Well, considering the preponderance (great word, eh?) of 9mm handguns and .223 semi-auto battle weapons, I would have to say no. Actually, I am thinking that whatever weapon someone wants to use is fine, as long as it is centrefire. I would love to see someone out there killin' maggot-traps with a levergun or a SMLE. Remember, the idea is more of a, 'the sh** JUST hit the fan, and you had no prep-time' sort of scenario. In that case, a Winchester trapper is better than your bare fists, right? However, I am planning to maybe allow rimfire in a separate category, mostly for juniors (sorry, P12, no offense) to try and get some of the younger, up-and-coming undead-death-dealers a chance. The idea of multiple shots on the same target is a good one, except that I now am strongly thinking we will be using balloons for targets, and that wouldn't work.

No offense taken, just trying to help out and make this thing interesting. I don't have a center fire semi-auto, so my 10/22 would be the first I would grab with the 590 as backup. I will have a 9mm when CanAm ships it. As far as center fire rifles, I got 2 bolt guns, they are slow to aim, fire and reload.
From what I read about the .22 it may be small, but its nothing to laugh at, it has enough power to go through a scull especially at 15 - 20 m.

If you were able to do the ballons with helium tie them to strings you would have moving zombie targets if there is a breeze.

Yes, I am going to try and make them so they move around in the breeze, should make it more un-lifelike and challenging.

P12, yes you are correct that the .22 LR will penetrate the skull, but we are looking more for real devastation, the kind that makes the undead real-dead. But, again, when the mess shows up on our doorstep, a 10/22 is better than nothing, that's why I will allow it, just in a different section. This is supposed to be about fun, above all else, and practical move-and-shoot scenarios. Hey, if surviving the zombie onslaught isn't about fun, what is it about???

Could make it a Postal type match, once the course of fire is established.

A zombie match is a great idea. Not sure if I could make it to Edmonton but a postal match, if it could be made to work, would be a blast. If this might work and you need help, count me in.

I was thinking of pumpkins and watermelons on wooden stakes myself.

I wish! I thought about that early on, but the cost and supplies would be way too high to make it feasible. The thing is, though, that if someone wanted to do that and charge more, it wouldn't really make a difference, so it would be cool.

The rimfire guys always seem to be pushed out into the cold in these deals. How about a rimfire class?

I like the idea of reactive targets too. Something like soup tins would take a fair licking before being gnarled too much to serve. Swap in the next soup tin and you're good for another 5 or 6 passes, right? A bit of advance notice or some trips around to various eateries that use canned goods and you should be able to secure a good supply of targets. Or are these a bad idea? If so some 1/2 inch x 4 inch rounds of steel may be in order. Or balloons. Make the shooters blow their own up before the run. A pass through gauge would prevent them from cheating and blowing them up too much.... :D And the induced hypoxia should make for some really amusing stage results..... :D

.22 shooters don't have as much recoil to deal with so THEIR cans or balloons should be smaller. Don't hate me, I'm a .22 shooter as well. But we're better than dem danged center fire guys right? :D

Boy, I can hardly wait to join my first shooting club so I can suggest stuff like this. The event sounds really fun and yet quite simple to run it.

I think the soup can idea is neat, but I am definitely wondering about target size. I'm thinking that the cans may be too small to hit, when you consider all shots have to be taken whilst on the move. I appreciate the input, though, as I would really like to have reactive targets as well - nothing like seeing something 'splat' when you shoot it.
On another note, I have a question for those of you that are interested in this: I am looking into having patches made for the winners, and am wondering about the best name for this Zombie Strike Force. My first thought is "Zombie Abatement Force (ZAF)," but I also wondered about using "Canadian Zombie Abatement Regiment (CZAR)." What are your thoughts? I will be posting some artistic ideas in the near future, as I have already sent ideas and artwork off for quotes.

I just had a thought about three balloons separated by a piece of pine/plywood/whatever so that as you shot the first balloon the target stack fell or rotated forward, exposing the second balloon, then the third one in turn.

Let me think about this for a bit...

I've some ideas for the winner's patches, here is the first one, tell me what you think.

I also have this one, which is more 'cartoony' and would probably play better in stitches. Also, there should be the same text around the outside circle as on the one above, just couldn't get it to happen properly.

This is my idea,

The scenario could consist of something like this: You are trapped in a long narrow hallway filled with zombies. There is only one exit which is blocked by zombies that are moving towards you at various speeds. Behind you are hordes upon hordes of the living dead. Your only chance is to shoot your way through to the exit before the zombies at your back catch up with you and feast on your brains. Only headshots will work on this breed of zombie.

Stage setup would not be too hard. Start with 6-8 lines spaced several inches apart on pulleys similar to a clothes line about 7' off the ground. All the pulleys are driven by the same motor with different sized pulleys providing different line speeds. The zombie targets could consist of balloons on a string hanging off the lines with a paper zombie body taped to the bottom of the balloon. Ideally the body would drop with a headshot. Two lines would be marked out on either side of the lines to make up a shooting lane the player could not step out of. At the start of the course of fire, the zombie targets would move towards the shooter at different speeds. A tape or marker should be hanging from the top of one of the pulley lines so that it starts behind the shooter and moves toward the zombie targets, pushing the shooter forward. If the tape (representing the zombie horde behind) or any of the zombie targets touch the player, they are declared eaten and the course is over. To win you would need to stay moving ahead of the horde at your back while shooting down all the targets coming towards you and make it to the finish line. Scoring could be based on time.

Some random zombie sounds should be played to give it atmosphere.

Just sorta thinking out loud. Any thoughts would be welcome. Might try to work on some diagrams to try and make it more clear.

I like the patches, but I was hoping for something custom, something that was just about this particular shoot, you know? Where did you find them?

Bobby I, I'm not sure why you would want it to be all shotguns. I know the shotty would be great for spraying diseased grey matter, but you could certainly carry more ammo in something smaller, say a 9mm or .223 or something. Besides, the best weapon in any SHTF situation is the one in your hand at the time, right?
