Hi all, first post. Thought I'd share....

Had a chance to shoot winchester Xpert 36gr HP against Federal Champion 36gr HP copper plated.

This all started when I inherited a Cooey 64B from my dad a few weeks prior and bought a new Savage Mark II B the other day. I bought the Winchesters first, when I received the Cooey. Experienced miss feeds and failed ejects. Figured it was the gun. Bought a box of Federal to go with the new savage. Cleaned both guns, did a thorough tear down of the Cooey and off plinking I went.

The teardown made a difference with the Cooey, could empty the 10 round clip on either ammo with the same reliability, the odd dud, the odd failed eject. Nothing as annoying as prior to the teardown.

The Savage bolt action absolutely HATED the winchester ammo. Failed to feed like crazy. Jam city. The Federals? Ate 'em up and wanted more. Going back out tomorrow to a friend's to mount a scope and fine tune it. Should be fun.

.22's of all makes, models and action types are like that. You have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifles will shoot best and, in the case of a semi-auto, cycle the action. The price of the ammo doesn't matter either.

I tried a couple boxes of winchester when I was testing a bunch of ammo. Had several misfires, undercharged rounds, loose bullets and other small defects. In addition to this I found it dirtier than federal as well. CCI Minimags shoot excelent for me, I just can't justify double the price of federal 510's (champion, lead round nose) or either of the american eagle flavors, which shoot just as accurately as far as I'm capable of telling. Plus I find the Federal to be the cleanest of the bunch. CCI isn't bad, but I find the wax/lube from the bullets eventually builds up in my magazine and action. This definitely isn't as bad from Federal ammo. For me its Federal .22 ammo all the way.

I use winchester Wildcat for long range and its very good for the price. but CCI(standard velocity 1070fps) one of the best, cost more but I love it

My 10/22 absolutely loves CCI.

Most reliable and well performing ammo in .22lr imo.

And good performance line with the stingers and velocitors too.

use blazer for cheap plinking ammo, by far the fewest FTF of any brand ive tried.

CCI is the best stuff made(from a value for your money type of place) , from the Blazer to the Minimag, it all feeds well, rarely misfires.
I have to say, I am less than impressed with the federal ammo. I have bought several types recently and in one box of 525 count federal value box, I had a jam every 3 rounds, about 60 duds, and a whole bunch of deformed or loose bullets. I tried it out in my S & W 422 pistol which shoots ANYTHING and isn't picky, but it H A T E D it, then my friends Sig mosquito had trouble shooting 2 in a row. We changed out the recoil spring right there to the softer one(it came with 2 springs, the stiffer is used with the Minimag ammo) and it was the same story. FTF, FTE, etc, etc, etc.
I always have NO trouble with the winny Dynopoints. They feed flawlessly in all my .22 rifles and pistols, and all my friends. I guess all makers of "value" priced .22 ammo have quality control stages they go through. As I have never gotten a bad box of 500 dynopoints in about 45 or so boxes. Cant say the same for the federal. But there are guys here with the exact same story, just with the brands reversed. So I guess we are taking a chance with quality control with each box we buy, and are playing "bullet bingo"

my 10/22 Loves federal 525rd bulk packs and CCI Stingers

My brno #5 loves the Win Dynapoints from Walmart.

Tried almost everything in my BRNO except match ammo, havent had a need to try anything other then the federals in my 10/22, maybe 1 FTE every box, and great performance on gophers.

my friend has a brick of winchester dynapoint ammo he said it was really cheap but it misfeeds in his cooey semi auto and jams in the chamber of his bolt action....we shot off 2 bricks of remmington thunderbolt and seemed fine in all guns with only the occasional misfire i wanna try to cheap winchester in my 597 SS as so far it will shoot anything i load into it....

My marlin 7000 loves federal bulk pack, but really doesn't like the winchesters, especially if its really cold out. my ruger eats CCI minimags almost exclusivly, but that's because the crappy hotlips magazine dosn't seem to like to feed anything else

I should share somthing about the Federal stuff. When we were in Saskatchewan, Triplam brought his chrony along. He set it up and we put some rounds through it. He used his BRNO, and I tried my CZ and my Savage MKII. The Federal ammo fired from all 3 rifles a little better than 1200 FPS, with such small amounts of variation, it's hardly worth mentioning. But if I recall, it was around 20 FPS or somthing. Than Tripalm fired some of the far more expensive, 'premium' CCI stuff that everyone raves about. Again if I recall, from shot to shot the velocity varied by 200 FPS! That say's it all right there. :)

My Beretta 89 pistol loves Winchester Dynapoints. It likes CCI Mini Mags and Standard Velocity. Hates all Remington, Federal, and CCI Green Tag and Pistol Match.

My 10/22 loves Dynapoints and Mini Mags. And hates Remington. Federal is fine.

My Rossi pump seems to like everything just about equally, though I prefer to use shorts so I can load more of them in the tube.

Back for more,

Took a chance this past sunday and bought a brick of winchester wildcat solid lead point. On visual observation, much smoother finish than the Xpert hollow points. Visited a friend and we proceeded to set targets up in the back yard at 25 yards, sighting the scope on the Savage 1" low at that distance. We'll see how good the guestimate works out when we go to the range next week.

Didn't bother with the Winchester Xperts and went right to the federals vs winchester wildcat. Hands down, the Savage preferred the Wildcats. Once things were set up, we could both tackdrive at 25 yards over and over and over, the federals had about a 3/4 inch group at that distance.

The old cooey 64 absolutely loved the Wildcats. No jams and no misfeeds on 40 rounds fired.
