Which 300gr bullet in a .375 H&H for moose and elk?

I have a matchbox full of bullets that look pretty much the same as those pics.

I spent a lot of time as a kid in the '50s, digging bullets out of dead moose.

But those came from my Dads .38-55. Most of those moose only went a pace or two as well, and I never saw one get away. I also saw a lot of two-shot doubles on cows & calves - most times, they fell within spitting distance of each other.

The difference seems to be that we'd spend an extra half hour sneaking up close. Funny how that works.

Now we need designer bullets and young cannons so we can snipe from 400 yards out the window of the Hummer, and camouflage is bought in a store and worn to the mall....:D

Being new to the .375 H&H I was concerned that some of the premium 300gr bullets may not expand reliably on a broad side lung/heart shot on the relatively thin hide and rib cage of a moose or elk. That seems to be a non issue from what I can gather from this thread.

After living out of a tent for a week and hiking for miles everyday, I may only see one elk or moose. I like the extra penetration that bullets like the TSX provide, in case, after all the hard work, the only shot I have at the vitals is at a less than ideal angle.

I was using 260 grain hornadys, and didn't recover anything because all rounds were through and through the moose.

While premium bullets are indeed good bullets, in my experience they are not really needed at 375 H&H velocities. My father and I hunted (and still do) with 300gr Sierra gamekings and they are a very accurate, tough, reliable and less expensive bullet. My dad is a dedicated double-front-shoulder shooter (hard on bullets) and I can tell you these bullets do not come apart at .375 H&H velocities, even at ranges of less than 50 yards. I've got a perfectly mushroomed one somewhere that put down a 69" bull moose with a double shoulder shot and it looks just like a bullet should after doing it's job. I'll post a pic when I find it. All of the 300 gr Gamekings I've recovered, or seen recovered, had the classic mushroom shape and had very good weight retention. The only difference I've seen between the 300 gr Gamekings and 300 gr Partitions, is the Gamekings cost half as much and have a better BC.

For whatever reason the 270 Hornady always had a pretty good reputation for reliable preformance.
Back in the 70's and 80's before we had premium 375 bullets the 270 Hornady was the recommended bullet of choice. In the quest for a better bullet my buddies and I tried the 300 GK.

I can say for certain you wont like that bullet after you try shooting something at longer range in something soft like the lungs. The core is as hard as the hubs of hell and will not expand. The end result (in my case) was a miserable tracking and follow up job.

Never happened to me, but my buddy had the core eject on that bullet at close range with heavy impacts....Bison in this case.

Of the Partitions I think the 260 is just as good as the 300 for NA hunting.
Expect to find it in the fur on the off side....Doesn't seem to matter what angle you shoot the game either. Look in the fur on the opposite side and there it will be...Strange but true.

I recovered a 270TSX from a smallish broadside moose...I was not impressed.
I am still fiddling with finding the perfect 375 bullet.

I think Swift may be the answer.

That was kinda' my question on post #22 I believe. Again, I had the opportunity to 'play' with my Son In Laws custom 375 H&H but I never had the opportunity to use it on game. So, I'm doing a lot of guessing as to the performance results of bullets of that caliber on game. With most half decent bullets and especially with some of the speciality bullets availeable, on North American game at average ranges, it would amaze me that bullets didn't 'pass through'.

Pourquoi?

The moose was smaller than an nice sized elk and I recovered the bullet on a broad side lung shot. With the original X I could have shot that little bull in the chest and the bullet would have likely exited his arse hole.

Great killer no doubt there, but I demand penetration above all else.
