Wow some of you are truly f**ked, I don't give a crap how you rationalize it, killing strays is wrong, I'm not talking about feral dogs here, strays deserve a bit more respect. For anyone here who doesn't like dogs wow I truly feel sad for you, and there really has to be something missing mentally if you actually look forward to something like this. Mans best friend is exactly that, we should treat them as we would another human being, period. I have no doubt that some of you wouldn't mind shooting a "stray" human so I doubt you will understand anything I'm trying to say here, I just hope that when the shoe is on the other foot a pet will show you the love you obviously never got as a child.
Nobody loves their dog more than I do, but a few years ago Shadow did run off, and I saw him standing on the road, watching a little girl take food out to a string of puppies that we behind her house. I could see his whole demeanor change, and I said "Oh no you don't, not in front of that little kid!" I smoked him with the truck and drove him right into a snowdrift. He wasn't hurt but he got into the truck pretty meekly and was my pal again right away, but he was dangerous the minute before.

I don't know - you need to clarify something. Do you mean stray dogs as in owner negligence? Or do you mean feral dogs? I have no issues culling feral dogs in the country but I would not shoot a stray dog unless it was threatening me. Unfortunately some owners are not very responsible and whacking someone's dog is not cool.
Thats effed up!! maybe it's time to see a shrink!!!
I've been in exactly that situation. I shot the neighbours dogs (2) when they were chasing sheep on my sisters farm. They had been warned several times. We even had pics of them chasing sheep, to no avail.A dog can completly change its habits depending on the situation. A case in point happened many years back in southern Alberta where a sheep farmer was having quite a few animals taken by a pack of dogs. It was assumed that they were wild but one day the farmer got a good look at the pack and recognized a couple of her neighbours dogs in the bunch.
She knew these dogs and was pretty shocked but went to the owners to get them to keep their dogs locked up. They did believe that the lovable family pet was doing such things and told her to screw off. The fact of the matter was that no one was home during the day at a lot of acerages and farms in the area and all the bored loose dogs would pack up and kill sheep.
Was quite the stink when she finally got fed up and had a bunch of the dogs shot on her property while in the act of chasing sheep. In the end on one could touch her though as she was well within her rights.
Rover might be living a double life. Doesn't have to be feral to be dangerous. I wouldn't just shoot every stray on sight but it wouldn't take much trouble from one before I put one down either.
Boomer,Ya you're right, it would have been better to let him kill those puppies and maybe tear up the little girl if she tried to stop him. I don't think so.
Dogs live in the moment, and they don't understand concepts of right and wrong in human terms. This is why responsible dog owners keep their dogs under control. Shadow was a great dog, good company, a good bear dog, and he pulled my butt out of trouble on several occasions. But he would kill small animals at every opportunity, and nothing I did would deter him. Well hitting him with the truck deterred him, but it simply redirected his attention for the moment and did not change the behavior. This should not be construed that I condone the mistreatment of any animal, I loath those who intentionally inflict cruelty on animals. But at the time this incident took place I had seconds to prevent a blood bath with serious legal and emotional consequences.
