good luck all..:D have a safe and good hunt out there fellow nutz..

Good luck to everyone. Doesn't look like I'll get out this year. We only have one small area here in the county and likely a few hundred hunters that want to use it. I'll have to look at broadening my horizons next year.

I am hoping to go this weekend. A friend and I have permission to hunt on a few farms out here. Going to take the bow out first and give it a try. This will be my first year hunting turkey.

As usual, I'm too busy this time of year to take time off to do the turkey course. My neighbour has been bow hunting them for a few years, but his bow was stolen last fall. He did manage to make time to get his PAL over the winter so at least my 12ga gets to go turkey hunting (with him). On a high note, I am taking this weekend off for the trout opener (no course required).

Well, rained all morning. Was I ever glad I decided to use a pop up blind today.

The only thing that came in was a hen. Kinda funny because that is the same thing which happened last year. Tried a stalk and charge on a jake on my way out. I new what would happen before I even started. At least I got to warm up the barrel.

Anybody else have any luck?

Well, got out this morning and got a little moist, Buddy that was hunting one field over managed to get a Jake, and one single Jake snuck up from my right side, coming along the field edge where I was setup. I tried to get the bow up up slowly but got busted. And he clucked his head off about 45 yds away for a good 10 minutes. The rain really started to come down at 7:30, and I had to get a second coat of drywall mud on, at a job I am working on, so that was it for me. Oh well, we heard at least 6 Gobblers in our hunting area, maybe eight, so things are lookin good this year.:D

Sun broke out here for about 25 minutes and out came the Turkeys. I saw four Toms and about a dozen hens.
Beretta Extrema II with Winchester 3 1/2 #6s, about 45 yards. Nice two year old, 7/8s Spurs, 9 inch beard, 21.5 pounds.

I guess it will be quiet around the wack shack now!!
Nowhere near the wack shack.... this one was on another managed property down the road. Lots of road hunters in the area and this property needs watching. One kind of Turkey or the other, makes no difference to me.:shotgun: ;)

I got back about an hour ago from opener. Not so much luck today. It was 4 of us and we were all split up. I could hear gobbles a distance away, but couldn't get anything within eyesight. We were all able to hear a few gobblers, but only 1 guy in our party actually got to see one. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait till next tuesday when I get my next opportunity to head afield.

Had a couple hens come by, and something that wouldn't come around the tree I was sitting at. No luck today. Luckily I've got a week off so I'll wear the bastards down.

Left the night shift at 04:45 this morning, met the old man and a buddy, pissing down rain, set up by 05:45 stopped raining. Nothing for the first hour or so, then 7 flew down on the farthest south guy(kinda late) and headed out across the field.
I only saw the two that hung around, they came back across the field to with in 100 yrd.s, you could tell they were spooked abit, took thier time and wanderd in to the bush. Did some sporatic calling for another 1/2 hour or more to see if theyd come around, raining hard now and time to put the kid on the bus and get some sleep.
Saw 5, including a big strutting Tom on the way home:rolleyes:
Oh well, cant get out till about 09:00 tommorow, but we,ll give it another try.

Good luck guys, nice bird BIGRED.., Todd

im not ###..........but i like your bird:D

Well we had a very interested hen about 7 am come over to my decoys and start feeding....pushed her off once I made sure she was all alone.....12:00 saw a big coyote come busting out of the hardwoods 50 yards away from me..at least it was that far after I was positive it wasn't a loose dog...3 rounds of 3 1/2" #6 dumped him on his face and he bugger had the strength to get up and run off leaving a nice blood trail. One less Coyote for me to deal with!

I'm hitting Fogducker's this weekend. Not a high density area, but hey, it's quiet, and I can check out the deer/bear/coyote sign.
Keep in touch Bob, let us know ifyou spot /or get any!!! We will be there in a couple of weeks!

Put one to bed last night without seeing how big it was, set up on him early.

Had three calls going, and sure enough out comes hen #1...then hen #2.....then "the stud" LMAO, smallest jake I ever saw, strutting like crazy 10 yds in front of me. I go bored watching him after 10 minutes or so, so I asked him if he was having a good day. He didn't stick around to reply :D

I'll se if I can find his daddy tomorrow.

Hey BigRed,

I thought I heard the sound of the Deliverance soundtrack while I was reading your post :D . Best of luck getting your bird.

My first turkey

Well I got my very first turkey this morning at my Uncle's farm in Lanark county. It was quite an exciting hunt!!! Talk about buck fever, turkey fever is 10 times worst. I saw lots of turkey's yesterday, including a big strutter that my aunt asked me NOT to kill. Anyway, I roosted the birds last night, setup near them @ 5:00am. Hear the boss tom gobbling at first light. It just sent shivers down my spine! Heard the birds flydown. Heart was already starting to pound. Gave a few soft tree yelps to let the birds know where I was. 3 hens approched my decoys then they all disappeared over the hill. I sat for another 1/2 hour waiting for them to reappear. Still no luck, then when I was going to give up, I hear a soft cluck & there is a hen 10 ft away from me. She stared at me for a while then continued towards my decoys. I then heard the strangest noise, a sort of low bass drumming sound. I looked to my right & the boss tom was 20 ft away moving right towards my decoys. I could hardly hold the gun from shaking!!! Then a nice jake appeared 30 ft in front of me & moving from my right towards the decoys, I didn't hesitate, as soon as the reddot was on his neck I pulled the trigger on the Mossberg. BOOOOOOOOM the shotgun roared & the jake hit the grass. The other turkeys sqwaked but stayed put. I jacked another round into the Mossberg & the turkeys didn't seem to notice. The boss tom ran over to the fallen jake & kicked at it. A minute later he was back to strutting in front of me. It was all I could do not to take that magnificent longbeard, but my Aunt's wish's must be heeded. His beard was so long it almost seemed to drag on the ground! I sat & watched the birds for another 45 minutes or so. They were never more than 100ft away. I also saw him breed 2 of the 10 hens he had with him. It is a hunt I will NOT soon forget! Would have been nice to have shared this hunt. Oh well it might not have turned out the same if I had had company.

The jake was a beautiful bird that weighed 16lbs & had a 3.5" beard. Spurs were only about 1/8" long. I am one happy hunter! Good luck to everyone.

Congrats on your first bird.

"I then heard the strangest noise, a sort of low bass drumming sound."

The sound you heard was called drumming and spitting, it is quite unique isnt it. I have only heard that noise from mature toms, and never from jakes. Sounds like you could of had a decent sized tom turkey. Good thing you didn't shoot it though, as were only allowed 1 bird a day.
