Winchester M70 Featherweight

"47gr Varget/165gr good bullets loaded near the lands/neck sized OF brass."

Silverado what is the avg muzzle velocity with that load? Must be sizzling eh?
I'm going by memory, but I think about 2800 from a 24", and less for the 20" rifles I had, that was all MatchKings for target shooting. It's been a while... I can say that it was a great node for those guns, and it wasn't as hot as Norc 7.62, so...?

As always, a sensible guy like you knows how to keep your fingers and face safe from reloading adventures. Maybe that's not right, seems a little speedy, so I went and checked... it wasn't 47gr, it was 46.7gr. They were almost too long to feed from the mags, those Savages had really long throats. Lapua brass, CCi BR2 primers, and prepped etc.

Now I'll tell you the secret... the M70 Featherweight might be my favourite bolt gun, and they shoot 10% better in nice wood stocks. LOL

ETA: I'm somewhat scandalized by the matte rings, NGL.

Very nice rifle!

If it doesn't shoot to your liking, gonna have it floated and bedded?

^ We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I'd bet she's already factory bedded as the .270Win was.

But close range hunting., no hail Mary stuff, I may just live with whatever I get. It'll be 'minute of deer' regardless, if it's moa...

Hope its acceptable for ya as is! Wouldn't be the first one that shot well enough.

Quick inspection. This barrel is even tighter than the .270Win. Couldn't even start a piece of paper, so def not free floated, even though I still think these are supposed to be? Maybe it depends on who you talk to.

I did not take the action out of the stock. Funny thing, even though this wood is 'prettier' than the .270Win, I don't plan on going to a fiberglas stock with this one.

I mounted Leupold 2-pc base, again went with Leupold med ht rings. I lapped the rings. These took more work than the rings for the .270Win, just cuz I guess, but looked pretty decent when finished. Imo...

Mounted the sweetheart Leupold VariX-III 2.5-8x scope.

Then took a quick look at the firing pin and spring, I don't see any issues at first glance.

Edit to add: Oh ya, she tips the scales at 7lbs 8.8ozs, that's without 4 loaded rounds or a rifle sling, which would likely bring it to about 7lbs 12ozs, 7lbs 15ozs?

How is the action and all other aspects of your beauty of a rifle ?

^ I haven't taken the .308 to the range yet, but I plan on doing that tomorrow.

What I will say is that the .270, inspite of the firing spring/pin/light primer strikes issue, is the nicest action I've ever cycled. It's like glass.
So crisp. Trigger is great too.

I'm hoping this .308 has an action equal to the .270.

I'll update when I get actual trigger time and shooting results.

^ Now that's not bean field shooting type stuff, but close range in the timber it could work.

I'm going to hit the range tomorrow(?) hopefully and fire a group with a cold barrel.

Fwiw those shots avg mv = 2597.0 fps.

I reserve the right to tweak the load.

If you're going to get the barrel hot at the range anyway, might as well float that forend, I bet you have to remove very little to do it. Then you can fine tune if you want to add forend tension.

That's not bad for 250 yards though, plenty for a walkin' around rifle.

The factory bedding job on this stock doesn't seem to me to be as good as the .270Win. Maybe that's just me.

But definitely the trigger on the .308Win is much heavier, so I have to adjust it. Have to peel epoxy off adjustment screw first.

As to removing material on the foreend, what's the best? Sandpaper on a socket?

What about best way to reseal the wood after?
