2014 BC Precision Rifle Championship June 13-15, 2014

So if u register for the event and you are a local shooter that registers with the club are u able to use the range on none competition days?

i am fairly new to the long range world and would love to practise prior competition day. My current club only offers a 200 meter range!

Are there any local lower mainland/ Vancouver shooters that would be interested in shooting practices with a green horn?

any advise / help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hello SEK-BERLIN.
The Vokes Range is a military range and does not allow public access. You can only use it under the auspices of the BCRA. It must be a BCRA sanctioned event or practice. Please see my post #33 above.

I think it is important to read the course of fire and be familiar with it. It is designed to put pressure on the shooter to make mental errors.

I am not sure which range you have access to. In the past I have seen a few shooters from this event practicing at PCDHFC Range on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam even though it is only 200 m. They have an area on range 7 on the left side where you can lay out a mat and shoot prone (I assume it is still there as I have not been there for a few years). In my experience most people shooting prone there at this time of the year are practicing for this match.
Take targets that mimic the ones for the match. (Unfortunatley PCDHFC Range does not allow human targets:(.)
V Bull Precision Dots of Doom are popular for practice (stage 7), 10% of aggregate hps.
I believe having a feel for what a 3 second or 5 second exposure is, down for 5 to 10 seconds between exposures is good to work on. Practice with a partner doing "timed" exposures. Partner calls which target and counts the seconds of exposure. Target up; one thousand 1, one thousand 2, one thousand 3, target down.
Read up on shooting at moving targets at 300m (Stage 11,) 600m (stage 2), Speed of travel, where to hold cross hairs, using mildots,.....
Cross firing on the wrong target is a popular way to loose points at the match :ang and give your neighbor a better scores:dancingbanana:. It also confuses the score keeper:sok2 Place targets on the sand berms to practice target acquisition.
Reading mirage and reading wind is a little tougher to practice.

Mission Range goes out to 300m.
Some one here may take you up on the offer of joining you on the range.

Crossfire on your target sucks! Ok look, 11 holes when there should be 10....

I never understood why they penalize the shooter by going low-high. They should give the shooter the benefit of the doubt and strike off all the lowest first until the correct amount is reached. Always sucks when you have a nice centered pile of shots and someone has shotgunned a few around the rest of your target and you have to take off yours which are clearly in a nice group in the center.

I think we get the occasional cross fire if I recall correctly. Although it only takes one cross fire to ruin the day. From my understanding forgetting to dial down the magnification can be ovrec f:P:2:

With lots of quality shooters that will put in a nice group, some times it appears obvious which is the cross fire but unfortunately that does not qualify as a means of identifying excess shots. There have also been occasions where the cross fire was not obvious. It can happen to the best of competitors.

"Unless proscribed by the match," In past matches in the course of fire some of the stages had the lowest score value struck until the correct amount was reached. I see that is not the case his time.
It has not happened in my time but I am not looking forward to dealing with 7.03.04.iii) When the number of hits exceeds one half......reshoot the(stage).
Looking from the butts, my guess is the walkers at 600m would be a candidate for cross fires. On that one the target may start at either side of the target bay increasing the difficulty of correct target acquisition. Since the target is a side view the figure does not always face the direction it will move.:kickInTheNuts: These ones in the picture are at 300m.

What happens when you can clearly identify the cross fired shots. Eg., when the shooter is shooting a 6mm and the extra hits are .308.?

NormB

Even if shots are clearly identified they still get stricken off low then high til the correct amount is reached. According to the rules anyways unless the match director steps in.

7.03.04 Excessive Hits:
a. Unless proscribed by the match, when the total number of hits on a competitors target exceeds the number of shots which they have fired and when there is no means of identifying these shots, all the hits shall be signaled in the usual manner. Then the procedure shall be as follows;

If the question was between a 308 and 223 there is an obvious means to identify the excess shots. I have recorded scores in past matches to reflect that, there fore no loss to the victim of the cross fire. Those are easy.
"Firing point butts"
"butts firing point go ahead"
"firing point butts what caliber is target 7 shooting?"
...........
"butts firing point 308"
"firing point butts what caliber is target 8 shooting"
"223"
"firing points butts please advise target 8 they cross fired with their 223 onto target 7"

Ah yes, cross fire...

I remember wayyy back being told by a CF rifle coach that the high/low thing was designed to prevent a 'buddy' from helping you out. Yeah, I know.

