Why the hell do people hunt with semi auto rifles??

Funny?

I have a few semi's but my all time favorite is my old Winchester Model 100 in .308 . It became my favorite when it wore out about 15 years ago . Damn thing goes full auto everytime . I no longer hunt with it but every once in awhile i take it out to a remote place to see if it's healed itself . It hasn't so far but i'll give it some more time and keep checkin' back . It chucks brass pretty hard so i try to make sure that i'm leanin' far enough out the window so the brass doesn't slice the dash . The BAR in .300 mag is a fine rifle but like the Model 100 , you gotta shoot from the drivers side . Try shooting that out the passenger window from the drivers seat and the muzzle is still inside the cab . The blast is too much to do it more than 3 or 4 times . I was once going to buy a Remington 742 but for the same value i purchased a nice bow tie and a bowl of soup . Although i didn't have the 7400 long i got no gripe with the accuracy . As long as buddy didn't jerk the wheel i could nail mailboxes from 10 to 70 miles per hour with Creedence Clearwater Revival blasting on the 8 track . I don't much like tellin' other men how to shoot but some of ya's are in desperate need of a lesson so sharpen yer ears 'cause i'm only gonna teach it once . Remember the 60% rule . If ya can hit yer target 60% of the time at a given distance yer good to hunt at that distance . The best way to find this out is to head to a long , straight stretch of highway and count the paces to the signs . If ya kin hit a speedlimit , slippery when wet or a hidden intersection sign , 3 shots outta 5 at 350 yards yer good fer elk at that range . Beer cans in a fast flowin' river makes excellent movin' target practise . Don't ferget hip shootin' with a semi . When that whitetail busts outta the bushline there may be no time to aim so it's better to knock a leg off and finish him later than go home a failure . The real good thing about a semi is that ya can afford lots more ammo cause ya don't need scopes or even sights . Don't listen to the one shot one kill b.s. The important thing is to have an animal carcass across the hood of yer truck fer all to see , proving that yer a hunter and it don't matter how many times you shoot that critter as long as you get it . I don't want it to sound like brag but i've taken a few owls on the wing with my 10/22 , but i practse more than most . I dropped 3 deer one time with 3 shots from my H&K 91 and didn't even need the other 17 rounds in the mag . I don't mind sharing my expertise and being a role model as long as i've helped those who need it .

It might seem like a harmless matter posting this type of thing on the net. I post B.S. most of the time. But I would not want to be charged with any type of criminal offense and have this type of post floating around.

In my opinion, most people think gun owners are criminal in waiting. Shooters are seen as nuts, hoping to find a good reason to kill someone. Some judges share even stronger views.

Imagine trying to run a self-defense argument in court, if the Crown had access to this type of posting? Or imagine being charged for criminal negligence causing death, and this type of posting is brought into play. What do you think it would sound like to persons predisposed toward contempt for gun owners?

Courts are not receptive forums for humor, and you might find posts that contain admissions of criminal offences are not so funny after all.

It can’t happen, right? Imagine some criminal breaking into your home, and you are forced to unlimber iron. You are charged with second degree murder, and your computer is seized as a matter of course by an astute investigator.

Can’t happen?

You know, it's this type of complete paranoia that means you're letting the antis win.
It's one thing to avoid giving them opportunities for having a go at us but there are stacks of threads here on CGN that are tongue in cheek about shooting and those who contribute are usually fastidious about the safety they use are firearms.
Let's leave the Thought Police out of this, eh?

I have a 3006 742 rem its been very good to me never a jam .But I clean it often and tear down everytime . Dont get me wrong I love my bolts but here we party hunt and can get bonus tags for deer . So if two good bucks come out on the run , you have to shoot well and quickly . For me being able to shoot right or left handed its a great gun for runs . But always my ruger M77 on the watch . Just my opinion thanks .

hey todd, bar 300winmag.last year for the first time i needed a second shot.buck had a little brush tween him & me.normally one shot does it.oh my bud said the two shots sounded like 2 secs apart.heart shot at 275 yds.take a walk in my shoes, and then go smoke your pipe!

Seems like half the time somebody brings a gun into the store I work in, its a Remington 742 or 7400

jams, accuracy problems, etc etc

Lucky me on my day off I get to take a 7400 to the range and see why it won't shoot accurate. First off it was extremely fouled with copper and carbon. Got most of that out with WipeOut so now its range time to see if what it will do on paper.

