Why so much .22lr ammo now?

Local Wholesale has the 400 round bricks of American Eagle for $50, and they wonder why they're not selling? Last time I asked about why so expensive, they said there is a "shortage". What there is a shortage of is 22 priced at reasonable prices, as the same bricks used to be about 1/2 the price. With metal prices dropping, I'd hope the prices drop sometime, but the pricing is still playing on the "shortage" fears. When people stop buying at the high prices, prices will go back down to where they were.

No doubt...there are retailers still banging the "shortage" drum...but last time I checked, our dollar is pretty crappy compared to the US dollar. Considering the vast majority of ammo we use in Canada comes from the US, you can't expect retailers to eat the difference. Every US dollar costs us $1.27 Canadian today...and considering our dollar was at par with the US when the ammo "drought" kicked-in (I THINK I have the timing about right) then naturally, something a Canadian bought in the US for $3 then will cost $3.81 today.

The HMR question is the biggie for me at the moment. I don't use a whole lot of it, but I haven't seen stock of Hornady 17gr. in a long time.

I get a kick out of what they want for the American eagle and it's not even a full brick!!

the zombie apocalypse never happened, Obama never introduced any stringent gun control, hoarders stopped hoarding, government (DHS) stopped buying out all stock at the stores....world keeps on turning....

I was just in Nevada and there was some around but nothing compared to what you will find here. Everyone had signs up ".22 Ammo here", etc. but only a few boxes of a few brands. Bass Pro had a grand total of 15 boxes on the shelf, it was strange to see!

Glad I bought cheap and stacked it deep... Prices are outrageous due to our dollar....

45$ for 525 golden bullets... No thanks I have some with 19.99 price tag on it from 2 years ago :p
Seen boxes of 50 AE for 5.65 at CT, pais 2.30 2yrs ago

Gouging isn't necessarily at the retailer level; factory and distributor are looking for a piece, too.

Remington seems to have upped their prices more than any other company, so all the people complaining about the current cost of Golden Stingers and Thunder Cats and Yellow Bees and Bucket O Sonics, find something better to shoot and save money. Wal*Mart has been getting in the Remingtons out here now, and while they got better pricing than anybody else on 'em, still more than I'd pay for the stuff.

Winchester is still very cheap at W*M, but some stores aren't competing at all. Those, ahem, ‘collectible’ mini wooden crates of Super X are at Bass Pro for $40, and frequently $60-65 at other places.

Federal has some reasonable bulk target stuff, but some hunting rounds are getting over-priced and their match stuff is bonkers.

CCI remains reasonably priced, but people tend to sweep the shelves when it comes in. And the *good* stuff like Pistol Match isn't coming in at all darnit.

Canadian Tire's ammo supplier appears to be gouging them right now, so they pass the gougings on to us! The wholesale price on many things is what I'd expect to be paying retail.

European match ammunition hasn't doubled and tripled in price (thank goodness!), making it a much more attractive proposition when crap is almost as much per shot.

I'm glad for all you guys that have access to lots of ammo. We haven't had any 22 ammo up here for what seems like a couple of years now. Hopefully with all this reading that the ammo is on its way back, some may make it back to the end of the road where I live one of these days. Good shooting everyone, Toni.

All the lgs around the Okanagan have a large supply. Prices are way up which means it's almost as cheap to shoot SK standard plus for the same price as bulk crap.

bucket of bullets is still over priced.... It stocks you up so well though... 80 for it... 1400 rounds.

Good thing my friend purchased it ! haha gota love it... Used maybe 100 rounds today.... Rest is in my possession hahahaa..