That pic of me is artfully placed and the caption works well with the subject but let's please remember that that moment in time had nothing to do with crossfire. ;)

To all you new guys sitting on the fence....I get it. I was there too, most of us were. My first year I just came by the range on match day and checked it out. Talked to some people. Everyone I spoke to was really laid back, informative and welcoming. I wish I'd been entered.

My first year as a competitor was awesome. As a newb you get TONS of help from everyone, although that's not much different as you progress either. People here are just nice. Sure, there's usually some cool prizes...sometimes really really cool...and peer recognition (bragging rights) in this event motivates too but it still manages to remain friendly.

And speaking of prizes, there's usually something nice for everyone, frequently worth more than the entry fee. Some years the last place competitor has taken home prizes worth hundreds of dollars :D

Practice for the match, as you will find, pretty much comes down to shooting at 100m for most and as mentioned, using Ed's Dots is popular. Basically thats shooting at 3/4 inch circles at 100m. 20 dots to a page, one shot per dot. You can do that at almost any range. Is it nice to practice shooting further...absolutely, and if you can get your scope values for 200m that will help predict your sight in for 300-600 but many, many people get their 200-600m settings at the range the day before the match.

Other than that, you can practice the positions required in the course of fire. If there's any sitting or standing, that can be new for some people, as is the use of a sling. Everything else, the shooting off a roof or using your partner as a rifle rest, the moving targets, etc., are all kinda difficult for most people to do outside of the match.

And that's a cool thing! That's one of the reasons you come, because you just can't do this stuff anywhere else. My first experience doing all that was here and since then I've heard almost every new person say the same, usually followed by '...and it was soooo cool.'

If you have a buddy to do this with then awesome but, as others have said, if you show up solo you will get paired up. One of the most successful partnerships in recent years resulted from two guys getting paired up a few years ago.

Go to the website and click on the match reports. They give a pretty good idea of what to expect. Then, since you're there, download the entry and the course of fire. You know you wannna...

Aloha guys ! GG&FB IS HERE!!!!

It's been awhile since I've visited this site....or BC, there's been 2,332,037 new posts on CGN since I last checked in !!!
Good work members .

Sooooo......I'm thinking of traveling the 2,718 miles out to BC to visit family and maybe join in on this event.

Since I haven't sent anything down range since the last time ....2008 I think, I'll probably be dead last....but it's the only chance to see many of you guys again. Im sure Ed will think I'm wasting time and good ammo but I disagree..... :)

Anybody out there want to shoot hot gun with me ? I'll probably bring the team down point wise...... Maybe there is someone new out there that wants to try the competition and needs a partner? I'm most at home behind the m14, rusty on bolt actions and have no time sending out 5.56

I might be able to rally up one of the M14's I gave away, but I sold all my glass a few years ago.....so if someone wants to shoot hot gun with me and take rifle out on Friday and sight in new glass that would work as I won't be able to make the Friday

Well.....aloha and mahalo for now

Practice any one?

BCRA Email Members;
Club 600 is being held at Vokes range on Thursday 24th April. It start at 0900 hrs with set up starting at 0800hrs. I need help to set up. The course of fire will be 3x15 rounds at 600m plus sighters and then debrief at the Jolly Miller.

Rain is forecast sat the moment for Thursday, not showers. If it is rains at any time, we will use the shelter tents on the Firing Point and shoot from under them.
If you are attending, please email me, so I can be assured we have enough shooters to do the duties of running the range as well as shooting it.

Ok Folks,

So I just got the grand total of entrants to our match .................11 yup ...11 a lot of guys running their mouths on this thread
But very few actual entries ,the match is in jeopardy of being cancelled once again!!! If entries do not significantly improve
By May 15 the match will be rescheduled into a BCRA training weekend .I am sure that those attending the western Flass champs would appreciate the opurtunity for range time . 11 entries

What the hell. Cmon folks..... Let's not let this get cancelled. It is a grim reminder that people talk a lot of talk.

I am really looking forward to shooting this, so personally, I would be pretty pissed if it doesn't happen.

Hello Grant,

The plain truth of it is that best intentions don't count for much, and even less when a director is explaining to membership at large at the AGM why he lost/ cost the organization money ,based on "I won't know for two weeks BUT " and apart from the financial
Aspect of the shoot ,if the numbers don't make sense can the scheduled range time be used more effectively by another discipline
Or for practice for the Fclass western shoot or ? Bottom line is always the bottom line ,plain, simple, cold truth

Regards
Ed
