Winchester M70 Featherweight

The gloss VX-III would look nicer sitting on top of that rifle, but either one is a good pick. The 1.75/2/2.5 - 6/7/8 is my favorite magnification range, I just wish they had slightly longer tubes for long action rifles.

Too many guys mounting FFP telescopes that are ridiculously heavy on their hunting rifles these days. Maybe I'm a Fudd?
Me too. The thing I don't care for about FFP is when you crank up the magnification the crosshairs get bigger.

FFP scopes increase the reticle in proportion to the target. It's super useful for LR precision shooting, and allows you to measure range easily on a known target.

I can't imagine one on a nice 70FW.

A M70 Featherweight chambered in 270 Winchester is hard to find fault with.

I can see by the evidence of preferred beverages and your choice of firearms that we would likely get along well.

What year did they start the "Classic" CRF rifles? Mine was terrific.
Wikipedia says it was '92 when they reintroduced the CRF models. I remember seeing them a bit later than that but I was still a whipper snapper then. In 1998 I bought one in 6.5x55mm but I think it was a previous years model. Loved it to death. Sold it off as a young man to fund a shiny little rock for my then-girlfriend.

Aside to the rifle, those photos remind me of a Ruger 77 I had, which took me hours to lap the rings true. They were gnarly, and Ruger uses pretty hard steel I think. Fit like a glove after, but was 10X worse than any other ones I owned.

It may have been 1.75x? Tube diameter objective, was a beauty on my Sako. Sold it around 2018?
It could have been 1.5-4X20 in the patrol model... they didn't make any VX-R's of 1.25 or 1.5X with a top end higher than 4.5X. The 1-6X24 and 1-8X24 scopes that are available these days from several manufactures are pretty handy scopes for most hunting scenarios.

Perfect hunting rifle... that will do pretty much everything . good job. I too, would have gone with the Leupold VX 2.5-8, the 3200 looks to be mounted very high... is that comfortable for you? I always try to get my scopes as low as possible.

Ya it seems to be, I've got a pretty fat head lol.
But ya, perfect cheek weld, scope lines up perfect, eye relief is ideal.

Edit to add comment: As to the scope, the Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x is pretty much my all-time fave scope. But I'm also a huge fan of those older Bushnell Elites, got a soft spot in my head for the 2-7x.
Don't worry, that VXIII 2.5-8x will find a home.

Looked it up, it was a 1.5-4x20 after all. The weird mag ratios I'm thinking of maybe were my SpectreDR or another scope.

Ordered my Stainless Classic CRF in 1992 but didn’t get it until 93, I’ve been bit ever since.

Can see why!

Just ended up with a 5 digit Stainless Classic sporter version in 30-06 to replace the 270. Couldn't stand to be without one for long.

So the thread about the M70 vs the M700 stoked my interest in buying a new model Winchester M70 with CRF, chambered in the classic 270Win cartridge.

I suppose I'm not allowed to say exactly where I bought it, but I stumbled onto a shop in Manitoba, that had a Browning/Winchester promotion, $100 off.
Hey it was enough to cover shipping, and it was the lowest price I saw anywhere in Canada, for a new rifle.

Unboxed it 2 days ago. I just happened to have a Leupold M70A base, plus medium height Leupold rings, which I put on yesterday.

Today I aligned the rings, then lapped them. Darn near a perfect job, if I say so.

Mounted a sweet little Bushnell Elite 3200, 2-7x33 scope.
Perfect for hunting whitetails in the heavy cover.

I have already posted pics of the rifle on that other thread.
Indulge me a to share a few more?

OMG, Don't you realize that what you have put together is one of those awful sniper rifles, the only purpose for which is to kill people at long range!!!! Seriously, hope your beautiful rifle/scope combination works s well as it looks. Love the wood/steel CRF Winchester rifles. I have a left handed one in 7mm Remington Magnum.

I have a question for the model 70 fans. Can you drop a round directly in the chamber and close the bolt on top or does it have to be fed from the magazine? Will the extractor just ride over the rim like a ruger 77 does? Or does it cause an issue?

I have a Model 70 Featherweight 30-06 that I inherited from my dad. Never shot and from the mid to late 1980S. Purchased in 1989. Anyone know anything about the accuracy of that production time?
I've owned a number of the post '64 'push feed' Model 70's. We're accurate enough for me.

Current favorite is a 'push feed' FW in 6.5x55mm.

NAA.

Yes, you can drop a round in and close the bolt.
