What's your go-to grouse hunting setup?

The vast majority of the grouse I've shot have been with a .22. Usually my Ruger 10/22 but a few others over the years. Head shots are the way to go. This past fall I did carry my .410 one day and got 2 spruce and one ruffed with it. I did pretty good keeping the pellets in the head/neck area but got 2 in the ruffed grouse breast meat. Wasn't happy about that.

Of all the guns that could work, I have a 20 gauge 20” coach gun with imp and mod chokes. My most successful grouse gun ever and last year was year 30. I really prefer high brass #4, but number 5 or 6 does work. #4 is much better for the odd snowshoe hare though. Lost a few with #6 over the years.

At 50 yards with a 22lr a body hit doesn't ruin any meat when using CCI standard. I try for a head shot. If I miss I generally walk closer but if they're headed towards thicker greens and I'm hungry I'll take the body shot. Never have I lost a breast from a 22lr at ranges that surpass that of a scatter gun

I tend to shoot grouse flying hence the scattergun (28g) and the pointer but have shot a few with my browning 22.Never tried 50yds. with it something I will this year .(the pointer catches the odd one so the breast is very much intact)

Hmm I never shot a grouse with anything but a shotgun until 5 years ago but hey if it works cannot argue that..

I'm still trying to catch one by hand; been close but still haven't pulled it off.

Most of the time I use my Beretta 686 silver pigeon 111 but thats sort of a default because it's sort of my everything else shotgun too. Other than that, whatever 22 I'm enjoying at the time. Got a soft spot for a Remington rolling block that was originally a .32 Rimfire but is relined to 22 LR. carries like a stick and points like a stick. I haven't met anyone that couldn't point a stick. :)
