics, solid turrets ... tough as nails.
The second one for the x62?, it cost me $200 delivered, off the EE. :)
25 to 300 yards, I'm covered. Crappy weather in tight bush? ... Off it comes, use the irons. (BTW, those QRW's do re and re and hold a zero.)

'looky, ... yer damn good at touching me funny bone, so you are.

Ted - Yes, I will shoot it with the stock butt pad on there and see how I do with it. The problem is going to be finding time to get to the range, work and school have me pretty tied up.

Looky - Yes the sander may have to come out on the stock as we have discussed. It is incredibly difficult to get the sights to line up as I can't get my eye down low enough.

Kayaker - Thanks for that, I did read that in the booklet that came with it but didn't understand why.

Baribal - I think I will be going with the Weaver's. What rings are you using? This is all a ways off as I haven't even decided nor bought the scope that I will mount on it.

Interesting note on the one piece bases, Ted. Learn something new everyday, it makes sense when you think about the physics involved. Plus, I think the one piece base will ruin the classic look of these rifles.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming, this thread is already a great resource for someone like myself getting started on the x62.

hello,

if you can find them im using Weaver Lever Lock grand slam so you have a quick detach rings and can use of course the open sights.

about open sights maybe it s the LOP those rifle have very long LOP (not a problem for me) sights are coming straight ...

on the recoil pad yes try before doing anything else.

i dont know what you ve done with your trigger but yours is adjustable like the Interarms X so you dont have to touch it that much ... mines were both good and thinking about a third one.

your wood is nice for sure good choice.

you ll have fun.

Well, on all those I have / had, I used the 46 front and 45 rear. The difference will be the height of the bases. 20A is pretty thin and will mount a tad lower.

Baribal,

this is the bases that i have always use for the Interarms x and Zastava when it was not EAW and the Remington 798 came with that combo 20A and 55.

ill try one day the 45 and 46 to see the differences if any.

all the best.

I use full power loads to fireform: 4320, 4895, 4064, Re 15, Varget, 3031, they have all worked. Any load that a loading manual indicates will get a 286 gr bullet to 2300-2400 will give you perfectly formed cases. The difference in point of impact between fire-formimg loads and the same load in formed brass, is so small it can only be demonstrated from the bench. That is why I have had no hesitation hunting with fire-forming loads.

As well, the accuracy remains the same. The reason I adjusted the scope in the posted target was because I was shooting the 286 gr PRVI for the first time, and they hit slightly lower than the 270 Matrix. Come to think of it, that would have been a pretty neat four shot group if I had not adjusted the scope. :)

Ted

My understanding of Internal ballistics (what little I know) is that the brass does little to contain the pressure, but acts more like a seal

so, if the fireforming load is the same as the hunting load, the pressure should be the same, as all else should also be.

The wood is quite good. I was tempted as I shoot from the left side but am happy with mine (Syn black RH) as most of my bolts have been that way!

Bob

I have always wondered at the WRONG description of shooting rifles and bows...

I'm a Left hander by normal conversation, BUT I shoot from the RIGHT side of the gun!

same with a bow... I'm called a lefty, yet shoot from the right hand side.

I think someone was drunk when they decided what a RH VS LH rifle was.

I think any Scope ruins the "Classic" look of a rifle.

I am partial to a receiver sight, but that too isn't AS Classic.

but for a 300yd gun, it is really all that is needed.

I just wish my x2 was D&T'd for a receiver sight. I am not ready to bring myself to put holes in it myself

I guess I'll have to wait untill April for mine. I ordered yesterday online and it told me to call with my credit card info. So I called left a message with my name, order number, and phone number. Called again today and left a message with the same info, haven't got a response yet. I'm sure they are very busy getting ready for the big move. Hopefully they give me
A call before the 18th the suspense will kill me haha.

Do not expect it to happen, unless one puts a hand on some floating in Europe. Zastava are not the kind of company to sell small quantities most Canadian retailers buy.

Well, after a bit of searching I found a box of Hornady 286gr so if the weather works out tomorrow and the storm we are suppose to get on Sunday doesn't come in early, I'm going to hit the range with the new 9.3 tomorrow. I've disassembled the rifle and gave it a thorough cleaning to get rid of all the factory grease. I have not touched the trigger or anything else yet. I will report back tomorrow with a range report and photos if I can get out.
