Why the hell do people hunt with semi auto rifles??

I have noticed when I am hunting with either my bolt action or Winchester levers, that the deer after the initial sound of the gun, will run a ways and when they hear the action cycle, they pause to see if they can locate the cause of the noise. This is bush hunting not the long range, across the field shooting.

Hunting thick bush in Ontario sometimes the question at Deer camp could be....Why the hell would someone hunt with a bolt?

The deer camps I've seen are full of semi's, pumps and levers.....bolts not so much.

I shoot all actions, but for me a reliable semi-auto rifle is ideal for in the bush, just as a semi-auto 20 gauge is ideal for cottontails. My preference.

My 7400 is clean, reliable and accurate....never had a problem.

Bash the semi's, maybe it'll make you look smart, maybe you'll look like an elite hunter, it might make you look cool, maybe it'll make your #### bigger....

I call BS!

I had one for 20 years (the semi(the semi rifle)) and it never made mine bigger! Oh, and that "other" rumor, my visions still fine and my palms are hairless. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet cause some of it is just wrong!

I wouldn't be arguing the toss about hunting with semi-autos.
At least you have them.
If you don't want to use them fine, but one day you might.
Then you'll be sorry.
And also remember, if you think it's ok to let them take semi-autos off you what's next?
It's a slippery slope.

People hunt with semi autos for the same reason that they hunt with flintlocks, bows, lever actions etc. They do require more maintenance than your typical bolt gun, but you do not require .5 moa to fill the freezer with meat. My advice to you is take your bolt action hunting rig down to Camp Perry on a national service rifle competition, and see how you fair shooting against the pros with iron sighted m14's and m1 garands. good luck

Multi-tasking!

Indeed X2.
What's next?
Arguing about automatic transmissions over standards?

Every REAL hunter knows that an automatic tranny is the ONLY way to go!
It allows one hand for your beer, one for a smoke (of whatever kind) or spotting scope etc. and steer with your knees while road hunting. The use of a standard reduces the effective use of one hand for shifting and one leg for the clutch. With the shifter on the floor it also makes you keep your rifle just that much farther form your hand, reducing the speed of your first 3 ranging shots with your semi!

Very valid point Kombi! This type of divisive subject plays perfectly into Windy's hands! We don't need this ever......

Why not hunt with a semi and why would/should I care what they hunt with?

Maybe it was inherited from someone, they got it for a good price or like the availabilty of a quick follow up shot if needed, or they are really good with it.

I wonder if semi users wonder why everyone else do not use them?

My current go to hunting rifle is an 18.5 inch barrel M14 in a sopmod stock.

Why?

The caliber can kill most big game in North America, The short barrel makes it easier to handle in the woods, and the collapsing stock allows me to shoot with a propper LOP no matter what clothing I am wearing. Throw on a 1-4x optic and you have a sweet package for hunting from 0-300m (I personally dont shoot on animals past 150-200 meterish depending on caliber, ie with the M1 carbine its 100m and under).

If the AR15 was non-restricted I would be hunting with an AR10. Greater ergonomics and its what I shoot best with. However this is canada so my AR's are restricted to the range.

Sorry but I havent experienced any stoppages with my serious semi-autos (3 AR15's, M14, CZ858, SKS, M1 Carbine) and I dont clean them until after several hundred rounds (more then most hunters put down range in their entire lives).

User error for:

A Buying a poor quality firearm.
B Improper maintenance+lubrication.

Bolt actions, pumps and lever actions can "jam" (doesnt that go on toast?) as well...and if It did happen I can clear a stoppage with a tap, rack, bang drill faster then most rednecks could load a second round into their boltgun, again another user problem.

And on the "lack of accuracy", the vast majority of gun owners can't shoot more accurately then their rifle anyways. Again another user problem.

Why are we blaming semi-autos for the actions of a few idiots? Thats no different then the antis blaming crime on guns.

Personally, hunt with what you like. The gun is only a tool.

I have a Rem Model 4 in .308Win and love this rifle. It is accurate and reliable, but only if I do my part in cleaning and maintenance.

Not all of them are bad, only the ones that aren't looked after.
