Who hates a .270 Winchester?

I like the 270 and didn't come to that conclusion until I hunted deer at a longer range - out to about 400 yards. Definitely an Accurate rifle and still had enough energy to knock'em down with one shot...! I've not used a 270 on moose - but I would if that's what I had when one showed up.

hunter-4-life

Skipping a lot of useless history lol - my first rifle was a Remington 700 BDL in 300 WM. The first moose (and my first big game animal) i ever shot... i hit it in the front shoulder with 180 grain Rem Core-lokt bullet. It broke the leg but mushroomed down to almost nothing. I then switched to Nosler Partitions (used 165, 180 and 200) and then to Barnes TSX (stuck with 180). But as I became a gun nut and kept buying more and more and more and reloading for them, I can say i have used a lot of bullets EXCEPT Bergers!!!

I hunt for meat. I have absoloute schite luck as a deer hunter (I get them but I always seem to have to work at it) and I have incredible good luck as a moose hunter (if I am deer hunting moose walk up and go watch ya doing??? Its not moose season???) With the 270, the first doe was facing me directly and the second was slightly quartering. The bullets basically blew up inside the animal and there were fragments everywhere. Both were between 85 to 95 yards i think. Give or take a few steps. The buck was a running shot quartering away (not fast) at over 400 yards. Today I wouldn't take such a shot... but younger and stupider. Bullet missed hind quarter, went through lungs and along the way... blew apart and just destroyed the right front shoulder. All three dead there.

In thinking about this though... i think all 3 deer were from the same box of ammo. Maybe just a bad batch???

But I never truly thought about it as ohh... the 270 won't knock an animal down!!! I come from Manitoba and I know how guys have poached elk and moose galore with 22 mags. All three deer dropped right away so in terms of knock down.... really no question. Dead is dead. I can say in reverse when guys say you dont need a magnum for deer... dead is dead. I like them and I can shoot them all pretty darn accurately. If you destroy meat with one its generally because your using the wrong bullet and more likely shot placement. Last year I picked up a 375 H&H Ackley Improved. I loaded up 250 gr Barnes and started loaded development. I stopped at 3100 fps because I remeber going Frig... i think that last shot actually rattled my teeth!! I shoot max loads out of my 338 WM, 30-378 and 340 Wby and until that shot... i had never had a holy crap moment!

Only person that I know who truly questioned the 270 is the previous owner of my 270 BAR. If i remember the story... He apparently shot an elk at 400-450 yards with it (1 shot and he was a friggin good shot!!!) and the elk ran like 100 yards and died in the field. He was like hmmm.... he should have died right there. That was a saturday. On monday he went into the local sporting goods store and ordered a BAR in 300 Win Mag and that became his hunting gun till he died. I wanted to buy the 300 but his son took it, but i was able to buy the 270.

Side note... I do own Oakley sunglasses... I drive a Dodge and a Plymouth!!!! Dodge isn't lifted... YET... but i do want to restore it and the plan is a 4" lift. The Dodge can pass everything on the road but a gas station. The Cuda... well... its smiles per gallon because when you figure out what the ice cream cone really costs you after driving to get it... its more more like $60 versus $5.

Oh... and i totally agree on the ballistics points you made.

In 1989 a friend I went to Shilo Manitoba to compete in a 2 gun competition. We shot steel to 1200 meters. We both had Ruger No. 1s and mine was in 300 Wby and he used his 338 WM. You had to knock down the steel plates and the guys shooting smaller calibers had to time their shots so they would hit it at the same time almost. We had no such problem lol. Then you had to drag your partner (wounded soldier scenario) to the next shooting station. Well we almost died of exhaustion lol. Lastly... i have always been a poor not horrible but not good pistol shot. Thats where we lost out big time.

Anyways... i was shooting 180 gr bullets out of my 300 Wby and friend was shooting 230 grainers. Nothing special. Ironic to think that roughly 37 years later... showing up to a 1200 m shoot with those guns and normal bullets would be totally unacceptable!!!

Southern Ont has some specific areas that are a max Cal of .275 for small game/fur bearer seasons.

If you are hunting small game during an open big game season your open to other Cals as long as your in possession of a valid big game license (Deer, Bear & Moose). If not, your restricted to the lesser Cals under .275

For years LGS were recommending the .270Win as the best all-round Cal in Ont as it could cover off the typical Yotes-Moose with up or downgrading bullet grain range accordingly.

These days most LGS are suggesting the 6.5Needmore if your a Yote-Deer/Bear person which generally a large percentage of the new hunters are. While a little light on the Moose front for me, the 6.5NM has proven effective for the other three here equally well enough.

My Vanguard in 270 win is my favourite go to deer rifle, I was using a 270 wsm but I have returned to vanilla flavour. If I was to replace my 270 [I am not] I would now probably go 7 08, my wife has one so I am allowed to borrow it.

I have not shot a deer with my 270 , but I have shot 4 moose ( I shot 3 , my buddy used it to shoot 1). They were: 1@35m ish, 1@80m ish and 2 at ~200 m all 4 moose took no more than 4 -6 steps and fell over dead. Not sure how anyone could hate a 270. a great all around calibur

If that's all the good a .30-06 is gonna do ya, take a .243 next time. ;) What you say is so true of course, good story. Which is really all the more reason to err on the side of "too large." To your point, last year's big 10+ point whitetail buck i heartshot with a .30-06 at 19 yards reared up on impact and as soon as his front feet hit the ground again he came straight at me.
Any photographs of the big 10 point buck?

I’ve started down a rabbit hole on this one the past few days…

I like it (6.8 Western) , and you can back off on the PSI and it becomes a very mild mannered cartridge that performs like a big magnum downrange. One of my favorite loads is the 165gr Nosler ABLR over 57.0grs H4831sc @ 2760 fps. This is basically 30-06 performance, but the G1 BC of that bullet is .603 and it holds onto velocity way out there (2000 fps impact @ 600 yards)

To compare, a 30-06 165gr Nosler Partition @ 2800 fps MV, retains 2000 fps to 392 yards, and has 1640 fps at 600 yards)

Factory 6.8 165gr ABLR ammo does 2951 fps MV, which retains 2000 fps to 708 yards. It doesn't shoot near as accurate as my handload though, from my Model 70 Extreme Weather

I hate it but it does not have anything to do with the cartridge but rather a specific person who was pushing it on me in my youth and almost ruined hunting for me.

I now have a 6.5x55 and a 7mm rem mag, plus 30-06, no real need for a 270 and I bet I will never own one.
