So I stopped by the store friday night. A customer was looking at a stevens and was asking the salesman about it. the kid didnt seem to know much, and I gave him a few highlights about them. ( you know how long it can take to get any help at the counter, so I figured I would help out a little) the customer appreciated the comments and said thanks. a little strange but whatever.

I just needed a chance to hold the savage american classic.(30-06, jewelled bolt and pretty ###y looking by the way) As I was commenting and looking at it, the sales man who let me handle the gun started asking me a few questions.

- what do you have now? I replied a savage model 110c in 30-06, made in the early 80's. ( just one of the few savages I own...)

- He replied, I dont know much about the 110 it sounds familiar what does the C stand for? I replied CLIP.

-salesman replied: oh okay, I wasnt sure. You know, these ones are a lot better than the ones made back in the 80's.

figuring this was his sales pitch I let him ramble on about why it was better than my OLD rifle.(sleeker look, accutrigger, locking lugs, yadda yadda)This was damn near an insult/lecture for owning an older rifle!!

When he was finished I replied: Well I bought my 30-06 110C series J, from an old trapper. He shot quite a few animals with it. I myself have downed a lot of game with it as well.

For the amount of help this guy was, I may as well have bought it from a catalouge.

- Just another reason to support your local gunshop..

I promptly left and shook my head. Does this sort of thing happen all day at your local wholesale sports?

I was at WSS in Calgary today...and...YES it happens all the time.

When I go into the store, I already know what I want. Spend the time to do the investigation before you go into the store. The only thing I need the sales people for is to pass me a gun if I want to handle it, or to grab something from the back I cant get by myself.

WSS even has all their reloading dies in back. Today was my 3rd trip to the store to get a set of RCBS 22-250 dies. Love waiting in line to hear "we dont have those". If they were on the shelf, I wouldnt have to take a number, wait in line and then wait for someone to try to find them. I could go to the shelf, look, see they arent there, then leave.

WSS in calgary is pretty bad.
The only good ones are the old men who have no time for anybody. They make me laugh.
Then there are a couple of young guys who are too cool for school.
And then there are some clueless people who have no idea how to help at all.

The really big thing that annoys me is that WSS in calgary is such a big store, yet they have NO guns i look for in stock.

Yah I think we all have a story from WSS about issues like this. They have some staff that are knowledgeable but they also have some that are right clueless.... I have pointed this fact out to the manager time and time again. Some times its as bad as the lazy bugger not going into the back to check for powder if they have it in stock or not. In some way I understand why it happens because I'm sure as #### most of us on know a great deal about firearms but do any of us want to go to work for 15 dollars a hour and have to work evening and weekends? So I guess next time you go in there just be thankful some poor person is even behind the counter to hand you the gun. Sorry to put a spin on it this way but it could be WAY worse..... The person behind the counter could have no idea how to speak english. Now wouldn't that make your trip to WSS that much worse. Anyway just my 2 cents on it.

Having never dealt with WSS staff on a face to face basis, I really can't comment on the knowledge of the people behind the counter, however in my mail-order dealings I'm quite satisfied.
During the course of my most recent purchase ( rifle) I casually mentioned that a competitor had the same rifle on sale a bit cheaper.
I was put on hold and the salesperson came back and offered the rifle for the same price as their competition....I readily accepted !
My only complaint although minor is when something small is purchased quite often it is sent in a gigantic package resulting in a ridiculous postal charge.
Aside from that, all purchases have been filled correctly and shipped promptly...

Winnipeg WSS store has great sales people. If they don't know, they will often grab someone who does. They all seem to be hunting and shooting enthusiasts and I see many of them at the ranges.

You find out in a real hurry which counter staff are knowledgeable, and who are the 'tards that you merely task to retreive you ammo or reloadin' stuff from a shelf.
