I just ordered a new Model 71 Winchester in .348 Winchester and now have to wait a half a year or so for it to show up...hopefully before hunting season. I ordered some dies and brass off the EE yesterday so I'm anxious for that to arrive. Does anybody hunt with these rifles, still? Please post your Win71#### photos along with any great hunting photos with Model 71s please so I can fuel my desire while I wait for my boomstick to make it up here.

I have an older deluxe model I've been reloading for, shooting and 'playing' with. The plan is to get it some use here on Vancouver Island this year, possibly starting with spring Black Bear.

I had a standard model years ago and although it 'worked well',;) it was a little more than what's generally needed here on the island. It is my favorite lever gun/caliber combo and why I parted with that first one I still haven't figured out. Getting another was always on my agenda and when I saw this one at a gun show in Duncan, I had to have it. You don't see too many of the originals floating around and with the condition of this one, I thought I'd best grab it while the getting was good.
 
With the 348 WCF I've shot two island Deer, but as I've mentioned earlier, it's a little on the over kill side. The plans are for spring Bear this coming season and I have a couple boxes of 200gr Winchester Silvertip bullets I'm saving for that.

Probably the most commonly available bullets are the Hornady 200gr FP's, of which I have a good supply. Others I've picked up, but so far have only used for some paper punching, are the 220gr and 250gr Barnes originals.
 
Lets see those .348 ammo boxes too please. Does anyone know if Browning had their own label ammo out when they were offering the 71 remake ? I remember they had those gold and black ammo boxes but don't know if it was the same era, thx.

There's no such thing as over-kill!

Those Model 71's are sweet looking rifles, always liked them. :cool:

What I've settled on, so far;), with the Barnes 250gr Originals is 45.6gr of IMR 4064. With the Hornady 200gr FP, there are two loads I've been using lately, 53.4gr of IMR 4320 and 59.4gr of IMR 4350. As a guess, I'll probably go with the IMR 4350 load.

I have a couple boxes of the latest production stuff, 200gr Silvertips but H4831 was kind enough to pick up an old box of Winchester 250gr Silvertips for me. I got it primarily for photo ops but if I could pick up more, I'd save and use it for special hunts.

I mentioned earlier on, lucking out and getting a couple boxes of old 200gr Winchester Silvertip bullets. These are what I have in mind for use on spring Black Bear on the island this coming season.

:)Very nice!! Thanks for posting. I haven't done a photo of it yet but I also have an old box of 150gr Remington Kleanbore.

A friend locally who is into casting etc in a big way has supplied me with two cast bullets but admittedly, I havent done much with them yet. A 230gr GC and a 262gr GC.
 
Awesome photos! I can't believe that there aren't more people on this forum using 71s. Marlin should bring out their 1895 in .348 Win. I think it would be a seller.
