Guys I need some help / explanation, bear in mind I’m a noobie when It comes to most firearms. I’m a left handed shooter, my only firearm up to now was a left handed 870 express. I should be receiving my mcr any day now, I know the safety is ambi but saw the charging handle?? Is left side only, I’m trying to determine if this is a problem for me. What is the charging handles function, I’m thinking it engages the action?
There are 4 uses for the charging handle:
1. To remove a round from the chamber
2. To load a round into the chamber
3. To clear a stoppage
4. To show the rifle is empty
The best way for you to think of this is that the cocking handle does all the work that the pump of your 870 did except for when firing as the semi-automatic function of your rifle does the pumping for you.
1. If you have a round in the chamber that you wish to remove (A dud for example) you can pull rearward on the cocking handle to move the bolt to the rear, during which the round should be extracted and then ejected. If you have a magazine in the rifle and you want to keep shooting you can then let go of the bolt and it will go forward picking up a new round.
2. When you place a loaded magazine into the rifle if you don't have a bolt release catch there are two possible ways to use it
- A: If the bolt is already locked to the rear you can pull rearward on the cocking handle and then release it. The bolt with the cocking handle will move forward, pick up a round and then you can fire away
- B: If the bolt is fully forward you can pull rearward on the cocking handle all the way to the rear and then release it. The bolt with the cocking handle will move forward, pick up a round and then you can fire away
3. If you have a stoppage, say a case hasn't ejected properly you can remove the magazine, pull the handle fully to the rear and engage the bolt hold open (It's in the magazine well). The Bolt will be kept rearward leaving you free to remove anything unwanted from the chamber area. Other types of stoppages exist, your use of the cocking handle for those will vary.
4. If you are done shooting and you want to show that your rifle is unloaded you can remove the magazine, pull the handle fully to the rear which will extract and eject any round from the chamber and engage the bolt hold open (It's in the magazine well). The Bolt will be kept rearward leaving you free to inspect the chamber area and confirm it is clear. You can then put in a safety flag or store your rifle appropriately
I hope this helps
