Hey guys I know very little about black rifles. Shot a handful of them and I'd like to get my own.

What is the civillian or canadian version of the hk 416? Or what would you guys suggest as a good semi auto rifle?

I will probably only ever get one. I say that now but it probably won't happen haha. Take me to school gents.

Go to "tactical imports" and order the MR223 in 14.5. Best AR if you are only going to own one. Get it Ral 8000 that's there dark and light brown colors. If you are going to add accessories like lights/laser Optics and a NVG setup then go light on weight

They are very nice rifles in both 223 or 308. They are piston driven and heavier than comparables.

HK has a keymod model "CR" that should be a bit lighter. Follow Irunguns to their USA site to have a look.

First gen lowers aren't compatable with a standard AR upper/lower pushpin locations so keep that in mind with used stuff.

KAC......not sold on pistons and AR's

Agreed. Your money is better spent with a KAC. They are light, very well balanced and extremely smooth shooting. Other ar15's feel awkward to handle when you are used to the KAC. Quality parts and features, and upgrades from a standard ar15 that increases reliability. I love my KAC, wouldn't trade it for anything.

With the HK you get a heavier gun, less features, etc. for more $$$.

HK make great guns. They cost more, and are heavier, than DI AR's, replacement parts are hard to find and expensive.
Also, the most commonly found HK exports have been bastardized to comply with retarded German laws, and come with heavy match and non-chromed barrels. Not my cup of tea, but to each his own.
If you have a budget that allows it, I would strongly urge you to look at KAC AR's, both in 5.56 and .308.

You don't need a chrome lined barrel on HK steel. Sorry but that argument is so stupid and repeated all the time.
He said he was only going to buy one rifle HK will outlast them all in all categories. In his criteria HK wins by a long shot.

For the $4000 you'd spend on a bare HK rifle you can buy a Colt Canada C8 (SA 15.7) carbine, sling, optic, spare mags and a Dillon reloading press. People gripe about the cost of an SA 15.7, but apparently an HK at twice the cost is OK?

Gentlemen he never stipulated price in his criteria.

If you want that gun that dominated SF world for the past 10 years since it's inception and was used to kill UBL. Get the MR 223 or get the mil version for a lot more that is the same.

If I drove a Maybach, had tailored Hugo Boss outfits, carried Porsche Design fountain pens and had a hot German wife ( wait, that I do have!), I would buy an HK rifle. But I don't ( except for the wife part) so I'll keep dreaming.
Seriously, OP, unless you are looking for a very nice conversation piece, there are a lot of very good ARs out there for waaay less!

"gun that dominated SF world for the past 10 years" Unless you're Canadian, Danish or British, then you can get the aforementioned SA 15.7 for literally half the cost. Truthfully as many SF units use Norc CQ's as HK 416's
