Why do guys love the Rem 760/7600 pump rifles so much?

Not popular in Alberta, to many long shots(imho). I have seen great shooting of coyotes with an AR. So it’s not just a bolt only thing. All the guys I hunted big game with used bolts or some form of single. I may be in the minority but I’d take one of my singles over any pump.

I had a nice 760 gamemaster for 6 or 7 years but I never came to love it.
Pretty rifle. Free floated barrel made it plenty accurate. 1.5" groups with remington corelokts.
Length of pull a little too long in my opinion, and I'm 6'. And the length of reach to the forend requires orangutan arms to be comfortable lol. Maybe that's just me though, I prefer my support hand on a rifle to be back further. Like half on the floorplate. I do a lot of freehand shooting and the further your support hand is out in front of you the harder it is to hold up your rifle for more than a few seconds.
Also, the trigger group is akin to the 870 so trigger is not great.

I put the Timney kit in my 7600 and 7615. Still not quite as good as a good trigger on a bolt action but it is a big improvement over the way it comes from factory.

That's true currently , but they were very popular in the 60's and 70's and there's still quite a few kicking around . I have three friends that still use them in 308 , 338 Federal ( Blargons old rifle ) and 35 Whelen . I still use mine in 30/06 occasionally , but , in all honesty , my bolt action 06 sees more time in the field .

With a peep sight, you can one-hand carry by the front of the receiver/slide tube as handily as any lever action. Really slim and balanced there.

I put a 20 gauge 1100 stock on my 7600. I like it a lot better than the Monte Carlo hump.

So, shotgun stock + receiver sight = fast .30-06 that carries like a lever and handles like an 870. Lots of value there.

Sorry guys I have to bring this thread back from the dead. I have just purchased a new to me 7600 in 30-06 and I can't wait to hunt with it this fall. Can we talk about sling mounting options for this rifle? I think the standard uncle Mike's screw into the butt stock is universal but I have seen some front slings mounted to the front handguard or a barrel band? What is the best way to mount a sling to these for the long haul? I'm not interested in a barrel band if the eventually come loose sliding up and down the barrel and scratching the blueing.

Does anyone have pics of their 760 or 7600 and how they mounted the sling. Thanks

Wouldn't be my first choice.

I like to shoot from prone off a rest if possible. Getting a second shot off accurately would be a pain.

That said, my buddy has one and it is his go-to rifle out of a half-dozen or more rifles he has.

My Dad's Old 7600 has the barrel band. I'f I think about it later I'll post up a pic.

I just picked up a 7600 35 whelen. I’m trying to like it, I want to like it. Feels large, heavy, clunky, and loud. Haven’t shot it yet. Seems to fit the shoulder well, guess that’s something.

^^^ In the Whelen try a stout load behind a 250gr bullet, then all you have to do is push the forearm forward(Amish machine-gun).

Uncle Mikes and Grovtec make both systems for either forend or barrel mounting and should be found at your local GS. I have several 760's with both systems and I think it's just personal preference, mine were bought with the choice of previous owner. Of the 5 that have bands none have scratched or caused rust, they are tapered to go on one way and do give a bit of flexibility for sling loop length.
With the forend mount, take the sling off and you forget its there.

In the pic the .35 is without, and the included spacers move the mount beyond the forend on 760/7600.
The '06 Carbine has the mount installed.
The .257 has a hole D&T in the forend (too lazy to look for it).
The .270 Carbine is one of barrel bands.
Preference and aesthetics= your choice.
