Winchester M70 Featherweight

Nope. Owned both, both excellent. Pick the one you like, then tell everyone it's a Mtn 700 😎
Fixed that for ya lol

*Edited*

I'm starting to want another Mtn or start actively look for a Model Seven. If I could find either in a bbl action this year, I’d be pretty happy.

Heh.

I loved my 700Mtn, and hated the Model Seven I had. I'm descended from Shire folk, but I found it too small all over.

Perfect hunting rifle... that will do pretty much everything . good job. I too, would have gone with the Leupold VX 2.5-8, the 3200 looks to be mounted very high... is that comfortable for you? I always try to get my scopes as low as possible.

So the thread about the M70 vs the M700 stoked my interest in buying a new model Winchester M70 with CRF, chambered in the classic 270Win cartridge.

I suppose I'm not allowed to say exactly where I bought it, but I stumbled onto a shop in Manitoba, that had a Browning/Winchester promotion, $100 off.
Hey it was enough to cover shipping, and it was the lowest price I saw anywhere in Canada, for a new rifle.

Unboxed it 2 days ago. I just happened to have a Leupold M70A base, plus medium height Leupold rings, which I put on yesterday.

Today I aligned the rings, then lapped them. Darn near a perfect job, if I say so.

Mounted a sweet little Bushnell Elite 3200 scope, 2-7x33 scope.
Perfect for hunting whitetails in the heavy cover.

I have already posted pics of the rifle on that other thread.
Indulge me a to share a few more?

Nice rifle and they shoot. Given our humidity rollercoaster here in AB I apply a couple coats of tung oil wherever there is bare wood on those nice walnut stocks to seal 'em up (under bottom metal, recoil pad and in the barrel/action channel). I use Howards on the outside finish and this has worked well over the years. I also use low or x low warne's or talley's on my M70's with no scope obj over 42mm. Gives me a good cheek weld. Happy shootin'!

I have a Model 70 Featherweight 30-06 that I inherited from my dad. Never shot and from the mid to late 1980S. Purchased in 1989. Anyone know anything about the accuracy of that production time?

Too funny! I also have a VXIII 2.5-8x scope, had the internal debate as to which scope to go with.

Weird one maybe, but the 'Spidey Sense' said go with the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x33.

Note: The Elite 3200 is 2 ozs heavier that the VXIII.
for me a veri x 111 / 3 it's a no brainer leupold every time

L MacLean Honestly, I've only ever had one rifle that wouldn't shoot 1.5MOA or better (much) with handloads. IIRC my 70 had a pretty long throat, but I don't remember the mfr date.

I try not to talk too much about the post-'64 push feed models so as to not drive their values up too much, but I currently have a .22-250 and a .30-06 that both shoot great. The .30-06 was the first new hunting rifle my dad ever bought (Canadian Tire closeout in the early '90s) and it's worn about a dozen scopes in a half dozen different mounts and sat in three different stocks. It is still my go-to. Last bear and moose both harvested with it. There is sentimental value for sure, but I've also been loading for it for 30 some years now so I've been able to find what it likes in the time. It's currently sitting in an HS Precision stock and waiting for a Trijicon Huron 3-9x40mm to arrive. When it's time to hunt, if I don't bring it along as my primary it's almost always in the truck anyways. Reliable as a crowbar.

I've also owned a .243 Winchester and a .270 Weatherby Mag in the past from this era. Fine shooters! They don't give up much if any to a modern rifle, especially if you aren't hung up on CRF. The bolt runs slicker as well. Wood not as fancy as the older ones but there are some gems out there.

Yours will very likely be a fine rifle. The lines of the Featherweight are just *chef's kiss*.
