Where are the Long Range Ranges in Canada?

Wasn't it 600?

It was 1000 until the DND started making improvments. They reduced to to 600 about 10 years ago. Now I guess the DND only requires soldiers to shoot 300m but they will allow shooting from the 400m mound. The obstacle down the middle of the range kind of takes any question out of future long range shooting at Cedar Springs.

Setting 600 yards as a minimum to be called 'long range', where are the 'long ranges' in Canada? Emphasis on private ranges (I'm thinking ahead of where to retire to and would like to have a range near-by), but public access (albeit limited) on military ranges is acceptable. I'd like to throw this out and see what the responses look like. What comes to mind are:

BC - Military - Chilliwack (Vokes) - 600m
BC - Private - Kamloops - 1000m??
AB - Private - Calgary (Homestead) - 900m
AB - Private - Edmonton (Genosee ?) - 800m+??
AB - Private - Ft. McMurray - 800m+??
SK - Private - Nokomis - 1200+ yards
MB - Military - Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg) - 1000yd
ON - Military - Barrie (Bordon) - 1000yd
ON - Private - Hamilton (Winona) - 800yd
ON - Private - Chatham (Cedar Springs) - 800yd??
ON - Military - Ottawa (Connaught) - 1000yds??
NB - Military - Fredericton (Gagetown) - 900m
NS - Private - Halifax (Bull Meadows) - 800m
NS - Military - Halifax (Bedford) - 600yd?

Please feel free to add to the list and correct any errors that I have here.
Our range is 1,000 meters at the far end, with steel also at 900 and 800 meters, and targets +steel on certified silhouette range and target frames from 25 yards to 265 yards

I think it is great you started this list Scout.

I also like the other's chiming in about the facilities themselves at their home range. Keep it coming guys and let's see some pics of your facilities.

Here is mine..

500 yd line, pairs shooting (The guy 2nd from the right is 88 yrs old, E. Brown. I'm the one in white on his left)

Nokomis North Star range is rated as the TOUGHEST full bore range in the Northern hemisphere due to the winds we get in the prairies and the water you maybe shooting over giving mirage that you should really omit! Berms at 1200, 1100, 1000 (+plus a concrete bench), 900, 800, 600 (+plus a concrete bench), 500 yd and at 300M is also a berm (+plus a concrete bench). There is also a 200yd with a portable wood bench, 400 yd and 700 yd firing points but we never use 'em. You can lay on the ground at 1500 yds and still see the targets, but any further out and you can't without a platform and there is no club platform there, so bring your own. There are 6 cantilever frames that use DCRA targets that are manned by a paid target crew that stay in their little concrete bunker will the competition runs, pulling targets, indicating the shot with a marker and assigning a score value and representing the target for the next shot.

The clubhouse has a fireplace for heat, couches and big rockers, chairs, tables, indoor plumbing, hot water, shower, full kitchen and utensils and a few army cots for competitors that travel and members that wish to sleep in the clubhouse and RV hook-ups, with some 30A for the bigger units that come, and rest are 15A. Plus the Town of Nokomis is only a few miles away were there is a rest/bar, gas and a hotel plus a few other businesses There is also a camp ground at Nokomis and that is here the sewer dump is as well for those camper/RVs that use our electrical hookups and need a dump before they leave :)

AB - Private - Edmonton (Genosee ?) - 800m+?? - target frames / gongs?
AB - Private - Ft. McMurray - 800m+??
SK - Private - Nokomis - 1200+ yards - butts with 6 frames, paid/comp markers/shower/kitchen/power
MB - Military - Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg) - 1000yd - butts with 25-30 frames, paid/comp markers
ON - Military - Barrie (Bordon) - 1000yd
ON - Private - Hamilton (Winona) - 800yd

Dundurn

That range in Dundurn your talkin about, can the public shoot there?

Camp Dundurn is not generally speaking, open to the public. Like all military ranges, it must be booked through Range Control. You'll need a qualified Range Safety Officer, safety vehicle, 100% radio comms, a first aid kit, sentries, etc. The SPRA use Dundurn. Contact them through www.saskrifle.ca.

