I wish they would cull some of the friggin cows wandering the highway on that Indian Reserve about 40 km south of you! Somebody's going to get killed eventually, on one of those hairpin turns, in the dark. Just imagine running into one of those things on a motorcycle.

I found pics of my Grampa's old Cockshutt loader full of St. Bernard, four or five of them IIRC. And another picture of his poor little yearling heifer standing in the corral covered in blood missing one whole ear and most of the other. Not cool, and no I'm not posting the pics....... his pick of rifle, his Enfield, likely for the 10 shot mag and even more likely because his only other option was a Cooey 60.

Around home it doesn't have to be calving season for a group of dogs to be big trouble, the neighbors Rottweilers cornered up a bunch of our stock and chewed the heck out of them and yet the neighbor is mad when one of the dogs doesn't come back home. Alot of folk come out there from the city and think the dogs have free run of the place. They are all in for a suprise.

I have caught mutts running game in season and generally speaking they run home real fast when a shell is fired into the bank well behind them. Even Corgies and those stupid poodles run the deer up there. I hope they get a taste of hoof.
 
Seen a few deer that have been killed by dogs and it was not a pretty sight. No sympathy from myself, but obviously the problem should have been addressed before it became one.
 
Interesting thread! Especially since we just had another mauling in Northern Sask at a reserve. First I am a dog owner - two chocolate labs. They are never out of the yard unless my wife and/or I are with them. Since I bird hunt with them I spend a lot of time training and walking them. Second, I have not yet observed dogs running wild in the farmlands here in Whitetail Country! Third, in the late 70's I was stationed in Germany with the Cdn Army and while there I took the German hunting course and obtained my German Jagdshein (sp?) - Hunting License. I had a bit of difficulty with one section of the laws there.

Any cat more than 100 meters from a dwelling was considered feral and shall be shot. Collar or not it SHALL be shot. No problem with that one. Any dog more than 200 meters from a dwelling and not obviously under the control of anyone was considered feral and SHALL be shot. That was a tough one to take. In three years there I shot and saw shot more than two dozen cats and, fortunately, no dogs.

I agree with neutering dogs (mine became it's when they were six months) as population control. I also agree irresponsible owners cause a lot of the issues. If it were possible to identify the owner of an at-large dog that owner should be held reponsible for any damage or expense incurred by said dog including the cost of the bullet and the gas that ended it's roaming. I recall two family dogs we had in the late 50's in the Yukon. They were accidently let out of the kennel by yours truly and disappeared. The local Game Warden saw them about fifty miles from home a few days later and reported it to my Dad. Dad said shoot them on sight and about three days later the local Mountie reported they had been destroyed. Of course, I had my britches warmed for letting them get out but shooting them was the right thing to do.

Bottom line - if dogs are at large we should be employing the German thinking except maybe give a slightly greater distance from a dwelling - say three hundred meters!! Food for thought!!

I would first try and rescue the dogs that you could , then ban the people on the reserve from having dogs ever again and if I was attacked by a dog I would agree with killing it as a matter of self defense .

just going in and shooting dogs because a bunch of people were too lazy to spay and neuter their pets is just wrong .... gotta fix the problem where it starts from ... the people responsible for the dogs.

x2. Never had any use for them since my Mother's pet sled dog attacked her and broke her hand. I don't understand why folks get all emotional about shooting stray dogs. They are worse than wolves or coyotes, because they have no fear of people. They kill deer, cats, other, smaller dogs, and won't hesitate to attack children. At least feral cats will keep the mice out of your barn and fields, but feral dogs are totally useless. Yet people will blast a feral cat, and let a pack of dogs run wild. :confused:
 
In one case on a reserve on the coast north of here they pulled a ##### in heat behind a truck until a lot of the strays gathered. I think the Naps officer used his service pistol.

I personally would not feel comfortable dispatching strays. If they harrass livestock than there is no question.
 
I think this is the perfect application for a scoped .243. I like dogs, but a feral dog is a dangerous dog. While I might feel sorry for a dog that is in my cross hairs, that won't prevent me from pressing the trigger. Pets are property, and you must be responsible for your property. If you allow your property to run loose, and it becomes dangerous to a neighbor or to the public, it might not come home.
 
Wow some of you are truly ####ed, I don't give a crap how you rationalize it, killing strays is wrong, I'm not talking about feral dogs here, strays deserve a bit more respect. For anyone here who doesn't like dogs wow I truly feel sad for you, and there really has to be something missing mentally if you actually look forward to something like this. Mans best friend is exactly that, we should treat them as we would another human being, period. I have no doubt that some of you wouldn't mind shooting a "stray" human so I doubt you will understand anything I'm trying to say here, I just hope that when the shoe is on the other foot a pet will show you the love you obviously never got as a child.

I'm in the same boat as you. I agree that these dogs can't be rescued and rehabilitated like someone else suggested above. They are a problem just the same as yotes. I'd have a hard time dropping the hammer on one though I know they must be dealt with.

For those participating in the cull there's a great restaurant up the street from me that may give you money for your downed doggies.

strays, feral they need to be disposed of. I grew up on a farm and the rules out there at that time were that if my dog was on your property you had the right to shoot it cause it was no good to me off my property. If you were feeling generous, give the critter a good beating and send it on its way, comes back again bang!
I do not enjoy the job of killing dogs, but after they become feral they cannot be rehabed, just like raising a coyote pup. Sooner or later it will go wild on you.
