Wholesale Sports and rifles..your own..

I feel for you Sealhunter. I've often wanted to take a rifle into Cabellas or WSS to fit it for a scope or rings. Instead I end up having to guess at fit, and sometimes return stuff. I keep several spare cheap scopes and rings on hand for comparison purposes, because this is alway a dilemma. At least WSS and Caballes have a good returns policy. I think its natural someone should want to bring a rifle into a gun store that sells accessories, and they should have a well thought out procedure for it that is made friendly to customers.

Those same parents think nothing when they walk past street hookers, panhandlers, junkies, and ex-cons. Every one is probably armed with a sharp blade or three and some nasty syringes.

You missed the point

So? 4000+ people die on our highways a year; so I shouldn't take my car to the mechanic?

The reason store clerks are antsy is because of all the idiots who come into the stores with unsafe and loaded guns.
They dont want to get shot -

Seems like a reasonable state of mind -

I cant help but wonder where we are going to get our hunting supplies if or when Cabelas, or Wholesale or le Baron are gone.( Walmart?? Canadian Tire..?)Because as shooters we bycott them.?

I try and support any establishment that attempts to support my shooting hobbies.Of course I shop by price but I do try and support.
Nfld doesnt have a WSS but we have several stores that do thier best to supply the shooting sports. Are they always knowledgable No.Do they always have what I am looking for.( Seal Clubs etc j/K).No..

Their hunting rifles yes, but I doubt their Handguns (CCW). :D

You know, it's weird but I've never seen anyone open carrying in Cabela's or Bass Pro's in open carry states. Like for example, I've been to both Cabela's and Bass Pro several times in Arizona which is an open carry state and I've never seen anyone open carrying every time I've visited those stores...

I think that is for totally different reasons. I was at one of the big Cabela's stores in the states and though I didn't see signs like that I am sure they were there. In that store, they had rack after rack of rifles and shotguns on the floor where even poor little children could access them. (Nobody thought of the children!) They were there for anybody to fondle and weren't held down by any cable. I don't suppose it would be too difficult to bring in your own (empty) case to have an employee 'check your rifle' and walk out with a stolen gun.

Hm well, the reason the "check your firearm" signs are there is to stop the morons from bringing in loaded firearms and hurting someone. There isn't an IQ requirement to own a firearm in most states (ie test) and as a result, customer service would be required to prove it safe. Most likely done as a safety concern, but also from the aforementioned insurance requirement.
If some thieves are cunning enough to establish a plan where they can swipe one of those open long guns on the far right of the gun wall in those stores, then I suppose it's going to happen. I'm sure they try to minimize the theft as much as possible with certain measures.

I am in complete agreement with this statement.

Grande Prairie...

I'm not real familiar with wholesale Sports...this year was my first time in one I think..

Anyhow, I have been in the Grande Prairie one a few times and today I wanted to try some gear on a rifle...mainly a bipod and scope..

I go in, no bolt in the gun, trigger lock on and holding it muzzle down trigger up...

Well holy s**t...

Someone started yelling "wait !!!! wait!!!!" and then someone else started calling for a manager...

So I go over to the people yelling and put the rifle on the counter. Then the hunting dept manager comes down and I explain I am looking for a scope, mounts possibly a bipod. He said," well you can put your gun back in your truck, (do I drive a truck ?) and we can get those things.

I said I wanted to actually try the stuff on the gun...make sure it was what I want...

ohhhhhh he says.. so he carries my gun.

Instead of putting it on the counter in a mount or something, we go up and down the aisles getting the stuff and try putting it on the gun in the middle of the aisles on the floor.

Now if that guy is a member here, I will saythat he was super helpful and did a good job,..but for a hunting and shooting store, I was disappointed with the overall process.

I thought Ashley was the manager of that dept in GP

News Flash Cabela's and Wholesale sports are the walmarts of the sporting goods industry and if they could get away from selling firearms they would and that being said in the future they likely will so everyone had better start supporting there independent GUN SHOPS soon.

she probably is,.. they paged for hunting manager, and the huy who came I assumed was the manager,..he might not have been though..
I'm not from GP, I'm from south of Calgary up here twinning 43 to beaverlodge and have nothing but praise for the WS up here. I bought a malin 17hmr and a scope that had to go back 8 times. No fault of theirs, just bad luck with the manufactures I picked to buy. I walked into the customer service all 8 times with it uncovered straight outa my truck with no bolt in it and never had a single problem. I find them very easy to deal with compared to the one in Calgary. I also like Bartons but find their ammo prices 10-12% higher than wholesales. But I go there anyway cuz I won the longest tail for yotes this year lol. I like all the attitudes in GP more so than down south ,,so I'm srry you had trouble but I hope it was the exeption instead of the rule.

Barring some consignment or trade deal that is to good to pass up. I'm struggling to find a positive reason to walk into Wholesale Sports with a gun.

After hearing a few comments, I have no doubt that it might not be the exception, possibly just different counter staff and my poor luck...

It was not the worst experience of my life, I was just surprised by the response. I did get the equipment I went to purchase and it was all fitted before I left...

I really like Barton's, Jack, hmmm well,,, he is Jack and I'll leave it at that, but the new guys who have taken it over have done a great job, my good buddy has worked there for a number of years, you probably know him, from Hythe, he's out now for a while, had surgery I believe last week or the week before. They supplied my wife with a very nice wedding gift when I got married...

As for the supplies, you are not gonna beat Barton's or WSS...up around here...

but, ..for knowledge or anything whetherby, Ron at the tackleshack is heads above the rest,...and has one damn fine collection as well, and great experience guiding and very experienced with big calibres...even does a bit of smithing for a few...
