Wondering what a Winchester lever 30-30 worth. I'm looking for one to pack around on my horse while checking cattle. What's an average gun worth?? Nothing fancy no scope just plain Jane and light easy to pack and in good condition

I don't need new as its gunna be on the horse and in a tractor bumped around just looking for a good solid "work horse" good shape and still shoots straight.

I like the Marlin 336 more than the Winchester 1894. It’s cheaper, just as good quality, and probably today’s most popular lever action rifle. It’s also not fun when the top eject that the 1894 has sends a hot shell down your shirt. The prices people are estimating are way off. Everyone thinks their guns are worth a fortune. I took a quick glance though FirearmsCanada and the average price for the 1894 was $1000 and the average price for a Marlin 336 was $500! Most of the marlin adds say “Fired 6 times then put it away and never used it again” These are both new prices on old used guns. If you do find an 1894 for sale for $200 it’s probably a piece of #### that’s barrel is so worn out it’s like a smooth bore shotgun. This one guy was selling a 1894 Ranger and I had to go take a look at it since he only wanted $200 for it. The front sight was off to the right, it didn't have a rear site, and to barrel looked like a gravel pit!

I thought that most Marlins are wore out after six rounds,so that seems true to form. From my experience anyway.

I'm hard on all of mine never a problem yet... I don't know I heard some of the more recent ones aren't as good but My newest one is from the early 2000's

any one of the "big three" should be considered- there's a lot of savage 99s in 300/303/308 in scabbards esp in the west- i've had a 99 in my scabbard for years- compared to these, your blr is a relative infant- personally, i like the more reach of the 99 in 308- and the 94 has been modified for angle eject for quite some time now

I've seen post '64 1894's in .30-30 and .32 Special, on local gun racks that were tight,... good bores, just the bluing well worn, a light touch of pitting here and there, and stock scratches and dings in $250 range.

Looked like something I'd to put to work riding in the scabbard at my knee.:canadaFlag:

An old 99 in 308 would look great in the scabbard, and give you a better caliber than the 30-30..

well, that's what the kokanee ranger carries, and if it's good enuff for him, etc- btw, with the 308, you can also take moose and elk, black bear, and sasquatch, if you're in the right place at the right time- but they're LOUSY eatin

If you are just looking for a plain post-64 one in good condition to use on horseback, hold out for one for like $350. They pop up on the EE every now and then. One just sold yesterday for around that. Pre-64s and ones in exceptional condition will run you up to $500.

Is the .308 a common caliber in those older models??

Not unless you buy an expensive box magazine Browning BDL lever action. A .308win wouldn't work in a lever action with a tube magazine. But if you’re talking about the Marlin .308 Express then yes you can find it chambered for that. It’s not the same as the .308win. For one, you can't use pointed bullets in a lever action because each bullet in the tube mag is touching a primer. If you had pointed bullets in a lever action and say you bumped into a tree or dropped it, you will set off the primers and blow up your gun. There is new Hornady LeveRevolution ammo you can buy that is a pointed rubber tip. They also have a much better Ballistics Coefficient than standard ammo. It sucks that I don't have my old Marlin 336 anymore. It’s cheap; I can just get another one. Now that I think of it, the new Mossberg 30-30 lever action rifle is $350 NEW!! It’s based off the Winchester 1894 30-30. I have no idea if it’s a good reliable gun though. Another reason why the .308win would not work in a tube magazine lever action rifle is because it’s not a rimmed cartridge.
