So the thread about the M70 vs the M700 stoked my interest in buying a new model Winchester M70 with CRF, chambered in the classic 270Win cartridge.

I suppose I'm not allowed to say exactly where I bought it, but I stumbled onto a shop in Manitoba, that had a Browning/Winchester promotion, $100 off.
Hey it was enough to cover shipping, and it was the lowest price I saw anywhere in Canada, for a new rifle.

Unboxed it 2 days ago. I just happened to have a Leupold M70A base, plus medium height Leupold rings, which I put on yesterday.

Today I aligned the rings, then lapped them. Darn near a perfect job, if I say so.

Mounted a sweet little Bushnell Elite 3200, 2-7x33 scope.
Perfect for hunting whitetails in the heavy cover.

I have already posted pics of the rifle on that other thread.
Indulge me a to share a few more?

Excellent rifle. I had one when I lived in Manitoba. And the chambering is really good too. I know it isn't your first rodeo, but the following combinations have worked very well for me:

RL22 and 130gr TTSX
H4350 or MRP with both 130 and 150gr Partitions
RL26 and 150gr Partitions

^ I've got a M700 Sendero in .270Win, 26"HB, so a different breed of cat from this M70, but I'm gonna check my load data from that, as a reference point.

I know my bullets were the excellent Nosler Accubonds 140gr. Pretty sure I was using H4831SC?

Edit: Yep, H4831SC, 59grs, avg mv 3015fps approx.

Too funny! I also have a VXIII 2.5-8x scope, had the internal debate as to which scope to go with.

Weird one maybe, but the 'Spidey Sense' said go with the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x33.

Note: The Elite 3200 is 2 ozs heavier that the VXIII.

Either way I think that range of magnification is perfect. I also loved a VXR in 1.25-6x30 with a red dot at the crosshairs.

Had a few 3200s and 4200s and they're good too.

The gloss VX-III would look nicer sitting on top of that rifle, but either one is a good pick. The 1.75/2/2.5 - 6/7/8 is my favorite magnification range, I just wish they had slightly longer tubes for long action rifles.

Too many guys mounting FFP telescopes that are ridiculously heavy on their hunting rifles these days. Maybe I'm a Fudd?

^ I'm a Fuddhead myself... (y)

Here's a (stupid?) question. The manual says the stock can be rubbed with 'quality lightweight gun oil' or furniture wax.

What about Boiled Linseed Oil?

Leave it alone so your hands wear witness marks into the finish.

Mine was gloss, mounted in some exquisite screwless rings I can't remember by who.

True confession: I intend to buy another rifle like the one I had, but I'm seriously going to have a gunsmith install iron sights on it, if I can find one to do the nice job in my lifetime.

I have one of those 2-7x33 Elites on a weird HVA Dahlberg 1600 in 6.5x55 with a 20" barrel.
Works good on that, but some limits of course.
Bush with shadows and limited light, glass is great, but ehh...can be a little tricky seeing horns at 100m even, so it comes out with the shorter range stands etc.
Little more magnification is never bad, 4-12x40 is on most of.my long actions, can always dial it down.
