Witch option for 3 GUN 1,2,3,or 4 ??

I leave my Witch at home when I shoot 3gun matches. *

please don't tell her I said that :D

I'm glad someone finally brought that up.

As far as the setup, you have a few pistols that will all work fine. The .45s will get costly to shoot though. The shotgun obviously will work just fine, but for the carbine, you really should consider getting an AR to be competitive. The manual of arms on your SKS will just slow you down and in the end you will find you don't have as much fund if you can't be competitive. A lot of ranges won't let you shoot the steel core anyways. The JR might be the better choice if you are allowed to run pistol caliber carbines, plus 10 round capacity. Leave the SKS at home. Plus all that magnification will slow you down trying to find your targets. You can get a nice Stag Arms or Core for 1k or a DPMS or Windam for like $800. Nobody say Norc.

Rim fire in competitions

I'm a member of an excellent club in Texas where I winter.

I shoot with a club in Corpus that runs unsanctioned matches every week. I think they have a great format.

Because they are unsanctioned, they have been able to put together a format that borrows from the other disciplines but focuses on the fun aspect without rules that can be annoying or difficult for some shooters. The safety rules are consistent with IDPA and USPSA but everything else is flexible. They use a modified scoring system that is easy to understand and administer but with a range of target types including plates. They have a huge number of props some of which are motion and radio controlled.

The biggest thing they do that makes their matches so attractive is to design most stages to be "rim fire friendly". So we have pistol, carbine and multigun matches that attract shooters with .22 carbines and pistols. It's common to have squads with a mix of center fire and rim fire handguns and long guns all shooting in total harmony. We get around 40 shooters every week from all skill levels including national championship guys. The beauty of the rim fire divisions is that we get a lot of people that couldn't afford high-end guns and $200 in ammo for a match. There are two of us that are still in there kicking at 70. The other guy is a top shooter in all categories and is nothing short of amazing. I'm the only Canadian and they treat me like a visiting dignitary.

These matches have divisions for rim fire and most of the time use the same course of fire as the centre fire shooters. Pistol shooters shoot the shotgun targets if they choose the "two gun" option. For those C'sOF that include longer range targets or those that won't fall from a .22 hit, separate and closer plates are set up for the rim fire people.

IMO this format is a good one for many reasons. I'd like to see matches set up like this in Canada.

#4 is "Heavy Metal" or Heavy Metal Irons" division in tge matches I shoot.
Except for the shotgun... so you'd be put in tac irons whether you like it or not.
You'll be shooting against guys with AR's.

Really though... unlike ipsc or idpa or other more regulated games "3-gun" can differ match to match.
As a shooter you should do some research BEFORE you go out and buy your gear...

Personally... For the matches I shoot none of the OP''s options are ones I'd go with.

Eta:... 3-Gun means Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle. I'm biased... Pistol cal. Carbines are not rifles.

Agreed on both counts. When you're running an SKS against guys with ARs and Beo mags you're not going to have as much fun, and pistol cal. rifles are a bit against the spirit of the thing IMHO

If you were shooting in Peace River only #3 and #4 would be "legal", even with our privateer rule set. We'd still let you shoot if #1 and #2 were all the gear you had, but you wouldn't be scored in with the rest.

I'd shoot #4 if there was a Heavy Metal division and #3 if not. If I didn't have spare mags for the SKS, I'd ditch the rail and scope and load it with chargers.

My 3 Gun choices are an AR-15 in .223, a 12 Ga tactical and my 1911 in .45. Having that much fun is almost immoral. My .22 options are only for Steel Challenge but I use 9mm there too and a .22 conversion in the AR.

I disagree. My level of fun has nothing to do with what other guys are shooting. But that is just me.

:agree:I'm with you Mr. Running. I'm generally happy with finishing in the top 2/3rds. I have rickety legs and am 70 years young so my priorities are different. I'm there to be safe, have fun and enjoy the fellowship. I've only just started checking my scores and frequently forget to. I'm really happy when I get through a match without a major screw up or brain freeze. No body can beat me the way I play the games. :ar15:

option 2 with a 1-4 scope on the rifle if your range is 50 yards or more. m14 is awesome btw but heavy same with sks.

With the informal 3-gun such as we have out here, I'd go with option #2 all day long. I know I've seen a few well trained guys use .22 rimfire for some of the stages, and don't care for it. Rather have a rimfire only stage run if they're gonna be run.

I didn't mean to imply that he souldn't or couldn't run the SKS. There is a guy who ran a 858 quite well when I was shooting with WRAS. He absolutely had a blast, just like everyone else. I just find having a handicap from the beginning frustrating.

If I came across as a negative nancy, I apologize. Shoot what you brung, and you'll love it. As my sig line says, this game is the most addictive thing out there.

As I implied in my post #22, one of the biggest and best things we can do for the shooting sports is to be as all inclusive as possible. We need the younger people and we need the people who have limited funds.

In the five or six years I've been shooting in Texas I've never seen the diversity do anything but enhance the pleasure in the matches for all the shooters. We have people who bring their revolvers and others that like to shoot their WWI WWII long guns. So duffers like me never feel out of place and IMO that should be a goal for all clubs. Those who are very competitive don't lose out so some of the shooters at our matches are awesome and great examples for those who want to get better. Jerry Miculek actually shot at one of our matches in 2012 and was just one of the guys. Needless to say he won his division!

I understand the limitations of running sanctioned matches and we don't want to lose the advantages of running the best of them. However the fun matches do a lot for the sports too.

Do the 3gun rules have a "box" for the pistol like they do in IPSC?
If so then the mag in the 1911 would be a no go.

There are a number of three gun organizations. I'm a member of 3Gun Nation in the US and I do know that there are magazine length limits. However the 1911 and 2011 are definitely in use. If fact STI just introed the Marauder which is a 2011 designed for the three gun market. It is offered with a 140mm mag and a capacity of 20+1

Obviously Canadian IPSC rules will be different so I'm sure someone will speak up soon here.

3 gun is the best ever so fun, especially on steel where you can hear your hits and 200 to 300 yard rifle stage, so fun.

Longest shot I recall having to make was 450yrds on a steel ipsc metric sized target... This after a little running and crouching to engage other targets...
Climbed up onto the shooting platform took aim and fired...
Thinking I'd missed I squeezed off a second "hail Mary" shot just as the RO called "HIT" on my first shot. ..
Hesitated for second before moving on thinking....
WTF..? I hit that..?

I'd like to think it was my mad skilz that helped me make the shot, but... I think dumb luck had more to do with it.

Rocky Mountain had a bonus shot with a Barrett Mrad in 338 LM that was 3/4 of a mile and 600 yard shot at an ipsc target sized plate. Montana 3g match pushes 550 yards once in a while as well. The Dallas match had a 16 " plate at 550 yards last year - one of two plates I missed all last year.

So cool hitting the long ones. Especially the beyond 400 yard plates.
