Who shoots a 10?

I never owned an aftermarket choke for my Gold 10, ever!! Most factory chokes are made for the factories by the aftermarket companies to begin with. They just outsource the chokes for their guns. I’ve never fallen prey to the aftermarket choke game. Most important thing is pattern your gun, see which choke/load combination works best for you and if you’re not happy with the results from the factory chokes then experiment with others. The 10’s larger bore diameter gives a more “squared” shot pattern in flight and in combination with large shot in the increased payload is the reason it shines at longer ranges.

Very interesting to hear. That will be the first thing I do when I get one is pattern properly with hopefully a couple different kinds of ammo. If its missing chokes Ill just purchase them. I am pretty sure our local gun shop doesnt carry any ammo for the 10. Have to make a trip to the city and HOPEFULLY they have a couple to choose from. The one place is always more expensive but he has everything you could possibly want. For reloading too! Did a bit of online window shopping and yeesh there dosnt seem to be much selection out there! To be expected I suspect.

Unfortunately they are gone now but each season when I’d pass through Mississauga on my way to do an annual hunt with a buddy in St. Catharines I’d pull in off the highway at LeBaron and pick up two flats of 10 gauge ammo. They always had lots and used to have their buy 9 boxes get the 10th free promo as well as 10% off to LeBaron club members. They always had about as good of a selection as could be found anywhere else and their price was always a couple dollars per box cheaper. Other than that I had a friend who would bring some up each season from the US for me so that’s how I would acquire the more exotic stuff like the Remington Hevi-Shot etc.
By the way, to answer your earlier post I’m not that old to be one of the old timers with tales of yesteryear, YET but I am getting there, ;). My health issue that has taken down my love of waterfowling has been that I have developed a severe case of arthritis in my left knee and an injury from my snowmobile riding days that ended with a cracked vertebrae when I was 24. Both have really limited my mobility in walking fields, setting up decoys and getting in/out of and laying on cold ground in layout blinds the past few years since entering my 50’s. Now I mostly help my buddies out by scouting for them and carry my Nikon and take pictures of the birds. I still get the migratory fever but curb the hunting appetite with the camera primarily. :d

I use an H&R single shot 10 gauge occasionally, and love it. It makes a box of shells last a long time, and works very well on black ducks and mallards at longer distances. I have never taken it for geese, but might try it this year. Last year, I got into some mixed waterfowl where I would have cleaned up with the big 10 and instead brought an auto that jammed and kicked myself all day long.

IF I HAD THE MONEY I think I would hunt with a Browning Gold 10 exclusively after the first two weeks of duck season. I prefer a 12 in early hunting on the St. John River, as the shots are mostly close and you don't need much power. But once you get into the black ducks on the coast, especially the big redlegs from up north, it's nice to have that extra knockdown power. I've seen too many big redlegs soak up shots and still fly off, or hang around JUST outside shooting range. Most of what we do is jump shooting, so we don't get close over-decoy shots at those big blacks. And we pass shoot sea ducks.

The Gold 10 would make a hell of a sea duck gun!

At 50+ you are way to young to be giving up on Waterfowling. You would be the youngest in our group.

Oh man. So I got a phone call from the dealer who has been searching around for and giving me my options on available 10s.... Now I can choose either a sp or a gold! Both of them look to be in mint condition too! I am torn. I have been very loyal to Remington. All my shotguns are remis. I only own one rifle that isnt! BUT after starting this post and doing a bunch of reading online I was quite content with purchasing the gold. Now I am TORN .... Anything anyone can add in there to sway me one way or another would be appreciated! LOL

Tell my left knee, both ankle joints and right hand knuckle joints that! Apparently they didn’t get the memo!! ;)

Different topic. You taking anything? I train and compete in power lifting and do a lot of joint health stuff. Get some UC 2 and tripple the dosage for 3 months then normal dosage from then on out. If you really want a big kick start check out bpc 157. Its like magic.

I am a big fan of the 10 for waterfowl.
Started with a Mag 10 and was dumb enough to sell it.
Bought a lite gold about 4 yrs ago and love it.
Easy to clean and maintain.
Functions flawlessly with all makes of ammo including reloads.
Big plus is that it is a current model, so parts are obtainable ( I have never needed any).
Add a Wad Wizard "terror tube" choke and you will find if you hit them, they drop.

Biggest problem is finding ammo, so I buy it whenever I find it.

Thanks, I’ll look into that.

I’ve never owned an SP10 nor shot one, just handled one. I looked at them when I went looking for a semi10. Based on my research and what I saw/handled I bought the Gold. What really made my mind up was the SP10 was made off the Ithica Mag 10, Remington acquired the Mag10 rights. I had enough experience with a couple of friends Ithicas that though I was told Remington improved upon the design I was still a bit leery, when the sales guy at Gobles took down the Gold 10 they had on the wall and took the gun apart my first thought and I said it aloud was “that’s a Super X1 on steroids!”. He smiled and nodded yes. That was all I needed to see.....SOLD!!

What's the deal with the gold 10 barels? They had some different lengths? This one comes with a "regular" and a "turkey" barel. I think I've made up my min

....

Yes they had a variety of lengths available. Not everybody likes the same and not everyone hunts the same game. A 30” barrel attached to that massive receiver would make for one awful gun to deal with on a turkey hunt and just the same as a 24” wouldn’t offer the nice long shooting plane needed for busting high flying honkers or snows. Having different barrel lengths to choose from if you plan to hunt multiple species and different ways is a nice option if one can afford the $400 price tag for the extra barrels. I knew a fellow who used to use an Ithica Mag 10 roadblocker (20” plain barrel police version) for the controlled shotgun deer hunt in his area. I can’t imagine trying to push bush with a 10 gauge auto weighing 10lbs but add 12” more barrel as in the 32” standard length barrel on a Mag 10 and can you imagine trying to get that thing through tangly underbrush? Lol

Just tried to mount and swing my Mag 10 in the rec room. (20ft.x20ft.) almost knocked over a lamp and near broke a ceiling light fixture. I would wager it would hang up in the thickets.

Went over to a guys place tonight who has a sp 10 with a 26 inch barrel. Wow what a lovely piece! I loved the balance and how its found my way to the shoulder. I have read a lot about how the are large and clumsy but I think the weight is exactly what I am looking for. It will slow my swing down a bit allowing me more time to think about my shots. Im a pretty big guy, so a big gun for a big guy LOL

But I have decided to go with the Browning. I have a feeling I will feel the same way about the Gold 10. I decided on it for a few reasons. It looks in mint condition. If you didnt know any better you would think it was new out of the box. Comes with the 2 barrels. A 28 inch and a 24 inch both with full sets of chokes. Parts are easy enough to find including synthetic to replace the wood.

I hope its ok that I continue to use this thread as a means to post a bit more information about my adventure with the 10. Patterning, hunting. etc.

Thanks for the input.

You won’t want to go synthetic, the combination of added weight and density of wood absorbs recoil. The synthetic ones give a brain jarring sharp kick!! Mine came with a 26” & 30” barrels. I loved the balance and swing with the 26” on it and it was much easier rising from a layout blind and acquiring a target faster with the 26”.

That makes sense. I'd be curious as to what the weight difference would be. I went synthetic on my 1100 because I didn't want to ding or damage the wood yet I've used it as a paddle. Haha

Wood stock 10ga golds are not common both of my are synthetic and I never feel the recoil. They shoot like a 12 ga to me
Then again I am also a big guy. You want to feel a 10ga kick buy a BPS

Cheers
