Why do guys love the Rem 760/7600 pump rifles so much?

Because they work as intended. My dad carried one for years with Lyman peep sights. Great woods rifle, a little muzzle heavy but good weight for offhand shooting. Most shoot as well as a bolt gun of the same vintage. What's not to like?

There are many hard core bolt gun shooters out west who will never like a pump rifle. Most of those folks have nothing but disdain for a pump rifle having never used one.

I will second many of the aforementioned attributes for the pump gun with 1st hand experience. One of the reasons for it's success is the lack of reliability of the 740/7400 rifles. The 760 is far more reliable while still offering a fast 2nd shot if required.

Much is made of the lack of reliability of the Reminton 740/742 semi's. I have owned three and never a bobble with feeding or extraction. In my experience any problems with feeding or extraction can be solved by a new magazine in the 740/742 line. They are robust and adequate hunting rifles. IMO a lot of this stuff is just repeated horror stories from a few sources and the teller has NO personal experience with these rifles.

Very popular in central Ontario where deer are often shot at sub 100m ranges whilst moving from the standing/freehand shooting position.

That said, I prefer bolts myself.
Myself at one time and others have used them here in similar situations, nice setup for pushing bush between cutblocks. I seen one posted here in 35 whelen with a 20” barrel and peep sights that I can’t stop thinking about but like yourself I prefer a bolt.

I've never shot one but I could get interested in a carbine with a shotgun stock (no Monte Carlo) and an aperture sight. And, I'm a sucker for barrel band swivels.

To be contrarian, I don’t love either if those rifles. I find neither to be impressive accuracy wise, I have seen people shortstroke them and cause stoppages. The trigger isn’t great, nor is the concept to me.

Also to be contrarian, a bolt gun can be inaccurate, be short stroked (causing stoppages) and come with a crappy trigger.

Many folks, millions in fact, bought 870s over the years. The 760/7600 was a natural extension of the 870, but not for everyone.
