Who shoots a 10?

I managed to score an Italian O/U 10ga bored out for steel. I had a Spanish sxs that had a similar treatment and carried it in the field a few times. Ended up ditching it and a bps 10. The bps was bought by the original owner when steel became mandatory and he hunted it hard. I got it for a song but it was not relatable enough to trust, I did shoot 4 snows in our spring season with it though. The sxs was just plain too heavy. As a big water blind gun it would have been ok but was too much for field hunting.

I have an SP-10, 30” barrel, wood stocks. Have Briley chokes, and a smooth bore rifle sighted barrel.

Definitely not everyday choice, but for pass shooting, turkey waay out, or with slugs it is impressive.

I would never not own a 10 now but ammo must be bought when found.

Cheers.

SP10 here with a 26" barrel and Patternmaster choke. It feels like a weighted 2x4 but it shoulders and fits me good and it crushes birds way further than I would even shoot.

I have had a BPS, didn't like the length/weight/balance.

Had a gold 10, felt good but didn't fit me right and cut my face when shooting more than a couple rounds.

Had SP10 30" and 24" slug barrel but didn't really use them, so I sold them.

Put a turkey choke in with a good patterning shell and it will flatten longbeards way out there.

Shooting a 12 with 3.5" is not the same. Not even close. And a SBE with a 3.5" has a pretty good kick to it.

You can't beat a 10 for crushing birds if you find the right set up.

I have a whack of 10 ga buckshot too that I bet would be awesome on coyotes!!!

I had an Ithaca Mag more than 20 years and loved it for pass shooting geese and cranes in SK. When we could use lead I used 3 1/2", 2 1/8 oz BB with the .040" choke constriction; especially Federal copper plated shot. On occasion I had some great fun pass shooting Mallards with the old paper WW Super X 2 7/8" loads of 1 5/8 oz lead #4. Those "light" loads would not cycle so it was one at a time but still great fun. When steel was mandated, I had the choke opened to .020" and shot 3 1/2" Remington BBB which patterned just over 90% at 40 yds so deadly. I sold it once I no longer had those hunting opportunities but I always believed there was no 12 ga that could match its performance on big birds at extended range. At a weight of 12 pounds and the 32" barrel, it swung very smoothly and recoil was no issue.

I have an old Spanish 10 sxs too, fun old piece. - dan
I still have my AYA 10ga SxS. Actually, it's my second. My 1st I:oops: 'foolishly' decided to part with, and then, as with a few other firearms in past, 10 minutes after do so, highly regretted that decission. Lucked out this time. The dealer I purchased that first AYA from, happened to bring another of the same. One BIG difference in this one is the VERY nicely figured wood. This one(y) I keep!!

So my goose peice is a remington 1100 in 3 inch that I just adore. It's an oldie but a goodie for most of my shooting. Early season honkers over decoys, we do some damage and harvest a few birds. A bit of pass shooting over water mid and late season.

Now with all that being said I have always wanted to try a cannon and say I have the biggest pipe in the feilds.

I don't want this thread to be a repeat of so many others out there of people arguing and comparing their effectiveness at ranges yadda yadda.

I want to hear what you got. Sxs? Pump? Auto? What you like or dislike about it? Ammo it likes? Ease of cleaning? Length of barel? Anything else you want to say!

I've been looking for an remi sp 10 for 3 years now but havent had any luck so maybe this will widen my eyes to other options.

Thanks guys
Had a Ithaca MAG- 10 for a few years ! Those BIG 3.5 inch held a LOT of BB shot ! Put Geese and Ducks down at a FAR distance aways Favourite 12 Gauge gauge was my Win Super X - TOTALLY reliable !
Still got a Rem M1100 2 3/4" with a few different barrels for field and skeet shooting . RJ

Hey RJ!! Its been a 'couple' years since I've cleared the cobwebs out of my AYA SxS. Still a few boxes of factory 3 1/2" Western Super X, 2oz loads of #2 kicking around. ;)Duces for Gooses. However, my favorite was the Federal Premium loads. Copper plated shot cushioned with granulated pollyeth. Was thinking of trying to get hold of the non lead shot 'required' these days to replace lead. However,:( having just passed birthday #78, I may hang tough and just give the AYA a rubdown every once in a while.

I still drag my double 10 out for geese. Generally field hunting as my 1301 comp has become my preferred waterfowl gun for hunting from my kayak
Still nothing beats a ten for throwing big shot

I had a sp 10 with a custom 26" ported barrel Briley chokes was a dream to swing compared to the stock 30".Did I use it yes ,but after a few times I found it was not much better than my Benelli SBE with 3.5" and in fact now use just 3" shells .The Hevi shot and Black steel in 3" have been more than deadly IMHO. The SP 10 has found a new home. but I still have a 10 sxs which might be going on EE soon. (update its gone)

Had a riot gun version of one of those for a while. I liked it. - dan

I just bought a BPS 10 with a 30” barrel. Looks beautiful. I haven’t hunted ducks or geese in years. I used to have an NEF SB2 about 30 years ago and shot lots of ducks with it and a few deer and bears too. It was a sledgehammer. This BPS that I just picked up feels massive. It’s like I’m shouldering a drive shaft off a pick up truck Lol. I might use it for bears over bait or something. Every collection should have at least one 10 in it.

I have had a BPS previously, it was a solid specimen as noted above. That thing didn’t fit me well, and beat me every time I shot it. I was sold on the 10gauge the first time a buddy and I put a paper plate up in a tree to “check pattern” and from 40 yards away it totally decimated the 2” poplar. It was incredible to see.

After I sold that I had a hard time finding another until I found an H&R single shot. It has much less recoil than the BPS did and handles much easier. I took it out on a couple goose hunts with buddies just for giggles, and it actually does an amazing job. There was 1 time in 2 outings I would have liked one more shot. Like mentioned a few times, it crushes birds WAY out there, I had a shock factor a few times as they just folded up and dropped.

Oh, and it absolutely dusts clays. lol.

I would like to pickup an SP10 one day, but funds are tied up other places in the mean time.
