Why do you hunt bears?

I would love to hunt bear in the spring; unfortunately we cannot do that in Ontario. I enjoy all aspects of bear hunting but really like coming to the bait and the bear is just outta site making all kinds of noises trying to scare you off while you re-bait.

OOOOOhhhhh it'll be back when you stop making noise. All that noise is the dinner bell!!

Because I hate them STINKING,MOOSE CALF KILLING,CABIN SMASHING,GARDEN RAIDING,SH-T ALL OVER MY DRIVEWAY AND YARD,SCREEN DOOR RIPPING,SMOKEHOUSE TIPPING,CHEWING THE SEAT OFF MY DIRT BIKE,CANT SHOOT EM' IN THE SPRING(WELL......),DOG TANTALIZING BASTA--DS!!! THATS WHY!

:D :D

I worked in forestry, and I worked alone in the bush alot.

nothing worse then comming back to the quad to find a bear eating the seat

Or the one chewing on the gas can in the back of my truck  yep right up in the box, and he didn't want to leave

and the little ones that follow you around for hours while your surveying line, just far enough away that you can't see them all the time but you know they are somewhere near.

and those big fat buggers sleeping in the cutblock berry patches that you stumble across and wake up when they are only 10' away

Oh I hunt bear because bear have pissed me off, oh and they are tasty :D

peperony and a ham mmmmm but has to have a good hide so as to hang on the wall I have shot in my earlier years cause I liked the hunt and was meat crazy but I will only take one more and its going to be a big one any one after this one will be with camera or got into my comfort zone

Hunting bears has always had a special appeal to me. They are a magnificent big animal that are always challenging to hunt. One of the more thrilling animals to hunt & great to eat too :D.

It's nice to see that most posters enjoy eating bear meat or are at least willing to try it. For years I used to watch people treating bear like carp, taking the hides and dumping the meat. I love hunting bears but don't really have any need for any more bear rugs, so now I just enjoy the hunt and everything that goes along with it. If we get a bear I'll find a home for the skin, process the meat and keep the skull for myself. I even harvest the fat off the animal and donate it to some local native elders who use it for ceremonial purposes. The longer you hunt bears the more you will admire them, they're an incredible animal to watch up close and personal!

I baited for a few years, but now I prefer to spot and stalk.
I spend the sring bear hunt in moose calving/nursing grounds looking for bears that are waiting to deminish the moose population.

If I get to take a moose marauder great, if not, that's ok too.
I just enjoy being out there, taking one of my favorite rifles for a nice, long walk.:)
Usually get to see some cows with calves.
Last year I saw two different cows that had twins.

I hunt them because they #### in my buckwheat, and I know where. Then they have a big picnic to celebrate.:p

I don't like baiting. If you do then more power to you. I just don't have the patience to sit and watch the bait and I"m too lazy to keep the baits serviced.

I have done some spot and stalk in B.C. but now I'm too old and fat to climb around on the mountain then bust my hump packing a bear off the side hill.

I do like hunting bears in the spring as it's a great time of the year to get out, and I do like the meat. It is not textured like pork, it does not look like pork and it does not taste like pork. If it must be compared to something other than another bear it is closest to beef, except the meat is courser grained and darker in color. I've served bear roast to many non hunters who though it was beef and came back for more.

So I'm old and lazy but still enjoy the challenge so I call for bears. It is effective and allows me to move on when I get bored. I don't have to get more than a couple hundred yards from the truck and even the small bears provide some entertainment.

For eating I prefer a spring bear that has been out and feeding for a while. It is tricky to find one that is gaining weight but isn't rubbed yet. Calling allows lots of time to assess the bear.

It is also entertaining to have a newbie go calling for the first time. When the bear is inside the 30 yard mark it does get the adrenalin going.

An old Native lady who was almost a mentor to me back in the day would skin/process as many bears as you could bring her.As a couple of previous posters said they liked the fat.She often said that bear fat when rendered properly produced the finest lard/shortening of any animal domestic or wild.Kinda makes sense as she was renowned for her pastries at some flyin camps and C.N.R. rail gangs in N.Ontario.

When I was working out in Terrace we used to see 20+ bears a night but I never got a chance to hunt. I'd love to be able to go on a spot and stalk hunt out there. Juist being in the mountains and glassing clearcuts is neat. you get the opportunity to watch a lot of bears when they're out. Just thinking about it makes me miss BC. Well maybe one day I'll be able to hunt out there without having to pay an outfitter a gazillion dollars!

Looks late the season will be late coming this year. Calling for a pile of snow tomorrow. I'm usually already out at my bait sites getting them ready to go. well, maybe the flooding will force them out of their dens and I can track em in the snow.:D

This will bring em out of the woodwork I'm sure ;)

I hunt bears because I enjoy it

Me too and they are delicious. It is so much fun because the weather is usually fine, lots of pent up energy from a long winter and the danger factor is always a cool rush.

One of the best hunts for me was when I was tracking a bear I saw that ran and after a short time walking up the side of a hill and seeing it now and again in the distance I heard it. The bear sounded close by but it after looking around I saw that it was behind me. The hunter was being hunted.
I didn't shoot it but it sure was a rush.

Bears are a great hunt, they are easy enough to get that you can experiment with other hunting methods (i.e black powder or bows) and they are one of the few animals that you can use so much of. Meat gets eaten, hide gets tanned, skulls (once bleached) are popular, etc. They are also plentiful, and hunting pressure on them is low, so there is no concern whatsoever regarding overharvesting.

I hunt for the trophy, though my buddy takes all the meat. I also do it to do my little part of keeping the bear and deer population in check. I also hunt bears for the thrill of it, for the challenge of it, and because it lets me hunt big game early in the year.
