Why the hell do people hunt with semi auto rifles??

Seems like half the time somebody brings a gun into the store I work in, its a Remington 742 or 7400

jams, accuracy problems, etc etc

Lucky me on my day off I get to take a 7400 to the range and see why it won't shoot accurate. First off it was extremely fouled with copper and carbon. Got most of that out with WipeOut so now its range time to see if what it will do on paper.

I like Remingtons but not these things! :puke:

I think you will find that those who feel the need to dress up in cams and have a large blade strapped to their leg also find it De rigeur to also carry a bucket full of ammo and a semi, on the other hand if one should find oneself in very close proximity to one of your indigenous big hairy nasties, a bucket full of ammo and a reliable semi would seem rather comforting.

Yeah you guys are right lets get rid of all the revolvers, pumps etc. and hunt with single shots (why do you need a repeater bolt, one shot one kill right carlos.).Let me guess none of you dead eyes ever need a second shot blah, blah, blah.

We like diversity.:canadaFlag:
I like to see people using all sorts of rifles, all sorts of camo or non-camo clothes. I might feel like dressing one way or the other. Sure we all like the idea of a hunter dressed nice and with a good feather on his hat.... BUT ... for those who wish that to be the norm, be careful what you wish for. Because in those places, showing up with anything less than Filson would get you weird looks and immediate isolation. Same thing with the rifles. It will not only be the type action to use,,,,, but the brands as well. Savage... ha! Stevens.... they will not let you use it to prop the targets with it.
For those who have never hunted on the old continent, and think that this is the way to go.... look harder.
We don't need the snobism . :bsFlag:
As for the semis.... they have advantages too. Just because one reaches the point in life when he likes one thing and dislikes another, it doesn't mean that these views must be publicly enuciated as if they were a life's experince..... specially if it's todbartell. :D
Note. My semis never jam, and no, it's not an SKS :runaway:

I have many bolt action rifles but one year I took my semi-auto 742 Remington 30-06 out deer hunting and as usual killed a deer with one shot. Boring...

There are lots of guys out there that can, and do hunt properly with semi-autos. But I've met more than one with a spray and pray attitude.
Is that the guns fault?... or some fixation on the machine gun they really want?
Some semis shoot fine, and function well.
IMO, Remingtons generally do NOT fall into that catagory.

I can't believe toddlerbartell has got you guys going for 12 pages, and nobody has pointed out the obvious. The rifle in question is unreliable and inconvenient to clean simply because it was designed by the same folks who make the 710. It is often purchased by the same guys who think the 710 is a good design, and therefore never clean the rifle as they figure it isn't likely to last beyond the first box of ammo.

In spite of that, a real gunnut that goes the distance to maintain his firearms can have a reliable rifle with this platform.

The most reliable firearm I've ever owned was a 'rinco M305. No, I don't hunt with a semi, but it's not like there's anything wrong with that. :p

This is a long thread and I didn't take the time to read every post, so pardon me if I repeat other poster's thoughts.
The simplest answer to the question is... because we still can! And the more often hunters ask this question or show disgust at hunters who shoot with autos will only add fire the Lieberal wish of banning them.
Another obvious answer... many people want/need magnum performance but aren't overly happy with the recoil. Autos help a lot with this.
I personally owned a Remington 740... never any issues.
My friend has hunted for years with a 760... no issues there, either.
BARs are known as one of the most reliable firearms out there.
As a matter of fact, the new Benelli R1 is on my short list (so there :p).
Like an other firearm, it is up to the shooter. Keep it clean, operational and practice.

I shoot a REM 750 Carbine in .35 Whelen. I keep it clean and it has NEVER jammed. I hunt THICK brush and when I shoot a deer or moose I often fire more than one time fast. I often hit the animal more than once. Semis have their place and they do the job well. The 7400 and 750 series are good just keep them clean. The old 742's were well respected but I have yet to see one that doesn't have chatter marks in the receiver. I don't know of a more natural pointer than the Remmy semi auto family. (that includes the mod 8, 81 series) ' nuff said....

cheers Darryl

They sure are nice "pointers"...I just bought a model 740 in .30-06 recently. I'm looking forward to playing around with it soon.
