What's with the Current Trend of Large-Capacity Magazines in Hunting Rifles

Who am I to give a rats derrière what someone wants to run for a rifle, or rifle accessories!
It’s not like I have to lug it around……….

This is a bit of a stay in your own lane kinda post.

I recon there are hunting situations where one needs a 10 shot mag. I mostly am ok with 5 which however starts getting tight if you knock a group of deer. I like the 8-9 shot MDT plastic mag loaded with seven rounds. AICS short action is well sorted with options. The MDT 3 shot is so flush you can hardly get it out, Hawkins has a lovely metal 4 shot almost flush etc. Just the long action AI type mags are still lacking options maybe because there are 3 different lengths available.
Magazines are so much handier than drop plate set-ups, I would change every rifle I have as unloading a mag is easier than digging cartridges out of a mud puddle. We'd often just do very short hunts, then back to the car to a different location checking farms, constantly load unload. Anyway central cartridge presentation feeds much more reliable than left- right pick up in my experience. I have the same mags in my Sako, Rem 700, Tikka, Mauser, Bergara, Howa rifles.

... I'd like a set-up where I could have a top-feedable flush mounted magazine that even looks like a floor-plate, with the availability of larger capacity magazines...

Benelli advertises the Lupo as being intentionally designed for the detachable magazine to be easily top loaded. Have read about 10 round mags coming, but so far I don't think they are. Stock mags are flush, 10 rounders obviously won't be.

Who cares about size when capacity is regulated?

Preference is the only measurable thing here.

As stated a lot of people prefer to grab the mag and pull out versus having a switch to release it from inside the firearm.

That 10 round mag feels small when the wolf pack is all around you. Lots of times we see wolfs while hunting and you don't always hit with the first shot, and when they start running a large mag can get empty real quick.

I'm hoping that when ruger releases long action American gen 2 rifles we will get a 3-4 shot long action AI mag as a part of the deal

I learned to hunt deer with a .303 SMLE and 10 shot magazine. back then we mostly hunted by pushing bush and shot everything on the run. With my low skill level and high level of enthusiasm I almost emptied that big magazine a couple times. Over many years, my tastes and skills have evolved, and now I find my hunting needs generally satisfied with one to three shots. But, hunting driven game in Germany left me wishing for more capacity a couple times in recent years. Watching a wild boar run off while holding an empty rifle is memorable. So it's nice to have choices.
The market is a funny thing, what is fashionable is not always what is practical. "Tacticool looks" and big firepower are fashionable right now. I think most ten shot magazines and the rifles they fit into are ugly, and awkward, so I don't buy them. Classic good looks and lively handling matter to me. But somebody else thinks differently, or has a different need, Yay! We all vote with our money.

I'm thinking of the newer-manufacture big-game hunting rifles. Some of them now come with large-capacity detachable magazines capable of holding 10 rounds. Who needs 10 rounds in the magazine when hunting? I can't think of a single time when I've been hunting over the past 50+ years that I've ever felt the need for more than the 3 or 4 rounds in my magazines. I greatly prefer fixed magazines with hinged floorplates over detachable magazines (both aesthetically and for security), but I can live with a 3-5 round detachable mag if it sits flush with the bottom of the stock. The larger magazines that drop way down below the stock line look terrible, in my opinion, but more importantly add unnecessary weight (close to 4-5 oz.or more when fully loaded) as well as making the rifle more difficult to carry in the field. When I'm carrying a rifle in the field (not slung) I usually carry it with my hand under about the location of the magazine. That seems to be about the best point for balance. A magazine hanging down in that location gets in the way. Is this trend just a nod to tacticool?

I’m totally with you, I just don’t get it( I mean I do get it but not my thing at all) I like slimline rifle and stock, I like wood and blue, I’m a fudd I guess hahaha! Five rounds is more than I need and if I need more than that I dig in my pocket and I load more! Damn lots of the game I’ve taken over the years have been with Ruger no1 so….
But again if that’s what people want like then good for them!! In reality I’m part of the minority when it comes to what I like in guns!

Don't need diamond rings and jewellery, don't need cars that go faster than the speed limit, don't need wine and beer, don't need a lot of things doesn't mean the choice to buy , own, consume should be eliminated.

What the fu.k is wrong with people always trying to make others choices for them.

Honestly sickening and sad that they see nothing wrong with it

Bolt action rifle capacity isn't regulated though?...

This. How many 30-30 carbines were happily stuffed to the gills so deep woods wanderers could feel safe when alone?

Oh yeah. C-21 didn't like its capacity of six in your handy carbine that served your family at least two generations.
Yet never once, on purpose, ever pointed at another human being.

Some of you guys have taken my original comments and run with them all over the place--and need to chill out.
Nowhere did I suggest that shooters shouldn’t have choices or be allowed to have large-capacity magazines. Nowhere was I “trying to make others choices for them.” I’ve never needed or wanted a large-capacity magazine when big-game hunting, and was just curious about why others felt they did. End of story….

You’re not new around here, there’s been plenty of fuddery about this. It’s no secret why people prefer a box mag for hunting, your just stirring the pot with comments like these.

“Who needs 10 rounds in the magazine when hunting? I can't think of a single time when I've been hunting over the past 50+ years that I've ever felt the need for more than the 3 or 4 rounds in my magazines.” “Is this trend just a nod to tacticool?”

I think that 10+ rounders is an excellent idea. Load them up to capacity, and then they help balance out those insanely long heavy barrels and muzzle breaks that so many seem to like so much. :)

Of course nobody needs them; the question is...why do so many want them? And the answer is...as it usually is with most trends like this...marketing!

Personally, I try to convert most of my repeating rifles to the AICS-pattern mags, for ease of interchangeability. I've even done it on a Ruger Ranch 5.56, as an upgrade from the AR mags. The beauty is that I can use the 10-rounders when I want to...targets and plinking in the cold comes to mind as an excellent example. Just load up a bunch of big mags and enjoy a shooting session without screwing around inserting individual cartridges into small mags with frozen fingers. When hunting, I really don't want the weight and inconvenience of the big mag, so a 5-rounder is much more useful IMHO, and I can't wait to get a couple of the new MDT 3-rounders to try for hunting.

That's assuming that I am not using my true favourites: my fully semiautomatic single shots! :)

I really don't have much of an opinion , but if I am hunting with a bolt action ( which rarely happens) I prefer a hinged floor plate. If a person wants to hunt with a ten round mag that is up to them:cool:

MDT make a 3 round AICS mag, your problems have been solved already.

And they're great!
