Why the hell do people hunt with semi auto rifles??

Semi Auto

Easy there, just because you (and myself) don't hunt with a semi, doesn't mean they don't have their place. Some of the best hunters I know use semi's because they are just the ticket for heavy bush cover where dogs are used and the deer are really flying. A reliable semi with a good low powered scope is very popular in several hunting camps. Just ask Tikka, he'll tell you. Cheers!

Tod B raises a good point that is equally applicable to any hunting rifle action you care to consider. Autoloaders don't appeal to me much beyond technical interest but I do know good and ethical hunters who use them and use them well. I just tuned a BAR and shot a few flats through it while dialing in a new scope for my brother--fun to shoot and as accurate as us mortal creatures could ever ask for.

The point might be true that the model in question isn't always a reliable performer but it's also true that mental attitude is everything. Some fellers shoot ancient Model 94s and knock 'em dead consistently.

What do you like?

Yep! I as well now and then use a semi auto when deer hunting. Ruger .44 and Ruger Mini 30. I also use bolts, levers and pumps. :D What ever I feel like hunting with as long as it's legal. I don't like anyone telling me what type of action I can or can't use. Thats just one more reason I vote Conservative.
Just thought i would throw that in:cheers: Tikka

i know alot of people who own 742's 7400's and 750's and they've never had problems they don't use scopes just iron and peep sights and still get 1'' groups at 75 yards and still shoot deer in the head so nuff said to you semi auto bashers there fine you just have to know how to take care of your which most of the time seems to be the reason people choose bolt because they either don't know how or don't want to take care of there guns and for the people who ##### about follow up shot i own a 7600 30-06 and im a dogger so ya 4 or 5 shot usually happen because our bullets have a hard time tryin to get through the brush and who care if people shoot more than one shot just shut up and keep your opinion to yourself if you think your the almight hunter because you owna bolt ans kill the deer with on shot at 500 yards running full out then hooray for you i guess that make you a better hunter than me then doesn't it

That is the longest incomplete sentence in the history of the english language. Please cover the eyes of any women or children who may be walking past your computer and bear witness to this abomination.

I'm not impressed with civvy jammomatics, but my grandpa once used his to drop 2 5x5 bucks one behind the other as they jumped a fence 75 yards from where he was posting. My Dad gave up on his 10 years ago and bought a Sako bolt action. My Uncle still uses his, but he refers to it as his single shot. If you have one that is reliable for you, then have at 'er. I'll stick to my bolt.

Since lead has been outlawed for Migratory I've switched to Barnes for my Model 4 in 30-30(special order)! You can pick those Geese off no matter how high they are. If you start at the back of the flock (or at least on the second last) bird in the flock, you can just work your way forward and pretty much get your limit from one flock! But you hafta go down to the states and get one of the 10 round clips first, cause they can't ship them to Canada.
Best Bartell can probably do is pick off a few low flying (slow flying) gulls with that 10/22!

I collect Ruger .44 carbines, and hunt deer/black bear with two of 'em! I use an old style (1976) and a new deerfield....IMO the .44 mag combined with a semi action is the best damn dogging gun on the planet. When you jump a deer at 15 yards, or have a wounded deer running in front of the dogs right past your stand, having 5 shots good to go can be a big plus.

I agree! Although I think most of us still like our bolts. hey Todd! I think us guy's who use semi's now and then have a good point. "BUT" you are correct about the Remington "JAMMOMATIC" they are crap in my opinion as well.;)

I can't believe I'm reading this on CGN. Why hunt with a firearm at all? Be a real trooper and take it down with your bare hands!

Nothing wrong with a good semi auto for hunting.

Here's Camk and myself setting up :D

I am new to this forum...have hunted big & small game for over 40 years....I am astonished at the number of nonsensical comments concerning gun preference. I enjoy the camp camaraderie, the woods, getting away and certainly seeing game, whether I have the necessary permit to harvest or not. I have had all the firearm actions over the years and have my preferences for my own reasons... if I choose to wait for a buck and pass up a doe which I could shoot...that is my choice, same as the firearm action and also if I prefer hunting swamps or clearcuts or thick bush or open fields that is my choice...so my point is...lets stop attacking each other and regard others opinions as valuable as our own.
What action(s) do I now use ? ....guess

In my opinion the subject here isn't so much the type of action used, but rather in the manner in which some of the users of semiauto's hunt with them. I prefer bolts myself, but could care less what a person uses, I only show disgust when I see somebody carelessly spraying the countryside with bullets on a running deer in hopes that they hit it. That deer can move a fair distance while unloading on it and in the heat of the moment can carry that muzzle around into an unsafe direction. I take one shot, only shoot at standing or slowly walking deer, usually under 300 yds. I know what my target is, whats behind it, and if I were to miss the shot I will wait for the next deer. I see no pride in riddling a deer with bullets, and am admittedly not a good enough shot to hit a running deer effectively. Most people aren't but think they can up the odds with a semi, but have seen pump and bolt action guys do just the same, albeit a bit slower. Common sense, a rare commodity now a days.
