WOW... prepare to be overwhelmed with responses. I have a 500, and I think it's great. for the money and available accessories and all-around use it's a real workhorse. BUT..... I wish i had bought an 870. Plus, i heard the 870 won some reader's choice best shotgun of all-time award or something.

Mine is, but it doesn't bother me. Parts like that can always be swapped for higher quality and whatnot for either brand. The Rem just has a more well built feel, but i've heard the lowest end ones only have a single slide bar but i don't think thats true...

There is no "wrong" one. Both shotguns have pros and cons. I have both, and personally I prefer the 500. The quality control on my 870 has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, but I have used several 870's that the government owns and have never had a problem. I prefer the safety location and action release on the 500 over the 870, but again, that's a personal preference. The initial price is more affordable, aftermarket barrels and parts are more affordable (notice how I'm not saying cheaper!) Another pro that I like is that the 500 will eat any and all brands of shells. My 870 absolutely hates the cheap walmart crap, and that's after I have polished the chambers and have a few thousands shells down the tube. The action is tighter in the 870, but I don't find the looseness of the 500 to be an issue. I'm going camping tomorrow, and the gun that will be coming with me is the 500 while the 870 stays home. Just my experience.

the mossy 535 is the better of the guns you are looking at .yes it does shot 3.5 inch shells but you do not have to .it does not rattel like the 500 .and is a much better gun then the newer 870 express hands down DUTCH

I just bought the 870, and love it shot 25 shells through it already and think that it is a great gun, when compared at the store the 870 seemed to be a much better gun

Owned both, sold the 500 for the 870 and also use the 870 at work. Love it. Not a single complaint! Someone mentioned quality control issues? I've never had a single problem or heard anyone having any problems with them from my circles.
Others may disagree, but for me personally, the 870 feels more solid. The action specifically on the 500 left me doubting the gun a bit, but that's just me.

This is going to be my first 12ga pump, and these both have alot of after market parts for them. I'm not looking at a 12ga that chambers a 3 1/2" shell (seems that is where the loading problems are coming from) as they are hard to get around my local stores.

Which one?

They're both good guns. Personally, the 500 doesn't fit me well, and i find that it kicks more than the Remmy for that reason. My son had the same experience. that being said, they're both great guns with a long and proven history. Try both, if you can, and go to the one that is most comfortable.

I'll have to second the Nova/Supernova, at least as a consideration. I was deciding myself between the Moss, Rem and Benelli. I have shot all kinds of shells through the Benelli's 3 1/2 chamber. Otherwise, I have heard a lot of bad things about the cycling action on the newer cheaper 870s. If you don't care about the 3 1/2 chamber, a used 870 wingmaster is always a good bet.

I have a 870 paid 400 bucks for it so far no jams no rust just seems like a nice first shot gun to buy. I have a 21" turkey barrel that came with the gun and a 26" and rifled slug barrel that I got from a friend and with this package I'll good to go. But both models can be bought with the 3 barrel combo, my only complaint is the mossy has a more shooter friendly safty.

Although I can't comment on the 870, I do own an older Mossy 500 that I love....28" ribbed barrel for birdies and whatnot, and a shorter slug barrel for Mr. Whitetail. The barrel can be changed in seconds..not that that matters
