WSS salesman.......

PowderBurner: I guess a kid should know everything about guns before applying for a job at a gunstore.

You would think it would be a pre-requisite. My issue was not wit the kid behind the counter, It was the know it all wiseass salesman.

You tell the customer the positive and negative points about the product. You dont tell them the product they currently own is inferior to todays standards.

C = CLIP?

Even Savage doesn't know the difference between a magazine and a clip?

For the amount of help this guy was, I may as well have bought it from a catalouge.

I promptly left and shook my head. Does this sort of thing happen all day at your local wholesale sports?

Most big or big-box retail is teh suck. I'm used to it.
Little floor help when you need it. Product knowledge is lacking.
Having ample Staff cuts into profit and why should they know anything about what they sell... They just want you to buy it

I wonder who decided to teach Canadian shooters that the term "clip" is improper. It just makes us look stupid and immature - like a kid coming home from school and telling his Dad that it isn't a "tree" - it is a "vegetation."

It was a clip before we were born and will be a clip after we have stopped trying to re-educate everyone and gone to our grave.

The term "magazine" is more of a generality - could be a tube or a box or even a larger storage place for arms or ammo or powder.

The term "clip" is more specific - for instance my rifle has a "tubular magazine" or a "clip magazine."

For examples of usage of these terms, read the little descriptions of each firearm in your SIR catalogue. The manufacturers ( who I hope have some knowledge of terms and have been talking guns for some time now) write the little descriptions for the catalogues.

If you ever want solid advice on a certain product you are obviously at the wrong gun store. Check out P&D, they have real salesman overthere & are quite knowledgable.

I'm sure we all go to WSS for their lower prices but there is a reason for this & I am not talking about the Wholesale quantity they buy for us to get a deal.

I had to go in to WSS today because or Department has our duty boots bought from there, and I was picking up new issue. While I was waiting, I grabbed a number from the gun counter and waited the usual 35 minutes before someone called my number.
I wanted to look at one pistol I could just make out behind the glass, saw it looked like a 1911A1, so I asked if I could see it. The clerk pulled it out and began to hand it to me, when I saw it was a Norinco. I said, "oh sorry, I was looking for an original USGI, not a Norinco". The clerk said "oh well then, you better go to the literature and fantasy section if you want an original....they don't exist anymore". His demeanor and tone was very condescending. I told him I have 4 original USGI .45s at home, so I know damn well they exist.
I can put up with the poor service, long lines, out of stock items, ect....but blatantly rude and obnoxious I throw right back. Small potatoes really, and I can take it from a young punk, but a grown man treating people like sh*t does nothing for their business, or for our hobby.
These are the same guys who tried to screw me out of a rifle I put money down on years ago, after one of the store "clowns" wanted it for himself.

I rarely expect anyone at the big shops to know a whole lot. Most are paid a #### wage, and how about those benfits??:)

I expect at the Car dealership there are huys trying to push a new car on you, and I suspectthere are new guys that don't know the in's and outs of all the carss they sell, all the cars people own, etc etc etc.

They make their sales pitch and based on their knowledge ability, either sell or don't sell.

If I go to a gunshop to buy a Stevens 200, I could crae less who sells it to me. Same with a Marlin lecer, etc etc. No one behind the counter is gonna "sell" me on a common gun of common calibre, I'll just buy it and porbably know as much they do about it.

If I want to go chat about reloading for my .35Whelan or what type of bullets to put down the .505, I'll probably ask fosomeone with experience.

It's just a job to a lot of the counterstaff.

Just as I don't expect the staff at KFC to know where their potatoes come from, what breed chicken they cook etc etc. I however do expect they'll try and sell me on whatever gimmiks they can, like the extra crispy and so on.

As long as I know what I want, and they can sell it to me, there isn't much issue.

I can't stand however the guys that go to the gunshop for half the day, buy nothing, and watch to see what guns people are looking at so they can inject their oppinions.

The reality is that most people use the word "clip" 'cause it sounds cool.... the term "magazine" is too pretentious..... :p

Have you ever been to Milarms? :)

WSS is where all the Brick salesmen go after being fired for being the lowest in sales that month. The people in the Calgary store are clueless clods and 1 hr waits with $1000 in hand to spend are the norm.I'd shop anywhere else if possible.Just from my experiences..........PI$$ POOR SERVICE!!!!Harold

Hmm...didn't I see you behind the Edmonton WSS gun counter last week ? Interesting...

at least the store in calgary has a take a number system the store in saskatoon has nothing of the sort and if your a young fella like myself good like even trying to hand over your money within an hour

Just had a less than impressive experience with WSS Calgary ordering something online/by phone. It got so silly it would take far too long to write it out. Pretty amazing actually.

Having said that, general customer service is one thing but do we really expect people to be experts in any field let alone give a damn when they are paid as little as possible and typically not treated so well by their superiors/employers? Really? I think its more a reflection of how stupid our entire society has become. We all want some 17 year old kid to be a gun expert, have all the right answers and have it all RIGHT NOW. I'd give you a 'screw off d**k' attitude as well. Can you blame em?

I get paid well to do what I do and I'm very much an expert in my field but if my various employers were paying me min. wage, had totally unrealistic expectations and acting like a-holes I'd carry a "whatever" attitude as well. Wait.... now that I think about it the last two points are true!! I quit...

I was in there last night (WSS Calgary). Gong show as usual.

Took a number, waited patiently for 50 minutes to get 1lb of H380 powder.

One salesperson spent the whole time talking to 2 guys who were window shopping for guns. In the end, the sales guy convinced them to buy only to find out neither of them had an FAC/PAL.

One saleperson was dealing with a customer who was also browsing. The guy was flipping through a catalog (Browning I think it was). Every page he saw something he liked and wanted to see. Must have had a stack of 30 different guns next to the counter when he was done. The guy was obviously not looking for anything particular. He had the sales person bring out bolt action rifles, shotguns, lever guns, etc. Then he left and said...I'll have to think about it.

The guy who was standing beside me was trying to buy a new x-bolt and a new leupold scope. Him and his buddy were both super excited to get out and try the new rifle. Turns out they didnt have any sort of scoupe mounting system for him and they didnt go out of their way to maybe call Russel sports for him to see if they had mounts. The option given to the customer was to maybe wait 3 to 4 weeks for something to come in. He was clearly disappointed and said that hunting season would be over by then. I gave him directions to Russel sports and he left to make his purchase everywhere.

Sometimes service is bad due to idiot staff and other times I dont think its the sales peoples fault but rather the customers they were having to deal with.

Maybe as a suggestion, they could have someone behind the counter who just deals with writing up the bills, dealing with the gun transfers, fetching ammo from the shelf for people or retreiving easy things like powder, bullets, primers, etc from the back. Certainly any of the new staff can hand over a box of ammo or use the till to finish the sale which would leave the few knowledgable gun people to deal with customers who actually require that type of help.
