I shot quite a few elk with a .358 Winchester and 200 grain silver tips, then a few with the 30-06 and 165 nosler partitions, one with 375 ruger and the last few years I used a Sauer 202 in 9.3x62 and 286 gr. norma Oryx bullets. All of them worked fine, shot placement is the key. Although, I do like the 9.3 because of it's mild recoil. Also, there is always an exit wound and so a better blood trail.

Will the 7-08 be a short barrel ? If so what length ? I could never afford a Kimber or Howa . Maybe a Remington, Tikka, Ruger that sort of rifle . I like the idea of the 7-08 and was thinking of one myself as I posted a thread on it here somewhere . What would the recoil be like in a lightweight 7-08 compared to a 30. 06 that's what I shoot now .Would like to know your thoughts . Sorry don't want to derail the OP's thread

Recoil to me seems like a faster punch than a 300wm. The blast and concussion is however a large step above the 300wm

I have a Sako AV with a Bausch and Lomb 2-7x32 and a bunch of 300gr sierra boattail spitzers loaded to 2300-2400 fps. Should work.
for the last 20 years or so I have mostly used my model 700 Remington topped with a Leupold 4x 12 shooting Hornady 139 gr. handloads @ 3000 '/sec. for everything from moose, deer, black bear .a wolf or two and the odd partridge ....I have about 35 notches on my stock even tho for years we seldom get chosen for an adult moose draw .

Most of my centre fires are moose capable, can't really say I have a favorite. The last few years it's been 308, with the 30-30 as a light carry backup. This year it will be the 338WM, have yet to pick a backup. 303BR in various rifles has been along a few times, as has the 6.5X55, 270win, 30-06, and 45-70.

More power than needed, but with a soft point bullet, it would be very effective.
It is similar in size and power to 308 and 30-06.
I have long believed that far more game is lost, or suffered unnecessarily before death because of bad bullet choices, than have done so due to bad cartridge choices. Ironically, many new hunters spend much time and energy trying to pick what they think is the best cartridge, then go to the hardware store and buy whatever loads are available on the shelf.

Recoil while hunting, one shot means nothing. How much you're walking with Rifle ?
7-08 to 50 BMG all shoot good, shot placement means everything.
Short barrel or long, better test your limits before testing Rifle's.
Anything you can afford even Mossberg drops deer or Moose.
Apparently it has very low recoil according to my hunting buddies, pleasure to shoot and hunt with. It is a popular choice among small statured folks and has great ballistics. Pretty easy to carry around all day compared to some heavy magnum rifles, I curse mine on a regular basis until I make a kill and all is forgotten.
At the moment it is my 7mm rem mag ruger m77. I have a .35 Whelen Remington 700 that may take its place.
My girlfriend has a 7mm-08 and I sometimes borrow it. Great cartridge and I would happily tip moose and elk over with one, this one dotes on 150 grain NBT. As far as recoil and barrel length, kind of personal choices. How light you go will decide if it recoils less or more and I'd prefer a 20 or 22" barrel.
