Hi, I'm new here and just starting to get into guns. Have been out to the range a few times and have participated in two shoots with our local club. Have been using a Colt 357 that a buddy lets me use. (or is it a 357 Colt? - like I said I'm very new at this). As soon as my PAL arrives I want to get my first pistol and everyone I talk to suggests a revolver to start. While I like the Colt I'm using, I'm also interested in what other people like and why. I'm not yet up on all the technical jaron you guys use so please go slow.

I've tried the S&W 686, and 29-2. Also a Ruger Blackhawk 357/9mm but my favorite so far is the Ruger Red hawk 44 with a 5.5" barrel. However, I have just bought a Ruger GP100 357 and I'll have to try it out but as it is very similar to the Redhawk I think I'll like it to.

My favourite wheelgun by far is the Smith and Wesson Model 29 .44 magnum. It's hard to say why... I love the .44 magnum, the trigger on the M29 is amazing, and it's very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Mine, having an 8 3/8" barrel is also very controllable even with full-house loads.

Here's a pic of my Model 29-3.

Cheers!

Welcome to CGN.:)

I think you are already on the right track to make a decision.....keep going to the range and try as many different guns as you can, I'm sure that you'll find folks willing to let a new shooter try out a few

Don't dismiss getting a good .22 You can get in a lot of shooting while you look for a centrefire revolver and the extra practise is only a benifit.

SAA,
Its history speaks for itself.
Along with the wonderful LC , this combo gets a 10 in eys. Or would be number 1 , in the top 10 wheel guns of the past.
1-Colt SAA
2- S&W Model 3
3- Browning HP
4-S&W Model 29
5-Walker
6-Walther
7-Luger
8-10?

I'm partial to my S&W Model 28-2. Shoots .38 and .357 and has adjustable sights. It's very accurate and pleasant to shoot with SWC .38's.

Of course you can't own it, 'cause it's got the evil 4 inch barrel.

For me, it is the Colt Python. I have put more than a few rounds out of mine, and it performs as well today, as it did at purchase 20 yrs ago. They cost a little more, but it is easily justified in my mind.

The best buy in a centrefire revolver would be a good used S&W Model 14 target masterpiece in .38 special. Ellwood Epps even had one listed on their website for a good price yesterday. If you went with a .22, I would say to find a S&W model 17, which is identical to the Model 14 other than calibre. If you want to be able to use 357 as well, then a model 19, 27, 28, 586/686, a GP-100, or a Colt King Cobra would be the best bets price wise. Pythons are nice, but tend to be more expensive. This is all based on buying used, of course. A new Smith wheelgun is most likely gonna cost over a grand.
Just my thoughts on the matter,
Pat

you can`t go wrong with a 22 cal to start . the ammo is really cheap to shoot . And most of the time you can find a good revolver for a good price . And as far as a maker goes , everyone has their favourites . I like Smith`s . they make a great auto loader and revolver in 22 cal . the big thing is buy what you can afford . Joe
