Just an update,

I am off to see Ron Smith this weekend about a barrel, likely will finish it at 26", and it will be chambered in 6.5-06

Now, i am stuck on contour. Should I do a standard sporter (#3 contour) or should i step up to a #4 and have it fluted.

Oh, this barrel will end up screwed onto a Rem 700 bdl action.
 
.243 is a sensible round for what you're going to do. For something with more speed and energy, the .257 Weatherby has always facinated me with it's blazing speed and relatively low recoil for the power it generates. If you like the more exotic stuff, heck anything will do.
 
I have yet to see a antelope take a step after being hit with my .25-06 so I will recomend that one. I also bought the rifle from a fellow that bought it new in 1976 it was his wolf gun. but if you want to go custom I have always said to myself when it comes time to rebarrel I will likely try the 6.5-06
 
6.5/06 very intresting. Show some pics when it is done. Think i got to do some more homework this sounds intresting. Think that will work well for what you are planning to use it for.
 
Met with Ron Smith this afternoon, he has my cash and an order for a # 3 contour .264 bore barrel

I opted out of the fluting when he told me "The only thing I like about fluting is the $160 I charge to do it":D

I know Ron doesn't care for flutes. But the customer is always right! I should have had you ask about my 8mm gibbs, it's been there almost a year now. It's not getting flutes either.:p

Cool. What kind of stock are you going to use?
 
I have a .25 Gibbs on a Rem Action with a Smith Barrel that was built by Ron Propp. It launches 90 gr bullets at 3780 fps. I use it for predators and deer.
 
Do you have specific bullet weight & speed you want to use? What is the twist rate going to be? Are going to use one of Ron's gain twist barrels?....

I would go with the blueprinted 7mm-08.

I will have a 6.5-300RCM ready for spring testing. Rem 700 LA Magnum with clip, Bell & Carlson Medalist, 26" Kreiger with 5R rifling and throated for 140 VLD. Hoping to get 3200fps with 60-62 grains Retumbo. This is a slightly souped up version of the 6.5 Rem Mag, in long action, or a souped up 6.5-06. I chose the 300 RCM case over the WSM case as it will get better velocity and less pressure with about 8 grains less powder. The 300 RCM brass is great and comes without belt.

I will have the first 6.5-300 RCM that I know of. Barrel should be here in a couple of weeks.
 
25-06 would be my first choice by a large margin, or .257 weatherby if you want something a bit more exotic. Use whatever rifle/action turns you on, but barrel should be minimum 26" barrel to make these cartridges perform as they should.

6.5-06 is mighty near the same thing performance-wise as the 25-06 i would have selected, so it's hard to find any fault with it. Should work fine.

Neither 25-06 or 6.5-06 seems terribly exotic to me, but i learned long ago never question another man's taste in dogs, guns, or women. ;)