I like Remingtons but not these things! :puke:

remington semiautos just suck but there are good ones out there, go with a browning safari or a merkel those are just as acurate as most bolt guns, i just dont use a semiauto and i wouldnt sugest one to a ameture hunter as it will give you bad shooting habbits

It's funny this topic would come up just after a reporter had an interview with Captain Carnage at his Spray and Pray Ranch located in Ontario Canada. He and his Carnage Cowboys like semi autos because venison is not the same unless it is shot full of adrenaline and bullets. The cowboys were gearing up for the first drive of the season and the reporter said all through the camp you could hear a chorus of:

Hounding, hounding, hounding,
Get them deer a bounding.
Keep them deer a moving Rawhide.
Get them moving shoot them up
Put a couple through their guts,
Keep them deer a bounding Rawhide.

:p

Methinks bad instruction, and lack of practice gives one bad habits.

I agree but it is proven when hunters know they can follow up with another shot, they will take shots that maybe would otherwise not, when you know you have to make your shot count you tend to take a better shot period.

True, and I have to admit I know some people like that. :D

You know Calum, I agree, but personally I know that I have the self discipline, to keep off that trigger, if a second shot is not required.....

But I have run into others in the distant past, that, even with a bubba'd up 10 shot Lee-Enfield, they try thier absolute hardest, to make it sound like a Bren gun while deer hunting.
And this is NO reflection on the firearm choice, just the fool behind the trigger.
I deplore and avoid persons of that tendency.

Sorry fellas, in actual fact, I should have quoted jcbruno.

Cheers....

Thats BS i know i have another shot so im not really gonna aim this one? yea the second shot on running big game will be no problem. this hole thread is BS how can you generalize the way someone hunts by the action of there rifle? OH he shoots a bolt so he must shoot every animal in the head with one shot or maybe he uses a lever so he really like other dudes NO your cant generalize like that. I use a 30-06 740 and it dosent jam really and i dont clean it every third shot either i wipe the out side down with gun oil at the end of the year like i do every year that my cleaning and guess what else ive shot several deer with one shot! really! if these semi's jam every shot why do they still make and SELL them?:runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway:

MORAL OF THE STORIE

you cant judge a book by its cover !
you've heard that befor right?

Some of us hunt ducks, etc. Usually tends to be more than one. When we push deer the blockers arent allowed one shot guns. To many deer, not enough bullets. Pump or Semi or go home!

Question: Why the hell do people hunt with semi auto rifles?

answer: Because we can.

limitations lead to registration lead to confiscation.
All semi rifles are just one step down from a machine gun and should be banned along with all semi-auto pistols.

.

The whole follow up shot theory is crap. So an auto loader is quicker to reload than a bolt or pump. Then we can ask why do people hunt with repeaters? Maybe we should all hunt with single shot rifles only? One shot one kill. The answer is the same, responsible hunters only shoot when the shot is good, but why not carry a repeater? There are times when a follow up shot is needed and prudent, the technology is there, so I think that is irrelevant what kind of repeater is used. An ethical hunter is just that regardless of what type of firearm he packs.

This kind of opinion shocks me when voiced by one of my peers. In my mind that is simply anti talk, with a bit of self protection thrown in (keep my bolt action and revolver) but never mind your choice of action.

Hhhmm, this attitude in my opinion Supercub, falls right into the hands of the anti gun crowd.

Ever hear of the saying,"Divide and conquer.":puke:

This train of thought will have us all hunting deer and such with a sharp stick and loincloths in a few years.

A few years ago in good ole USA, during the Assault Gun Ban, the BATF referred to long barrelled 357/44 calibre lever rifles as
"High capacity pistol calibre carbines."

True story...

i am not blaiming the rifle at all i think semiauto hunting rifles are fine and work well enough and the way you describe your hunting practices sounds like you are not a idiot behind a trigger,i ust think the best way to learn ethical hunting marksmanship is with a bolt gun and once one becomes a well viced shooter and chooses a semi auto fair play to him, i am sure there is the exception to the rule and some ethical shooters have learnd on a semi, no offece to you at all!