Connaught is 900 m. and was at one time the only DND metric range in Ontario. Some mental midget has now had dirt moved around at Cedar Springs to change it to metric and Winona is next.
I think Canada went to the metric system in the 70's so 40+ years later they decide to move some dirt:rolleyes: I was told by a MWO from the engineers that soldiers are not trained to engage targets out past 300m.

This isn't in Canada, but I'm going to put it out there because:
1) I'm a member
2) Its only 3 hours from Windsor and 3.5 hours from Sarnia.
3) I'm thinking of moving back to Ontario and I'll probably keep going.

Its 1000 yards any time you want... not just a few days out of the year. You don't have to take a class to use it. You can shoot at your own pace. You'd have to drive that far inside of Canada from a lot of locations anyway.

$300 for the first year, $200 each year after (NRA membership is like $25/year). Best range facility I have ever seen. They provide spotting scopes, shooting mats, a CED chronograph, an ATV for changing/painting targets, cleaning supplies, hearing protection and you can even buy food there.

Get your Form6NIA and come on down. Its very nice. Steel at every 100 yards, so no need to "man the butts".

Would it not be easier and cheaper to just move the target stands? Leave the berm.

Maybe hold some events there for a little revenue generation.

I know its not up to you Maynard, but just putting the thought out there.

Max,
If you have every been in the butts on a DND range you would see it isn't that easy to move the target stands to meters. And that would only be ok at one distance as the other firing points are still imperial distances from each other.
We already generate enough revenue for the range, it is called taxes.
The plan and simple solution is for the ORA to get off it's ass and build it's own range.

I thought that Connaught was only 900 yds !?

There are 3 main ranges at Connaught.
- C Range with 76 lanes is out to 900 metres.
- D Range with 30 lanes is out to 300 metres.
- A Range with 40 lanes is out to 600 yards (yes yards).
- B Range is fallow, but shooting may be authorized on it for special circumstances.

Correct CyaN1de - my use of the word 'private' implies a membership required in order to shoot. I've updated the list based on people's comments:

BC - Military - Chilliwack (Vokes) - 600m
BC – Military – Nanaimo (Nanaimo) – 600yd
BC – Private - Campbell River (Campbell River) – 600m
BC – Private – Burns Lake (Tweedsmuir Park R&GC) – 1048yds
AB - Private - Calgary (Homestead) - 900m
AB - Private - Edmonton (Genesee) - 700m
AB - Private - Ft. McMurray – 1000m
SK - Private - Nokomis - 1200+ yards
SK – Military – Saskatoon (Dundurn) – 1000yds
SK – Military – Moose Jaw (Burdick – 600yds
MB - Military - Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg) - 1000yd
ON - Military - Barrie (Borden) - 1000yd
ON - Military - Hamilton (Winona) - 800yd – soon to be 400 yds?
ON – Military – Kingston (Kingston) – 600yd?
ON - Military - Ottawa (Connaught) – 900m
NB - Military - Fredericton (Gagetown) - 900m
NS - Private - Halifax (Bull Meadows) - 800m
NS - Military - Halifax (Bedford) - 600yd
NL – Military - ? (Cambrai) – 600m

Overall I’m surprised to see how few the 600yd+ ranges are and also how dependent we are on the military to provide to provide these facilities. There were also a couple of pleasant surprises on Vancouver Island. I hope that we’ll see more ‘private’ long ranges to help our sports survive. Thanks for your help. As Kodiak indicated, it would be interesting to see the other ranges - please post any pics you might have.

Is there any way to get permission to shoot @ Vokes in Chilliwack? I know they hold matches out there occasionally, but I've never fired past 300, so I don't feel ready to participate in a match.

If you can shoot 300, you can shoot 600. Just take a good chronograph of your handloads, and print up your ballistics. Whamo. Your ready. 600 is not hard.

While I have a few pics of other ranges I have traveled to...

MB - Military - Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg) - 1000yd (from the entrance, the 1000 is up against the fence further west of this gate)

I can also say that most if not all "Military" ranges you go to, you will be hauling your stuff, humping it from berm to berm. Most "Privates" all allow you to drive from berm to berm or you are at one shooting position and there are multiple range targets with dirt berms as backstops behind them, like Genesee for example.
