What's your go-to grouse hunting setup?

A couple of years ago I had this notion I needed a newer & shorter barrel, for my M37 Ithaca in 28 gauge.
I held off buying an extra barrel. And I came to appreciate very much this 28 inch pipe.
I have zero desire to replace it anymore.

In case you get the itch again Ithaca did make 24”bbl for the 28g. website says sold out but often they do have a few still kicking around, I scored an AA English stock set that was sold out but called and the guy found a few sets buried in back. I’ve got the 26”bbl on mine and it’s like a wand now with the English stock.

Historically I have just shot them on the ground with a .22lr. This year I'm going to try out the TPS M6 and see how I can do with the 410 barrel on it. May still head shoot a few with downloaded 38 special rounds from the 357 barrel if the opportunity presents itself and I can work up a .38 load that shoots accurately from it.

I'd like to find a reasonably priced Savage 24 in .22/410 one day, that would be a fun small game gun I think.

Some nice pics of guns, dogs and birds posted!

Are you guys that are using shotguns shooting sitting birds or only shooting once they fly?

For the last few years, we've been extremely fortunate with grouse numbers. If they tree before I manage to scare them twice, it's usually not too long before there's another opportunity. My dog isn't a big fan of this mindset until he realizes it means he gets to hunt longer and he forgives me. I don't believe I've shot a grouse on the ground or out of a tree with a shotgun since the end of 2010.

I recently bought this as a birthday present to myself and while I obviously haven't had the opportunity to hunt it yet, it should be a winner.

I wish the previous owner hadn't added a pad, but it still balances pretty close to the hinge pin. Choked pretty open (roughly Skeet 1 and Skeet 2), it should be a grouse gun in competent hands. In mine...it'll at least look nice. I figure 7.5 Gun Clubs will work out of this nearly as well as any other shotgun I've used them in ;)

With a little over a month to go before the opening of grouse season... I thought this thread needed a bump!

Work having gotten in the way of opening season this year I am chomping at the bits to head out Tuesday morning for a day trip.
With a limit of 5 in Region 3 (it isnt about the limit) I will not be taking the time for shots like this with a camera, but the 1100 28 will be speaking loud and clear and I hope with good authority.
Good Hunting All !

Mines a Huglu 12Guage, my Dad and I went out opening day. Covered about 10kms and seen three birds, got one. My Dad has hunted grouse all over Canada and couldn't believe how skittish they are here. I told him that makes it more fun.
