Where are the Long Range Ranges in Canada?

Milcun has a range complex near Lindsay, Ontario.. I have only been there once.

They have a 600 yard range with a nice grass 5 position firing point at each distance, 200 to 600.

I saw a nice 100 yard small bore range with a covered firing point. Looked like it would hold about 15 shooters.

They have a pistol range. i heard it being used but did not see it. They have a cabin, set up as a classroom and lunch room.

They are building a 1000 yard range. The firing point is in, the range is cleared through the woods, but there is no target installation yet.

About 2.5 hour drive from Toronto.

Here is a picture of the 500 yard firing point and the target area.

Just to add...CFB Wainwright. A few 600m (conventional) and the club uses an infinite field firing range so 1000m and beyond for that one.
Military and civilian use...anyone can join the CFB Wainwright gun/archery club.

Correct CyaN1de - my use of the word 'private' implies a membership required in order to shoot. I've updated the list based on people's comments:

BC - Military - Chilliwack (Vokes) - 600m
BC – Military – Nanaimo (Nanaimo) – 600yd
BC – Private - Campbell River (Campbell River) – 600m
BC – Private – Burns Lake (Tweedsmuir Park R&GC) – 1048yds
AB - Private - Calgary (Homestead) - 900m
AB - Private - Edmonton (Genesee) - 700m
AB - Private - Ft. McMurray – 1000m
SK - Private - Nokomis - 1200+ yards
SK – Military – Saskatoon (Dundurn) – 1000yds
SK – Military – Moose Jaw (Burdick – 600yds
MB - Military - Winnipeg (CFB Winnipeg) - 1000yd
ON - Military - Barrie (Borden) - 1000yd
ON - Military - Hamilton (Winona) - 800yd – soon to be 400 yds?
ON – Military – Kingston (Kingston) – 600yd?
ON - Military - Ottawa (Connaught) – 900m
NB - Military - Fredericton (Gagetown) - 900m
NS - Private - Halifax (Bull Meadows) - 800m
NS - Military - Halifax (Bedford) - 600yd
NL – Military - ? (Cambrai) – 600m

Overall I’m surprised to see how few the 600yd+ ranges are and also how dependent we are on the military to provide to provide these facilities. There were also a couple of pleasant surprises on Vancouver Island. I hope that we’ll see more ‘private’ long ranges to help our sports survive. Thanks for your help. As Kodiak indicated, it would be interesting to see the other ranges - please post any pics you might have.

The range in Moose Jaw called Burdick is closed and will not be re-opened. And the range in Dundurn is open to the public. We have two ranges here one is a 100m smallarms and a 900m classification. They are open to any member of the Det Dundurn rod and gun club. The membership is under $75 for non-military. If you want any more info PM me, I am a range safety officer for the club and I work at range control so I should be able to answer any questions. The small arms is also licenced for restricted so you can use it to get your ATTs.

Bedford Rifle Range is indeed a 600 yards range, however the 600 yard firing point is currently not usable.

The Bull Meadow Range Complex is owned by the Nova Scotia Rifle Assoc and has an 800 meter range, 100 meter sight in range, pistol range and shotgun/skeet range.

It's located on the Beaverbank Road (HW 354) just before upper Rawdon. If you leave highway 101 and take Beaverbank Road (HW 354) it is 26KM up the road.

Excellent complex!

Campbell River has a 600 yard range as well as a seperate 200m range and IPSC/Handgun and Trap. The front 100m is set up for .22 silhouette and there are target frames at 100yd&m 200yd, 300yd, 400yd, 500yd & 600yds. We have a Fun Benchrest Shoot from 100yds to 500yds, once a month, except the summer holidays. Here's a pic looking downrange

That is both bad and good news.

Pity the little 600 yd range has closed. There was a lot of Militia infrastructure money spent there in the '90s. Boxed-in pea gravel firing points, flagpoles, sheds, repairs to the butts, fences, etc. Any explanations why it isn't being reopened?

But, good to see Dundurn has reopened to the public. There was a particular SWO who ran the camp like he owned it. The SPRA couldn't convince him or the Det Cmdr to let us anywhere near the place. I suspect the Roads and Grounds guys saw through him and kept the grass mowed because they knew he'd be posted eventually. I kind of like Dundurn, because it is a very old facilty. I saw the drawings once and they were signed by Chris Vokes, who led a notable WWII career and for whom the Chilliwack range is named.

The MilCun ranges are metric.
The 100m range is also approved for handguns. Firing points are at 100m, 75m, 50m, and 30m. on in to 5m.
The second has mounds at 200m back to 600m. The space from the target line to the backstop is an approved 30m pistol range.
The long range, back to 1100m. is under construction.
This is one of the very few privately owned shooting facilities in Canada. (www.MilCun.com). The complex encompasses the better part of 1000 acres.
OSA (www.osacanada.ca) is based at MilCun.

The range at Burdick was closed because the saftey trace extended beyond the borders of the land the military owned. So we were unable to get it licenced as it would have been unsafe. I am not sure what a SWO is, but the people we have working at Range Control are almost all shooters and try to get people out as much as possible.

The trace at Burdick was always problematic - for 5.56. Huh? It was perfectly acceptible for .303BR and 7.62 NATO since the 1940's.

Rant mode on. The issue is not the danger area but the book being used. I can't understand how a range that was found to be safe and completely acceptible for decades should suddenly be unsafe and unacceptible. So, just who wrote the templates and what justification is being cited? Everytime a manual gets rewritten somebody worries about being responsible for promulgating something that might come back at them as unsafe. Invariably the rules get written tighter and tighter. The whole business of training for war and using the Queen's resources wisely falls further down the priority list. Rant mode off.

It had nothing to do with people changing rules. The traces have not changed and have always extended beyond military land. The land that the traces covered is owed by the dept of hyw, if I remember correctly. It is one of their gravel pits, as you can imagin over time they removed more and more earth from the pit giving less of a back stop. As well as in the past they were keeping access to the pit to a limited number of people and would let us know when it was in use. They have decided to no long secure the pit or inform us of when it is in use, so based on that it is no longer safe for us to keep the range operational. I may not be 100 percent on the specifics as this all happened before I started here, but that is the general jist of it.

You can also add the Fredericton Recreational Shooting Association's range in Springfield, NB (Fredericton area). We have a 600m range, and also a 1,000m range. At this point we only have fixed targets. See http://frsa.ca.

There is also a newly-built 600m range in St. Antoine, NB (Moncton area). It has a target gallery.

Both of these are RNBRA-affiliated clubs.

It's a shame....Camp Ipperwash in SW Ontario (not far from sarnia, onlake huron), used to be a "military" base (or more of a base for the reserves and cadets), but it had a nice long range (been there many times , but not for years), but if memory serves it was 500 yds+ or so, unfortunately, it is no longer availbable, seeing as the government "turned it back over" to the First Nations Reserve (don't qoute me on that , but i think it was first nations), now the place is all run down, and not much good for anything.

There use to be a rifle range in Burwash near Sudbury that was good to 600 yards. Does anyone know if it's still open to the public?
